Dear Friends,
With the holiday season upon us I am receiving more calls and emails for Christmas puppies than usual. I wrote this article a few years ago but felt that it is very relevant for today and I am resharing it. There are so many “breeders/greeders” and mills out there today and I feel since the pandemic perhaps even more. Post pandemic we see so many dogs now dumped into shelters because people have gone back to their lives but no longer have time for their pets.
If you read this to the end, you win a free puppy! The naughty one in the photo above! Seriously though, please know that I LOVE ALL DOGS! I would take in any mixed breed rescue without a second thought!
You want a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and would love to have one now! It can be a dog-eat-dog world out there when a new pet owner sets their sites on their first pure bred dog. Where does one even start?
We have all heard by now the stories about dealing with back yard breeders or the person who had a little oops with the dog next door. Those babies are sure cute are they not? Puppies really tug at our heartstrings, and I personally have not been able to say no to a single one of them. When you are searching for an investment like a car, a home, a new entertainment system, many of us perform a great deal of due diligence before we hand over our cash. We want to understand where it was built, how it was built but most importantly what is the warranty on this if something should go wrong. Where do you go for that kind of information when you buy a dog?
The best place to start to look for a dog is a breed specific club. There are many provincial Breed Clubs for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels including the Canadian National club. These breed clubs have over 100 years of combined Cavalier experience. Some much more than that but then again, ladies and gentlemen never divulge their age! You did read that correctly however, over 100 years of experience or more consisting of members with pets, grooming, health testing, showing as well as many other important things that go into creating the best Cavalier they can as breeders. When you combine these club members time and experience in this breed, we have all of those years of experience that we leverage together to support you as a puppy buyer and each other to improve the lines and health of our breed. Each and every club member in my club is a student of the breed, our learning never stops. I think that can be said of any breed club. The research that is performed on reproduction, health, the improvement of health as well as blood lines is amazing. Many of our members could hold seminars in their own right teaching others about one of these topics.
We often think of large companies having such a vast history which contributes to improving its brand and product, but your Registered Breed club is exactly the same. I hope this has helped you understand the importance of finding a club to approach. They will share with you their members who are breeding in accordance with all of the standards which include valuable heart testing prior to breeding, eye testing as well as many other tests. Our breed club follows a code of ethics which requires us to do this for each and every puppy we produce.
A preservation breeder will show you their health testing they performed without question that was completed by Board Certified specialists (Cardiologists, Ophthalmologists, MRI's) as well as share copies of that testing with you when you purchase your pup. A preservation breeder will stand behind you when you have questions. This was once their baby that they thoughtfully produced, whelped, stayed up all night with along with as well as mom and siblings to make sure you have the best puppy, the healthiest puppy they could bring into this world.
Every pup a breeder of this merit produces is their legacy. It is a piece of their heart and each pup holds a memory of their birth as well as the sleepless nights caring for them. If you can no longer keep your dog due to circumstance that breeder will take your dog back no questions asked. That breeder will find a home for your dog or in many cases I know, simply accept it back into their little flock.
The experience, knowledge and love of the breed is why you want to choose a breeder who is registered with the Canadian or American Kennel Club as well as being involved with showing and a member of their local breed club.
This absolutely matters!
