Atlanta's animal shelters are in crisis. (As are shelters nationwide.) Here are 4 ways to help if you can't foster or adopt. Please spread the word!
Polka is a gorgeous fella in foster for Fulton County Animal Services in Atlanta. He's ready to ride to his forever home! bit.ly/adoptpolka
Meet Shirakuro! This fab 3 yo boy came in to @dekalbanimals as a victim in a cruelty and neglect case July, but you'd never know it from his sweet demeanor. @hadster347 took him out Dog for the Day and you could not ask for an easier dog. Shirakuro is dog friendly (he goes to playgroup regularly and has a roommie), he met her cat and Biggles gave him a 5/5 whiskers for cat friendliness, they met a TON of kids and he was a doll with them. Plus he is non-leash reactive, great in the car, takes treats gently and knows sit. Please adopt or foster this great dog! Metro ATL
It is SO AMAZING the way people step up to save dogs scheduled for euthanasia. Not just here in Atlanta, but shelters all over the country are drowning in homeless dogs. Besides thank you to all who are stepping up, I want to say two things:
1- There is no shame in fostering or adopting a dog who is NOT urgent or euth-listed. In this climate, really every dog is urgent. Pick the dog for whom you are both the best fit--the dog for you and your home for the dog. Do NOT feel guilty for adopting an "easy" or not-at-risk dog. (Some urgent dogs ARE easy.)
2- Shelter dogs NEED decompression time! Especially dogs who are long-timers or who experience kennel stress. Do NOT rush intros with resident dogs. For the love of all you hold holy, do NOT bring a new dog straight into your home if you have another dog. Bring your dog outside and you all go for a pack walk in neutral ground first. And still you should keep them separated for several days. You've stepped up to save a dog, now set him/her up for success by giving them a chance to decompress.
Here's a reminder about the Rule of Three and what that means for both of you.
Polka needs a foster or adopter
UPDATE 11/15: I am heartbroken to report that this angel gained her wings. She was just too sick to recover. Please hold her foster parents in your thoughts. It is devastating to lose a medical foster, especially just a baby. 😭
UPDATE 11/2 at 2pm: Foster found! Still available for adoption.
Anyone have room at the inn for this angel? This is Polka, just 3 months old and clearly terrified at the shelter. A foster was supposed to come get her but never showed. The shelter is a dangerous place for a puppy without an established immune system. Clearly she's got some recuperating to do. Can you give her a place to crash for a few weeks? If so, please email [email protected] and put "Polka foster" in the subject line. Please share in case someone you know can give her a foster or forever home (she needs more vaccines and to be spayed, so she's eligible for foster-to-adopt). She's at Dekalb County Animal Services in metro Atlanta.
