This is just my opinion, but I think everyone should look for a dog based on temperament first and foremost, how the doggie candidate will interact and fit with your family, and lastly based on appearance.

Research! How does the breed normally act with children (if you have them)? How would they fare in your climate? How much maintenance is required (remember it's not just the purchase price but their care is a long-term commitment)? Do they need a large yard or is an apartment suitable? So many questions!

There are wonderful, sweet animals that you can find at your local shelter. If you are able to do so and are educated regarding the possible needs your animal may have, then we encourage you to do so! We also think there is nothing wrong with seeking a specific breed from a reputable breeder because you know that dog will fit your family.

Unfortunately, a lot of people prioritize eye color and coat color when those are only a small component of the animal overall. There are so many bright, sweet, and wonderful pups that get overlooked for something as simple as having brown eyes. There is nothing wrong with wanting a certain "look" but it's unfortunate that so many people possibly dismiss the perfect dog because of one small detail. If you're contacting an online breeder, ask them how the pup's temperament is and pay attention to what they say.
