This last week, I’ve been going through my silkie grow outs and the bachelor pad that’ve been growing up since September, October, and November hatches, trying to determine who makes the cut.

For me, this is the hardest part of this breeding journey.

I had two great breeders, to whom I am so thankful for. Killebrew Family Farm and Wunderlin Farm
They helped me look at the bird and see the faults that exist. You know … those birds that capture your eye and heart that you’re willing to look over those faults.

I am beyond grateful for the time they spent with me.

It’s all in bettering the quality chicks 🐣 that I will hatch next year.

This is the largest cull I’ve done to date. I’m fortunate enough to have found another local farm that takes these boys that have faults.

I know that they’re going to a good home with someone to care for them. These folks also give back to the community and I am here for it!

Great information! Chick Care Content

Because chick days are coming up:

🎉All babies require a brooder, attention, clean bedding, monitoring for signs of issues such as splay leg and good clean food/water. WARNING: ducks CANNOT have medicated feed

🏘Babies will need a brooder with heat. The kind of brooder system you will choose will be based on how many babies you are purchasing and the cost you want to invest for your initial set up (once again if this is your first time I suggest you start small).

📖Read up on the breed and see what temperature settings your breed of poultry need at their current age. You will need a brooder set up with a thermometer that your baby poultry cannot peck and break but is accurate. Your heat source will need to be either raised a little each week to decrease their temperature or turned down a bit. This is not a quick process and it gets them ready to be outside. I prefer brooder plates from tractor supply. They have a brooder setting and a heater setting. I use that at one end of the area and the other end I use a light bulb over the feed and water. The light bulb will entice the chicks to come eat and not stay in the dark under the heater all the time.

👸Have your Brooder set up and ready before you purchase or pick up your new babies.

💫Make sure you have Probiotic and electrolyte starter packs to add to their water. They can both be used at the same time and this will help them if they have had any stress during their move or being shipped. This is like a dose of really good vitamins to boost them up after being so stressed out.


🙃NEVER use Cedar shavings for your chicks bedding as this can cause respiratory problems. I use large flake pine shavings because there is less chance of them pecking at it and choking on it. Once again, this is all personal choice.

My first Shipping Update

USPS for the win 🏆 so far!

My first shipped babies landed in Houston overnight. I dropped them off at 4pm yesterday. Now they’re only 40 minutes away from their new home. 🚢💕🫶🏻

I have this piece of mind because I followed a top breeders techniques. I included a Tile tracker in the box. Once the package gets picked up, all my client needs to do is put the self addressed prepaid bubble envelope back in the mail.
