So much great information from Holly 🫶🏻

A couple thoughts for the day. Before chick season starts..let's talk abt quarantine and mixing newly purchased birds together. Older or younger..doesn't matter. Rules are the same. Do not mix birds together from different breeders, farms or hatcheries. It doesn't matter if the breeders know eachother and share birds. If you want your flock to stay healthy then just say no. Quarantine separately for 30 days minimum. Each group must not be close to eachother for 30 days. This doesn't mean that the breeders have nasty birds or that they have diseases but every farm has its own funk or bacteria. Some mesh and some don't.

If your newly purchased poultry are stressed, they can do what is known as “shedding”.  This means that “things” such as Coccidiosis or Salmonella etc., which is found in all birds, becomes “active” and “contagious”.

Now I know you are going to say “well if it is common, so what” right?  Wrong..when it becomes active it can make the birds weak and it can spread to the rest of your healthy flock or other healthy chicks.

This does not mean in any way that the birds you purchased from someone were sick when you purchased them; this is a very regular occurrence that can happen no matter how healthy the bird is.  You can go to a farm that has NEVER had a problem at all with any of it and the birds get stressed in transport and BAM, it is active.

Coccidiosis is natural and found in most ground/property, the issue is there are many strains of it that the birds can have.  While birds on a farm can be immune to the ones on the ground they currently walk on, does not mean they will be immune to the strain on your farm and in a weakened state because of stress, it can make them sick.  30 Days is a very descent amount of time to allow the birds to get adjusted to their new ground, feed, and owners and get over the stress of being moved from one farm to another.

Too many times I see on here how entire flocks have been “culled” because of the birds going under stress, shedding and then passing on things to the rest of the flock.  Please be patient and allow all new purchases to get accustomed to their new home.

It’s tough when you lose a bird. I lost one of my gray girls today, taking my trio down to a pair.

Sometimes when cold winter comes, birds go.

Bye bye little honey girl 🥹

And we have metal on the roof 🥹 So grateful for Josh and Jack!

Once we can have a break in the rain 🌧️, hopefully 🤞🏼 next weekend, we will have a couple upper areas ready to move some silkies into their new home.

I’m looking forward to easier winter maintenance and care.

Excited to use our new Quarantine Zone for today’s new arrivals. Super stoked for my boys from Rustic Roost Silkies and lavender from Spoiled Silkies by Erin.

Thank you ladies for helping me bring new blood to the hood.

Sometimes it takes years to make colored pens and I am here for that journey.
