Stocking the medicine cabinet never felt so good! Got our first batch of elderberries dehydrated, vacuum sealed and ready for the coming winter months.
Despite the flood and now a drought, our garden is blessed and I’m beginning to harvest some goodies! Onions, potatoes, elderberries, cucumbers and zucchini! Yum!
Happy Mother’s Day ❤️
New Video up on the channel! I'm Back!
It's been quite some time since I posted a video, but I'm back and I'm hoping to keep the videos coming!Let me know in the comments what questions you have, ...
Our turkeys started laying eggs again last week and I’ve been diligently collecting them to hopefully hatch a handful! So, I’m firing up the incubator and letting it warm up today so I can get these beauties started tomorrow! So excited to be hatching eggs again ❤️
I’m starting a new, new years tradition and “hopefully” making a years worth of vanilla extract. (Idk if two bottles is enough 😆)
Did you know that all it takes is vodka or rum, a handful of vanilla beans and about 6 months time to make your own?
It’s so simple to make and significantly cheaper than store bought, especially if you do a lot of baking or cooking from scratch like I do.
So I bought two bottles of Tito’s, I’m gonna drop about 10 vanilla beans in each bottle and by July, I should have some delightful vanilla extract to enjoy the rest of the year!
I’m working on a little sewing project and I thought, maybe y’all would like a YouTube video? Let me know and I’ll make it happen!
Merry Christmas everyone! From our family to yours! ❤️
I’m going LIVE over on YouTube in just 30 minutes!!! (7pm est august 4th)We are talking about gardening! Hope to see you there!

My very first sunflower bloomed in the cut flower garden today and it’s a looker! I love that inner ring of ruby red, really draws your eyes to the center of the flower and makes that yellow pop!

The elderberries here are in full bloom and I can’t get enough! They’re so delicate and beautiful and smell absolutely divine!
Last year I had two plants bloom and develop berries, this year all six are blossomed! I’m expecting a gorgeous harvest of elderberries this year!
The past couple days have been a bit cooler and have allowed me to do some work in the greenhouse. I’ve been slowly getting some smaller, unfinished projects accomplished that really just clean up the spaces I have.
Getting this back wall on the greenhouse insulated and walled in will hopefully mean a slightly warmer greenhouse for next spring seed starting and will also allow me to get my tools hung and organized vs just laying in a corner somewhere. I like getting things finished and organized.
Side note, how cool is this photo??? No filter, I promise, just a moody evening with a storm rolling in and BAM! I catch this cool photo of the insulation in my greenhouse 🤣 Gotta appreciate the little things.
***WARNING*** Graphic images ahead. Swipe with caution.
These are coturnix quail and their injuries are the results of having an awful male to female ratio. One of these birds is a male, the other a female. It’s not gender specific.
This is why it is so important to know the gender of your birds and keep the ratios right. 1 male per every 5-6 females.
Unfortunately, these quail are from those that I hatched about 10 weeks ago. The ratio of males to females is 20 to 3! I have them separated as best I can, but even still it’s not enough.
The males are fighting each other, the females are getting over mated and this is the result. I’m currently waiting on a good pair of shears so I can remedy this problem, but until then, I’m playing nursemaid and vet to these poor things.
I have them separated, wounds have been cleaned and treated and they’re now resting quietly. I’ve been able to heal up wounds like these with no issue before, so im hopeful these will heal up just as well. It just takes time and attention and is completely avoidable.
So please, if you raise quail, chickens, turkeys, ducks, etc. please do your research and make sure that your male to female ratio is correct. This will ensure the safety, health and happiness of your animals and prevent injuries like these from ever happening.
Ok friends. I need help. I’m considering teaching a beginner gardening class here on our homestead.
If I offered this, what is something you would like to learn? Something you’d like to do? Something you’d like to experience? A question you would like answered? Etc etc…
If you could leave your suggestion, question or desired experience, whether you’re interested in the class or not, in the comments it would be super helpful! I’d like to have a rough idea of what to go over 😊
Thank you for your help!!!

Does anybody else save glass bottles and jars? I recently started getting our maple syrup from Rural King and it comes in this beautiful glass jug! I thought, what a perfect jug for homemade apple cider vinegar, vanilla, more maple syrup (I’d like to tap some trees next year) or whatever my homestead kitchen can cook up!
I did a live interview over on YouTube a few weeks ago and it got me thinking, would y’all like it if I did an Ask Me Anything live a few times a month? It would give y’all an opportunity to talk to me in real time, ask questions and just hang out for a bit? Would love your input on this!

So I did a thing.
The past couple years I started my seeds in the plastic seed trays. This worked brilliantly and my seedlings did fantastic each year. However, I purchased the cheap ones because it was what I could afford; but let’s face it, they just don’t last.
They’re made of cheap flimsy plastic that might last a season or two if you’re lucky. Which means every year you need to reinvest in seed pots or trays just to get your garden going. This can become very expensive and is unsustainable because new plastic needs to be made to make those trays.
I love the seed trays and i needed about 100-200 more this year (because mine didn’t last!) but I can’t afford the really good ones (you know the heavy duty last a lifetime ones), but I could absolutely do soil blockers.
Soil blockers are these little contraptions that make blocks of soil to start your seeds in. When you mix the soil/compost mixture just right, put it in these soil blockers and press them into a block, it holds together beautifully and provides a cozy place for your seeds to grow; without all the plastic.
I needed to invest one way or another to get my seeds going; seed trays or soil blockers. Both were going to be costly, but one would need replaced next year and the other has the potential to last a lifetime. I chose to invest in the soil blockers.
Here’s to a new adventure in my gardening journey!
Have you used soil blockers before? What was your experience? Let me know!
Just incase you missed yesterdays video! It’s official, I have a functional greenhouse ready for spring!

These babies are getting big!! Coturnix quail grow so quickly! Did you know they start laying eggs at just 6 weeks old? I know right, that’s not a typo! 6 weeks and you’ve got eggs in the basket. They’re amazing little birds and a great addition to any backyard homestead. #coturnixquail #quail #chicks #growingupfast #gettingbig #eggsinjust6weeks #homestead #farmgirlinprogress
It’s elderberry season! I just finished dehydrating and storing this first round of elderberries, just in time for the next to be harvesting! (Video coming soon!) I’m loving this bag method for harvesting. It’s super simple, no need for buckets or bowls or wagons. Just cut at the top of the bag and let it drop, move to the next, collect when finish. No worry about loss of berries, because the bag catches them! I put the bags on when the berries were still green and just starting to turn, this allowed them to rippen on the plant and protected the delicate berries from weather and predators alike. Will definitely do this method again in the future! 100% recommend! #elderberryharvest #elderberries #harvesttime #foodismedicine #medicinalplants #homegrown #homestead #farmgirlinprogress

Out of the four turkey poults we hatched, these are the two that remain. One passed of unknown reasons, it was healthy one day and gone the next. The other was struggling with a slipped tendon and eventually stopped eating, despite my best efforts to fix the tendon and keep it eating, it gave up the fight 😢 Sometimes, even when we give it our best, it’s just not meant to be. But on the flip side, the little gray poult in this video, was on my least likely to survive list. It got shrink wrapped in its egg, so I had to help it hatch. Both of its legs had slipped tendons that needed tended to (put back in place, wrapped and splinted until they stayed). I had to hand feed it mash and vitamin water via a syringe every couple of hours because it couldn’t use its legs. Then once the tendons had righted themselves, it needed hobbled (the legs tied together similar to handcuffs) to keep them in the right position for walking! I was concerned it lost function of one of its feet because it wasn’t opening properly, but I prayed that God would show me his mercy and power and heal this baby, and I hoped and believed for the best! This chick had everything up against it, but it had fight and so long as it was willing, so was I. I prayed over this baby, like I have over every sick baby I’ve tended and believed God would hear my prayers and answer. I kept working and believing and sure enough He answered. He healed this little chick, gave it strong legs and feet, and a healthy appetite for it gained weight quickly once it started getting around on its own. Sometimes things don’t work out how we want them to, despite our best efforts, but sometimes our prayers get answered and God works everything out for our good and his glory! This little gray baby, is the baby I prayed for when I started this hatch, a gray hen to pair with our grey Tom. I don’t know what it’s gender is yet, but I’m hopeful for a hen ❤️ To God be all the glory and praise! #turkeypou
It’s always a day to celebrate when the chicks become hens! We got our very first quail egg from our new batch of coturnix quail we hatched! What an exciting day! #coturnixquail #firstegg #fairyegg #sotiny #quailcovey #backyardquail #meatandeggs #homestead #farmgirlinprogress

I’ve been working on establishing some no dig beds for growing cut flowers this year. It’s my hope to provide beautiful, locally grown bouquets to my community while also supplementing our income. I would love for everything I do here to pay for itself plus a little extra. So, I’ve been diligently working at putting some income producing systems in place around here. So far I sell eggs and rabbits (for show and meat). I’m adding cut flowers, quail eggs (hatching and heating) possibly quail, chicken and Turkey hatchlings and extra produce to that this year. It’s not perfect, but it’s a start in, hopefully, the right direction. Do you sell something your homestead produces? #nodiggarden #cutflowers #homestead #supplementalincome #farmgirlinprogress
