Tomatoes are taking off! I put them on trellis string that will keep them off the ground and easier to prune and harvest from. Even found some pretty babies. I can taste the Sungolds already!

What’s your favorite tomato?

This is a day that brings a variety of emotions for me. As a daughter, it is sad. As a mother it is joyful (and exhausted!). As a human it is conflicted. Whatever this day means to you, may it be the day you want it to be.

Farm work is dirty work and the results of some of that work doesn’t show until plants are growing and producing. It is the most important work though, setting the foundation for the seedlings in the greenhouse.

The last week has been spent prepping the high tunnel for the coming season. This special structure requires special care and this year the beds needed to be reshaped.

After a fair amount of raking, spreading of amendments, shaping, harrowing and covering the soil back up, we have watered in the additions and now we let nature take its course.

The tomatoes will be here before we know it!

Getting six inches of snow before Halloween panicked this farmer a bit! Garlic and shallots for next season get planted in the fall and I was not looking forward to doing that in the snow.

I enlisted the help of some fantastic farm friends in addition to a snow shovel and landscape blower to get it done last weekend. I couldn’t be more relieved! Of course it warmed right up in the days after we were done.

When the dump has free wood chips, this farmer stocks up!

One does come across some interesting stuff. This year, the oddest find was a fork and the log in the second photo. How did that get through the chipper?!

Why did the turtle cross the road?

This little guy was making it’s way across the road when I arrived home today. I eased its journey and put it in the ditch so it could find a safe place sooner.

I haven’t seen one so large in our area before so it was a fun find. As soon as I set it in the grass, all of the moving and seeing parts popped back out and off it took.

A little bit of rain yesterday and a whole lot of wind. It is so wet, I haven’t ventured into the beds to see how everything fared.

Thankfully we didn’t see any of the possibly inch and a half hail! Did you get hail where you are?

I’m trying arbol chili peppers for the first time this year. They are generally sold dried and pack some really nice heat.

The plants are heavily set with fruit. I hope there is time for them to all turn red! I’ll string them up and let them dry so I can make some killer salsa this winter.

What is your favorite spicy pepper?

Did you know it is easy to save bean and pea seed from your own harvest each year? Just leave overripe pods on the plant to dry completely, harvest and shell. Done!

This is the Homesteader shelling pea from Prairie Road Organic Seed. Very prolific and super delicious!!

I’m glad I harvested onions before the rain. After a bit of curing and cleaning, they will hold in storage for several months. We have eaten these yellow onions all the way into May of the following year!

The yellow onions are Dakota Tears from Prairie Road Organic Seed and the red are Red Wing from Johnny's Selected Seeds.
