Horse nettle is one of our ever invasive w**ds. It grows everywhere and anywhere. When you step on it, it hurts. It takes over in one season. And the roots are hard to pull out.

We’ve tried w**d eating it, but it has super long roots that spread. We’ve tried flame w**ding it but again those deep roots keep it alive. So all we have found is hand pulling to really help. If you can, hold back the tops with one gloves hand and grab it by the very base with the other gloves hand. That’s where it has the least thorns. Try to pull up the roots as much as you can.

Horse nettle is in the nightshade family, has thorns, and produces small fruit that look like tomatoes, but don’t eat them, they are literal poison. It really is the bane of our farm, so when I saw they were fruiting, I decided no more waiting, it was time to pull those suckers before it got back out of control.

Don’t compost these w**ds either. They love mulch and compost piles and will take them over quickly. Let us know if you have any better tricks of naturally ridding your garden of this sticky w**d!

Herbal and hibiscus teas are a great way to cool your body while getting lots of goodness! This herbal hibiscus tea helps cool you from the inside, is full of electrolytes to help with hydration, tastes great, and will help you take a nap.

To make this tea, I use a a small handful of fresh tulsi and fresh lemon balm, washed. You can use stems and flowers, no need to remove them or dry first for this tea. Then I use 8Tbsp and of dried hibiscus tea and 4tsp of dried lavender flowers.

We have a cold brew coffee strainer that fits inside a 1/2 gallon jar, but if you don’t, you can add it directly to a half gallon pitcher. Cover with 1/2 gallon of filtered water and screw on the lid. Set outside in the sun for 1 to 2 hours. Then bring it inside and strain. You want to let this cool to room temperature or colder in the fridge. Then add ice and enjoy. You can sweeten with sugar or honey if preferred as well.

Now this tea makes me sleepy 100% of the time and even makes my body feel cold, but I wake up from my mid day nap completely refreshed and ready to get back out in the evening heat.

We have our fresh lemon balm and tulsi herbs at Sinclair Market and the Winnsboro Farmers' Market. I buy my hibiscus and lavender from Elm Street Apothecary because I know she always has fresh, high quality, and organic dried herbs.

We found a little friend while checking on our fields. Little gardener snake who loves to eat grasshoppers and other unfriendly bugs. We are happy to have him around, but you better believe I stayed far enough away. Then we picked a few cratefuls of carrots to bring to market tomorrow. Come see us at the Winnsboro Farmers' Market from 8am til noon! Come early for the best selection.

🌶️ 🔥 Hot off the press 🔥 🌶️

We are stringing some cayenne peppers! Cayenne peppers are a great herb and seasoning, and are easy to preserve. Hang these in your kitchen for some color and warmth. Once dry, you crush for crushed red pepper flakes or add whole to chilis and stews for deep flavor and heat. Functional beauty.

Ever since we moved to the farm, I have been eager to learn all I can about herbs. I’ve learned how to use dried herbs for making all kinds of teas, salves, tinctures, and more. My friend, Kelley, at Elm Street Apothecary has taught me so much. Well this season I have been growing a decent sized herb garden and have decided to share my over abundance.

This weekend at the Winnsboro Farmers' Market I’ll be bringing an assortment of naturally grown herbs along with our usual offerings. Here’s what we plan to bring this weekend.

Tulsi
Lemongrass
African Blue Basil
Our regular Basil
Lemon Balm
Cayennes
Poblanos
Jalapeños
Bell peppers
Watermelons
Summer Greens
Arugula
Eggplant
Pickler Cucumbers
Slicer Cucumbers

Getting too many peppers is never an issue for us. We use chopped peppers in most dishes at home. So when we have an excess we use our chopper and dice up as many peppers as we can. We lay them out flat on parchment lined cookie sheet and freeze. Once frozen we transfer to a freezer ziplock and store. Then to use we just scoop out a cup or how ever much we need and throw them right into the pan.

This works with jalapeños and poblanos as well.

🫑 🍉 👩🏻‍🌾 Farm Fresh Highlights 👨🏻‍🌾 🌶️ 🌻

This week was full of farm work. The weather was fantastic and there was lots that needed done.

We harvested our first watermelons. We picked cratefuls of pickling cucumbers. We have loads of poblano, cayenne, and jalapeño peppers coming ready. Our basil is going crazy! We seeded and transplanted lots of fall crops. W**d eating and mowing was done as well! Then we got some canning in for good measure. The Winnsboro Farmers Market was a great day and we left with lots of local goodies too.

Want to snag some of our delicious veggies?

Order ahead at: https://m.facebook.com/groups/lindalefarmtotable/?ref=share&mibextid=S66gvF for Tuesday pickup between 5-6pm. While you’re there you can find other amazing farm goods like eggs, peaches, pasture raised meats, chicken, herbal products, delicious handmade pies, local honey, and more!!

Chris and I (Andie) say over and over that we consider our produce to be naturally grown. What this means to us is that we never use chemicals on our produce. We never kill off grass or w**ds using glyphosate or other herbicides. We never spray synthetic pesticides either. On very rare occasions we will use spinosad (a bug eating bacteria) for really bad infestation of potato beetles or worms. The fertilizers and amendments we use are natural. This includes animal manures, compost, and rock based amendments.

When we decided to become farmers, our goal was to feed our family the cleanest veggies we could. Then grow enough to share with our friends and community. Through farming, we have become acquainted to nature and all it has to offer. We love seeing bees hunt for nectar, frogs looking for bugs, and wild flowers providing for butterflies. So next time you see some bug bites in your greens or a caterpillar in your salad, just remember that we grow produce that nature loves too.

Arugula can be defined as bitter and peppery (of the black pepper sort). The variety most often purchased at the store usually has a very mild flavor, however our arugula is a wild, heirloom variety that has a strong flavor profile.

This bitter leafy green is fantastic for your digestive system and is high in fiber, iron, vitamin A, C, & K as well as calcium.

Arugula is often added to salads, used on sandwiches, and can be cooked into dishes similar to spinach. It will cook down quickly, so you want to wilt more than a full sauté.

I have shared multiple recipes for arugula in our Basket Friends group!
