Ragdolls are described by
1. Their white pattern/markings (see below)
2. Their color - seal and its dilute blue, red (orange) and its dilute cream, chocolate and it’s dilute lilac
3. If their colored areas and points are expressed in stripes, they are called “lynx”
4. By the amount of Burmese heritage- if they carry two genes for Siamese color points are considered Traditional Ragdolls and if they carry one Burmese cb genes for their color points are called Mink Ragdolls (also known as Cherubim; a subcategory in TICA). If they carry two copies of the Burmese gene they are Sepia Minks.
4. In the future they are likely being further divided into pointed and solids subcategories. Cinnamon color and its dilute called fawn are also being introduced.

Aamari’s kids update- they went for their 12 week vaccines today - their second FVRCP (cat flu combo) and initial leukemia. They were wormed for the third time.
All did well. A few were a bit spicier than the others, but the veterinary staff went out of their way to make it a positive experience.
All are doing well. None are very fat despite us free feeding them but the vet said they are growing so fast they are a good size and nothing to worry about. They are teething and losing baby teeth here and there; which is normal.

They have played their hearts out, and worn daddy Tao out to the point he is now trying to get a few winks on the highest cat shelf.

For their last month here the focus will be on socialization. on “how to be a proper cat”. A few hours here and there with Momma, but mostly they will spend it with daddy Tao. He’s stricter than Momma. They will be cycled back upstairs for a few days with various Auntys.. Auntys are stricter about the “no ambush” rule.

They will also take turns as to who sleeps with me and the dogs at night, and who spends the day pestering Uncle Talisman. We have noted a return of Talisman’s silly hour 3 a.m. zoomies. They obviously are inspiring him lol.

It is quite common in cats and dogs, and responsible for the old vet saying “white feet don’t treat”. Research however indicates not all pets with white feet have it and pets without white feet can have it. It’s best to consult your vet about any medicine you are giving your pets.

This is your regular reminder that by-products are not bad!

‘By-products’ or ‘Meat and Animal Derivatives’’ are often listed on the ingredients panel of pet food and you might hear they are something to avoid, but they are not!

By-products are simply the parts of the animal that, although passed fit for human consumption, we don’t like to eat. So rather than them going to waste, they are given to pets instead.

They include organs like livers and kidneys, intestines, (cleaned of all food), lungs, bones and blood. All of which are extremely nutrient dense and packed with protein.

It is also important to realise that they do not include things like horns, hoofs, teeth or feathers*. There are no ‘toe nails’ in your dog’s dinner! Nor are they ‘4D meat’ (dead, dying. diseased or disabled) or roadkill. None of these things would be fit for humans to eat and therefore they are not for our pets either.

By-products are also economical and sustainable. They have a lower price tag than premium muscle meat, which means pet food companies are able to create nutritious diets for our animals within a sensible budget, and it means all of the animal is being put to good use, rather than being wasted. They are good for the environment and our wallets!

Sometimes people are concerned by how vague the terms can seem and prefer named meat sources for their pets. This is absolutely fine and lots of diets cater for that but unless your pet has a diagnosed protein source intolerance, you don’t need to be overly worried. And remember, although it is possible for the base ingredients to change if they are not specifically listed, the nutrition in the food will not.

* Feathers are included in one therapeutic allergy diet and work very well for sensitive pets. The company had to go through significant regulatory hoops to add it in, because of these rules.
