Our Story
K9 GRILLZ is dedicated to providing your special dog or cat with the safest, most compassionate, and professional dental care possible. K9 GRILLZ is the ONLY veterinarian owned and operated Anesthesia Free Dental Service in Southern California. The laws written by the California State Veterinary Medical Board have recently and rightly changed to mandate that all Non-anesthetic Dentals (N**s) be performed under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. Understanding the importance of the service and the absolute lack of a veterinary run dental service, Dr. Christopher Thomas set off to open a cutting edge anesthesia free pet dental service. Opened in 2013 K9 GRILLZ puts your pets health, safety, and comfort at the forefront of our philosophy. With a team of amazing hygienists with a combined experience of over 25 years, our knowledge base and our dedication is second to none. Our goal is to keep your pets in good health, and that starts with a happy, healthy mouth.

FOR VETERINARY/DAYCARE/BOARDING/TRAINING FACILITY OWNERS:
Recently, the California Veterinary Medical Board mandated that any and all Non-anesthetic Dental (NAD) cleaning be done strictly under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian following a complete physical examination (visit this page to see the code - http://www.vmb.ca.gov/laws_regs/dental.shtml). Therefore, if any individual or company is performing or hosting any sort of anesthesia free dental cleaning without veterinary supervision, they are in direct violation of the law and are subject to severe financial and/or operational penalty. K9 Grillz is here to fill that void and provide you, your clients, and your clients’ beloved pets with an economical, low-risk alternative to higher risk and considerably higher cost anesthetic dentistry.
Our service is professional, thorough, performed by highly experienced veterinary hygienists and incorporates a multistep cleaning process. Briefly put, the process includes periodontal disease identification and staging, hand instrument examination, ultrasonic cleaning (above and below the gum line and on all exposed surfaces of all teeth), and mechanical polishing. Any abnormalities found are immediately reported to the attending veterinarian. In the event the veterinarian finds any reason that may warrant in-hospital medical attention, the cleaning is halted and the client is then contacted by the veterinarian to discuss options. In either case, our hygienists meticulously chart each cleaning on a standard dental chart. A copy of this chart is sent home with the client after every cleaning and can then be forwarded on to their regular veterinarian for input in the animal’s medical record or used as a guide for an anesthetic dental.
Beyond our professional dental cleaning, our service is unique to daycare/boarding facilities in that every animal receives a complete physical exam by a licensed veterinarian. During that exam not only can periodontal disease be identified, but also cardiac disease, lymphatic disease, skin disease, orthopedic disease, etc. – all of which can be limiting factors to an animal’s candidacy for a NAD. In addition, having a doctor on hand allows for the immediate dispensing of antibiotics. Prophylactic antibiotics are sometimes indicated for animals that have moderate to severe periodontal disease with gingivitis or most animals with a heart murmur.
What we strive to offer at K9 Grillz is the best legal care available in Anesthesia Free Dental prophylaxis. As you know, people want the best for their animals and that is why they entrust their veteirnary/boarding/grooming needs to you. Bringing our company into your facility for monthly or bi-monthly dental days will only enhance your image as an excellent service provider.
***On a side note, down the line we are also considering offering vaccination clinic days in case that would be of benefit to your business.
I would love to have the opportunity to sit down with you to explain the process more completely and answer any of your questions. Please feel free to call or email me to set up a time for discussion.
I very much look forward to hearing from you.
Dr. Christopher Thomas, DVM
