So sad 😞

Remembering another brave animal warrior who stayed behind for our four-legged friends and lost her life. The NSPCA - National Council of SPCAs reports she, along with 2 others, were gunned down in Ukraine as they left an animal shelter where they had delivered dog food. A shelter that reportedly had no food for nearly 3 days. NSPCA reports Anastasiia was just 26 years old. We wish Anastasiia and her 2 friends peace in heaven surrounded by countless loving, beautiful, and amazing animals friends.

PET PRODUCT ALERT! New products added to the list of concern!

A chemical, Titanium Dioxide, used in top-selling pet foods, treats, and supplements should no longer be considered safe for consumption due to concerns over its ability to damage DNA, according to a new animal-model study.

A scientific panel created by the European Food Safety Authority determined, “Taking into account all available scientific studies and data, the Panel concluded that titanium dioxide can no longer be considered safe as a food additive. A critical element in reaching this conclusion is that we could not exclude genotoxicity concerns after consumption of titanium dioxide particles. After oral ingestion, the absorption of titanium dioxide particles is low, however they can accumulate in the body”. The panel concluded that titanium dioxide has the potential to damage DNA and cause chromosomal damage. The Environmental Working Group called on the US Food and Drug Administration to quickly consider whether to ban titanium dioxide from use in food.

A chemical that may damage our pet's DNA should not be fed to pets. Brands that use this chemical don’t put it in all SKU’s, so check your labels to make sure it’s not in anything you feed your pets.

Titanium dioxide is #9 on The Forever Dog’s Dirty Dozen list of additives you need to avoid in your pet food. www.ForeverDog.com/about

Great information!! Scan the entire body!!

Great information!! Scan the entire body!!

This is an X-ray of a dog’s bent front leg. See that tiny white spec? That’s a microchip! It has migrated down the leg....far from where it was inserted, between the dog’s shoulders. This is actually quite common.....

When lost pets are scanned, the entire body SHOULD be scanned to catch any that have migrated. But, as an owner, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AT THEIR YEARLY VET EXAM, to ask for a quick scan to make sure that: (1) the chip is still working, (2) the location of the chip is good, and (3) that the chip info is correct.

Remember microchips save lives and reunite families with their pet.... just have it checked regularly!

The Museum of the Dog has a new exhibit honoring Search and Rescue Dogs: 9/11 Remembered: Search and Rescue Dogs. The exhibit runs through January 2, 2022. THE NEW BARKER will share a link below for a virtual tour, which is free to access and view.

Before September 11, 2001, the general public did not have a clear idea of what search and rescue (SAR) dogs did. That would all change when over 300 SAR teams would be called in to help the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center and the Twin Towers. These dogs would take center stage and show their value during a time of such tragedy. 9/11 Remembered: Search and Rescue Dogs examines the history of search and rescue dogs and highlights the SAR dogs of 9/11.

Highlights of the exhibit include several sculptures from the DOGNY statue project (one of which is shown in the photo) and the winners of the “Salute to Search and Rescue Dogs” art contest, hosted by the museum (two, shown in the photo).

Someone posted on the Museum's Facebook about meeting two physicians who managed the mobile surgical unit at ground zero. The physicians told him that patients were placed into two categories: the walking wounded, and the search and rescue workers, which were the majority of patients they saw. Their patients included the SAR dogs, who like their handlers, were treated for dehydration, exhaustion, eye and extremity trauma from hot or sharp debris, and chemical irritants. "Many of these dogs and their handlers succumbed to the long term effects of inhalation injuries from particulates and carcinogens," wrote John Kowalski. "Let there be no doubt that they gave their all for this mission."

A bill in California to modernize an archaic system of providing blood for dogs who need transfusions has overwhelmingly passed the legislature. Currently, California is the only state that relies on two “closed colony” blood businesses. In it, these businesses “house hundreds of dogs, mostly greyhounds, for the sole purpose of draining their blood.” That will come to an end if the Governor signs the bill. And he should.

A whistleblower who “volunteered to walk dogs” at one of the blood bank businesses says she “was horrified by the conditions she witnessed there. “‘The filth was out of control… There were rat droppings and cockroaches crawling out from under the grates.’” She says she “adopted one dog that looked especially abused. “‘His skin was raw. He was skinny and looked like he was dying’”: https://nbcnews.to/2Tdl9IC.

AB 1282 would allow veterinarians to voluntarily collect blood from the dogs of their clients: https://bit.ly/3fMVbZa.

If you live in California, now is the time to make your voice heard. Contact the Governor and urge him to sign AB 1282: https://govapps.gov.ca.gov/gov40mail/.
