With the recent dog seizures in VZC here is one of the laws:

What is Cruelty to a Non-livestock Animal?

Penal Code 42.092 prohibits a person from intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly:

torturing an animal (felony)
in a cruel manner killing an animal (felony)
in a cruel manner causes serious bodily injury to an animal (felony)
poisons, kills, or causes serious bodily injury to the animal without the owner’s consent (felony)
failing to provide reasonable care to an animal in the person’s custody (misdemeanor)
unreasonably abandons an animal in the person’s custody (misdemeanor)
transports or confines the animal in a cruel manner (misdemeanor)
causes bodily injury to the animal without the owner’s consent (misdemeanor)
causes one animal to fight with another (felony)
uses a live animal as a lure in a dog race (felony)
seriously overworks the animal. (misdemeanor)

The $ 50,000.00 bond for the 17 dogs in VZC is a sizeable penalty. Glad to see that come.

To have the bond set at $ 50k is huge for an animal case. Abuse / cruelty to non livestock animals holds a stiffer penalty now. I don’t want to misquote the law. Texas Humane Legislation Network was instrumental in getting stiffer laws passed in the last session.

Here is what happens to animal abusers in VZC. Think about it. Thanks to the VZC Sheriff Office and the SPCA of Texas

And did you realize that the month of April is awareness month for abused animals? It gave me great pleasure to see this guy arrested. Thanks to the SPCA of Texas and the Van Zandt County Sheriff office. To bring charges against and animal abuser of non livestock animals comes a lot from Texas Humane Legislation Network (THLN)working to get this last passed and improved over the years. The vet for the SPCA was there. She said the dogs were doing surprisingly well. She said they are sweet doggies.
