Lusters Lops “Cloud”…..For a bunch of reasons Cloud wasn’t originally a keeper but we’ve decided that she’ll stay and when she gets older we will evaluate again. (No editing, no flash was used and all lights were off. Only light was from windows mid-day sun).

Here’s a sample of “Luxe” fur in lilac color. No flash was used and there was no editing of the video. (Normal lights were on). We will do a post very soon describing and showing the exact length and elasticity of Luxe fur. It’s slightly longer than Rex fur and has slightly more elasticity so it’s not a full fly back coat.
No flash or editing at all but general lighting was on.

Someone sent a message asking for photos of some of the satin Holland lops and satin mini lop x Holland lops we made the last few years as we crossed five breeds to make the Fire Luxe Lop. These are some of the F2 and F3s….note the straight whiskers😉.

The difference between Rex fur and Luxe fur. The mommy on the left is a blk torte mpl with Plush fur. The mommy on the right is a mpl with Luxe fur (satin-plush fur). We named the breed “Fire Luxe Lops” to distinguish the difference. As you can see it’s much shinier than a regular coat. Flash not used and photo not altered. Note - The satin-Rex-plush fur (aka Luxe fur) will molt twice a year just as a Rex coat does. I’ll get close-up of some of the to show the curly whiskers which are a distinguishing trait of Rex coats and Luxe coats.

This is one of our F5 five-week olders who is a “Fire Luxe Lop”. If you look closely she has the curly whiskers which are very important. If she didn’t have the curly whiskers/Rex fur she’d just be a shiny normal furred lop. She’ll be staying on to become a mum💜🐰 and her kits will be F6*.

Here you can see the difference between a satin carrier Rex-furred lop and a satin-Rex lop. Grandma and mom worked together to build a nest yesterday!

Hi Everyone. For those of you who just came over to our page from the Reza group, we wanted to provide a little bit of extra context around the purpose of this page.

***

Lusters Lops and Capella Farm have been working on a small cross-breed rabbit with lop ears and rex-satinized fur. We would like to share some of our progress, challenges and observations. As this crowd can relate to, it has taken several years, a lot of problem-solving and, in our case, multiple rounds of imports to get to this point. We have created this page in case anyone is interested in the details and would like to ask us questions or start a discussion.

Why are we reaching out?
We would like to start discussions to support other breeders who might have similar goals. We also recently learned about something called “satin syndrome”--which was a challenge during the development of several other animal breeds with satinized fur. We are not scientists. We aren’t satin or rex experts. We just liked the concept of this breed and wanted to focus on it. We don’t have all the answers either. What we do have are our own observations to contribute–which we hope will help other breeders.

Giving credit where credit is due
It would have taken us a great deal longer to get where we are had we started from scratch–mixing hollands, mini-lop mixes, mini rexes and mini satins. It also would not have given us the type that we were looking for.

During the first couple years, we hadn’t realized exactly how di-hybrid and partial recessive genes interact which slowed down our progress. Luckily, as many do, we stood on the shoulders of giants and we now have a decent number of shiny lop rabbits to show for it. We were able to import multiple European satinized mini plush lops, which saved us about a decade of work. Christine Toyer (Malvina Lakes Plush Lops) and a few English and German breeders [that contributed to her lines] developed the foundational rabbit genetics that helped to kick-start our project.

Let’s Work Together
We hope that we will be able to work with other breeders on this project in the near future. At this time, we are working to establish a strong and healthy foundation herd. We still have quite a long way to go before we have something “ready to release” as breeding stock but we wanted to start talking about a satin-rex lop rabbit and share our wins as well as our struggles.

Satin syndrome
We have recently learned about a health issue called satin syndrome–which is brought on by the “stacking” of multiple recessive genes. It may also be that the lop trait further complicates things. These problems often arise between 3 and 11 months of age and can include enlarged kidneys (which may appear as excessive thirst), low bone density and respiratory issues. We wanted folks to be aware of it and have a platform to share information in case these issues arise.

I have pinned the links to a satin syndrome article and an article about the lop trait.

If you are interested in how to get your rabbits tested for satin syndrome, please reach out to Stephanie Cardine (Lusters Lops) directly.
