Kiska will be 10 years old in under 2 months! She has been looking for a home for 2 years now. She REALLY is a sweetheart once she knows and trusts you. Won't someone give her the chance to be in your life?! She breaks my heart as she is so deserving and doesn't have a single application in 2 years!

Name: Kiska
Breed: Husky x Malamute
S*x: Female
Age: 8 years old
Cats: No
Dogs: No
Kids: No

Well, hello! My name is Kiska, and I am a gorgeous Husky Malamute mix. I was born on March 11, 2015. Like my breeds are known to be, I can be assertive and stubborn. I would like to find a confident and experienced owner; someone I know I can trust and follow. I need a home with no other pets please! I am visually impaired, which is a major contributing factor to my undesirable behaviours.

I need an adult only home, with someone who can take me for walks a couple of times a day. I am used to being an inside pet and having access to a fenced yard. In the summer, I prefer to hang out indoors where it is cooler. I am used to being left alone for up to 8 hours a day. I am crate trained and house trained. I enjoy taking over your couch and I do not like to move, so we need to work on this. Building a good relationship where I learn to respect you will help a lot.I also guard my food/toys and like to dive into my food before I am released to get it. I like my food!

I can also be standoffish. It can take me some time to get comfortable, and I don’t like to be crowded or have people go in for pets. Once we have a connection, I can be very loving. I will tell you when I need to go outside and when I would like back in. I am very chatty and can hold a conversation with you! I also love squeaky toys. I do enjoy walking, but I will need to be better muzzle-trained and a basket muzzle used for walks due to my displeasure of other dogs approaching me and invading my space. Remember, I cannot see them well. I have bitten 2 dogs due to this :( I can easily be muzzled for grooming and restraint, of course once I know you.

I do have a reported bite history on a toddler; and I do growl and lift lips as a warning. I have been said to have bitten a handful of times throughout the last 7 years (unreported). Let me come to you and please respect my need for space. I do know some commands like, sit, paw, and lay down. I could probably learn more too. A great routine would be very helpful for me too. I haven’t met a cat before but given my breed mix, it is probably best to avoid them completely. I am not good with other dogs, and I will not be placed in a home with children.

Due to being vision impaired, my other senses are heightened. I am always on high alert with my ears, and I will startle and react to the slightest noise. I will run to the fence when the mailman or utility guys come to the house in an effort to scare them off. I will need to be put away when there is a stranger coming into the home to prevent any incidents. Be prepared to listen to my singing while I am away though. I do not like to be closed away from my humans or behind doors. I greet people well on leash most of the time when I am outside, just am not comfortable with strangers entering my home/space unannounced. I have warned and then lunged at a couple of people while on leash.

I am microchipped. I will be adopted on a strict non-breeding contract given my age.

Name: Tucker
Breed: Siberian Husky Mix
S*x: Male
Age: 10-11 Years
Dogs: Yes
Cats: No
Kids: Yes

Hello Everyone! My name is Tucker and I am roughly 10-11 years old. However, don’t let my age deter you! I have a lot of energy for my age. I have had 2 homes already and find myself in rescue now through no fault of my own.
I am great with other dogs and humans of all sizes, so I think I should find a home relatively quickly, however, I haven’t had any interest at all yet, and that makes me really sad.

I do have a high prey drive, so need a home without cats please. I do well with everyone else though! I do need a refresher on my basic obedience commands, but I did pass a course when I was younger. I am a bit strong on the leash, but should pick back up on that in no time as well!

I can be destructive when I am left home alone, so anything that I can chew needs to be put up high. I am not crate trained and tend to make a lot of noise when crated. Free range is better in a space with nothing to destroy. I still make a bit of noise when loose but much less than I do if left in my crate. I do seem to have a bit of separation anxiety and would do best in a home where someone is home more often than not. I also would like a home with another dog as that seems to comfort me.

I do love to laze around on my bed or yours throughout the day though as well! I am house trained and good with grooming. In the boarding kennel, I am quiet and obedient. I should be just fine living in any living situation. I do not try to dig or climb fences to escape, but I am a bit of a door barger and really want to be out doing stuff with my people!

While I don’t think I can be described as high energy, I can certainly keep up with you on walks! I am a grazer with food. I am learning how to be on a set schedule though, and am doing well with that!

If you are looking for an easy-keeper, look no further and get that application in for me now!
While I do have a friend, Tilap, I do not have to be adopted with him at all. However, should you be interested in adopting 2 dogs, we do get along really well together and would be good to stay together.

As an easy senior dog, I am eligible for the seniors for seniors program. Individuals 65+ do not have to pay for me - my fee will be sponsored by good samaritans!

I am neutered and microchipped. I am ready to go home with you!

Remembering Betty White! Betty White, the hilarious actress and also animal lover and advocate, would have been 102 today! 3 years ago, the Betty White challenge happened, and we received nearly $3500 in one day!

Sadly, the Betty White page does not condone the continuation of the challenge beyond that one day, so annual donations in her name virtually stopped.

That doesn't mean she shouldn't be remembered! If you choose to donate in her honor, you can do so at [email protected] via e-transfer or PayPal. We cannot issue tax receipts as we are not registered as a charity.

Happy heavenly birthday, miss Betty!

Beau is now urgent. Can't anyone foster him?

Name: Beau
Breed: Siberian Husky mix
S*x: Male
Age: 2.5 years
Cats: No
Dogs: Selective
Kids: Yes

Hi there, my name is Beau and I am 2.5 years old. I am here seeking a home that will let me be inside or outside as I see fit. I need a fenced in yard please as I am an escape artist and have previously been hit by a car (thankfully, I am ok!).

I am a pretty typical husky! I am very smart, and am not overly treat motivated. I do know some basic commands, but need to work on my leash walking skills and my recall. Being a smart boy though, it should be fairly easy to train me once you figure out ways to work around my intelligence and stubbornness. I would love to learn under your guidance, and possibly the guidance of a trainer.

I am house-trained and crate trained! I typically eat my breakfast and my dinner in my crate. My 3 sisters and I do not share food bowls, so I am not sure how I would be if that was asked of me. I don’t show any sign of food aggression while outside, so I might be able to adapt to that in time. I do like to dig holes when I am outside, and am destructive if left alone inside the house and not in a crate.

I live with 3 female dogs, and have not been interacted with any male dogs, so I have no idea how I would be with a male dog. A meet and greet would be required with any prospective new family pets to ensure we get along. Please, no cats. I live with children and am good with them, so I can be with children!

I currently live as an indoor/outdoor dog, and my family believes I would thrive best in this type of arrangement. I am inside at night, and in a barn during the work day. I then get time in the yard to run around with the other dogs, or inside the house if it is not a work day. I think with a bit of adjustment, and enough exercise, I could adapt to full-time house life, though!

If you think you are able to provide a stimulating environment for a husky, please apply for me today!

I am neutered and up to date on all of my vaccinations. My adopter will be provided with an already registered microchip to have inserted by their veterinarian as I am not yet microchipped. I am ready to go home with you!

• Located in Bancroft, ON – $500 adoption fee
• With owner- needs foster or adopter
• Looking for a home since July 2024.

Courtesy post:

Need to find a placement ASAP.

We have been fostering a 5 year old neutered Malamute that needs a forever home that does NOT have any livestock. He would love a large space to run and someone who likes to play as he is very playful and then spend time cuddling on the couch. He needs a strong owner who can handle his strength as he is not used to being on leash due to being free to roam on our property. He is very mild tempered and quiet. He is such a big suck and needs love and cuddles often.

He is great with:
-Other dogs
-Cats
-Car rides
-Being off leash
-Going for hikes and runs
-Cuddles
-Confident people comfortable with large dogs
-Electric collar

He is good with:
-Kids(ours are young and he has tolerated them but needs a space to escape them but would be much happier with older ones who can play with him)
-Crate trained(although he hasn't been in one in a while)
-Being inside when you are in(as he likes to just be near his humans)
-strangers(a couple tradesmen he did not like but both were not comfortable with him and he could sense it) Anyone who gives him a confident pet, treat or talk to he is ok.
-Dog toys, doesn't typically destroy them
-Being tied up(as long as he is fairly close to his people otherwise he is vocal)
-Recall is good with space and limited distractions

He is NOT good with:
-Livestock/poultry of any kind
-Small animals (cats have been fine but not other small animals)
-Kids running or screaming(although he is great at removing himself from the room if its too much or asking to go out)
-Being left alone in the house with any food(dog food bins, anything on counters or tables-he does figure out most type of Tupperware bins almost so you don't even know how it was opened)

Located near the Ottawa Valley. Up to date on vaccination and vet check as of Aug. 30, 2024.

Name: Belle
Breed: Siberian Husky Mix
S*x: Female
Age: 2Years
Dogs: Yes - MANDATORY
Cats:No
Kids: Yes

Hi there, my name is Belle because I am just so beautiful! I am here seeking a forever home where someone is almost always home as I do have quite a bit of separation anxiety. I also require a home that has at least one other dog in the home, and preferably a detached home without a fenced yard that will strictly use a sturdy tether when I am outside as I am quite an escape artist as well.

I could be described as a velcro dog. I would love to go absolutely everywhere with my human. If this is not possible, than doggy daycare is lilely a good idea as I am very destructive when left alone, and destroy crates as well. I can be crated at night, but only if it is in your bedroom. I don’t like to be alone, ever! Yay for being another COVID puppy not raised properly and taught that being alone is normal! I love humans of all sizes after a brief bit of apprehension upon initial greeting. Foster mom runs a daycare, and while I am still settling in and being kept from direction interaction with all the little humans, I would love to be with them!

I absolutely adore other dogs, and seeing them interact with the humans and themselves is really helping me come out of my shell quickly! I will need an existing dog in my home to hopefully help me learn to be a little less reliant on constant human companionship. I have not met any cats, so it is likely best to avoid them. I do know some basic commands like sit, but stay and come need some work. Even though I am very attentive to my human, I am a husky afterall! I chewed my cable tether on day 2 in my foster home and required several helping hands to get me secured again. I do pull on the leash as I quite like to sniff the ground as well. Perhaps we could do scent sports to help me work my mind?

I like to be outside, but prefer if you are out there with me as well! Bundle up - let’s go explore something new. If you wish for me to come over to go outside, I will be right there. Otherwise, it takes some coaxing with treats to get me to listen. Will you be my outdoor active adventure companion? Or even just my car ride chauffeur? I do love a good drive as well! There is so much to see and smell in the big wide world!

I am up to date on my rabies vaccination and microchipped. I will be adopted on a strict non-breeding and spay contract. I am booked on April 3rd at the rescue vet clinic in Kitchener, but hope to get one sooner! I am ready to go home with you!

• Located in Peterborough, ON – $500 adoption fee - $250 rebate at proof of spay if not done at rescue vet

We are looking for area reps to join our team! If you'd like to help us, please send us a message!

Area rep tasks are as follows:

1.Area reps are responsible for soliciting, collecting, and storing donations for the rescue and distributing to fosters as instructed by Melissa Van Grootel or another authorized representative. Supplies to gather and store include: food, leashes, collars, crates, treats, tags and microchips (will be sent to you), auction donations, monetary donations (to be sent directly to Melissa Van Grootel for holding), any other dog supplies such as cable tethers, fencing materials, dog houses, etc. Are also appreciated to give our dogs the extra sense of security in their foster homes

2.Area reps are responsible for setting up local fundraising and adoption events, and attending the events whenever possible. We maintain a google calendar of when and where events are being held, as well as have a group chat with all the team members on facebook so that we can all discuss amongst ourselves when and where events (and anything else) will be held. We ask that all area reps help us build a positive relationship in their community through respectful communication with local businesses and groups. If we can make a presence monthly or bi-monthly in each area, that is fantastic. You will also be responsible for contacting local fosters and owners with available dogs to ask them to attend the adoption events.

3.Area reps are responsible for contacting local veterinary clinics to inquire on their rescue pricing, policies and whether they are accepting new clients. It is very important that we expand our veterinary relationship roster for each area so that we have veterinary options when an available dog needs care. All finalizing of rescue-vet relationships is done by Melissa Van Grootel, but your assistance in opening the communication is greatly appreciated!

4.Area reps are responsible for local transports whenever possible. Whether it be a new shelter intake from your local area that needs to be picked up, or a supplies transport to a foster in your area, or a vet appointment transport that the foster is unable to do, your assistance is greatly appreciated! We ask that you be available within a 1-hour radius of your area.

5.Area reps are responsible for generating a positive presence both on and off-line for the rescue, including sharing posts from the SMART page on local facebook groups (where allowable by group rules), recruiting foster homes locally, conducting home visits for prospective adopters/fosters, as well as the other listed tasks above. You may also be asked to do related tasks that are not listed at any given time.

If you think you can dedicate time and effort to this task, let us know!

We have an alumni needing a new home due to life changes.

Name: Pumba (was Snow)
Gender: Female
Age: 11 years
Dogs: selective
Cats: NO
Kids: Yes

Pumba is super sweet. And makes our home a home. She is very welcoming and loving. She loves going to the dog park. And on long walks, but she is a puller so she needs to be trained on not to pull. She knows basic commands like sit, back, lay down, let’s go, go get it.

She doesn’t like to eat or share her food with any other dogs around. Her treats and foods are just for her. She also sometimes doesn’t do well in a leash being introduced to another dog.

She cannot be around small dogs, as her initial reason for intake 8 years ago was her escape and fatal attack on a small dog with her first owner.

She will be staying with her adopter until a new home is found, so patience is appreciated as this is a very difficult decision for them. She does not require a foster home, but does require an adopter!

She is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped. She's ready to go home!

Located in Cobourg, ON - $125 adoption fee

Please join us in mourning the loss of one of our dear alumni today :'(

Penny (aka Cyclone as I called her while in foster) has had cancer for the last year, but was doing so well until the last couple of months. .She's been in and out of the vet lately, and today, her body just gave up the fight.

Penny was the constant companion of her owner, Stephen. Stephen has had his own medical problems the last couple of years, which has put a strain on his finances. He's now going to the hospital as he's not coping well at all with the loss of Penny just 2 hours ago!

Every year, Penny enjoyed one of our pawboxes! This year, we gave her one free of charge, and sent it as soon as the postal strike ended. She thoroughly enjoyed her last Christmas!

Stephen designed our logo, and gave cyclone Penny the best home for the last 8 years. He hasn't once asked for any financial assistance, but we know he could sure use some support with the recent vet bills and also notes of encouragement. His email address is: [email protected] if you feel inclined to assist with Penny's vet bills, or just send Stephen a bit of support and encouragement.

Hi everyone! My name is Finnegan, or Finn for short, and l am a bright-eyed and bushy tailed sweetheart.I love to be around people and get lots of attention and give it back! I am medium sized,60 lbs. .I am seeking a very active forever home!

I need a lot of exercise, but afterwards, I am pretty good about settling down if you are working or go out. I just rest up quietly and watch out in case you move a muscle, because then I am right there to see what you are doing! But then I’ll settle down again if nothing is happening. Although watch out when you let me out of my crate, because l am going to race around and bounce up and down and act crazy for a bit!

l love going on walks and runs and am learning not to pull, although I do get excited by other dogs and will sometimes bark or jump a bit. But I'm learning that my foster mom will give me a treat if I walk nicely past, so l am starting to just look for that instead! I don't worry at all about bikes, cars, street cars, city noises, so I would be fine in a busy place once l learn to walk nicely. I also would love to be a running companion. My foster mom says I run better than my foster siblings because I don't stop to try and pick up garbage! Running tires me out more, but l am good with just walking too,and as long as I get some good mileage in the morning and late afternoon,I'm pretty calm after a play session with my sister.(Okay, maybe a fairly long play session).

l love to play with my foster sister, we run around chasing each other or just wrestle. I sometimes get a little rough and she tells me off and then I argue with her, but we get over it pretty fast. I am not as sure about my foster brother, and l am a little bit more protective of food and toys (and my foster mom) around him, but I am okay with my sister. With my foster parents, I am not possessive at all, although I haven't been trained to release things, but I give them up and l am learning to do it on command.

I am house trained and crate trained. I also know sit and down, but I generally need some treat encouragement, and I have trouble concentrating on commands when I am excited and especially outside when there is so much going on. But,my foster mom says I am really trainable!

I haven't met any kids up close, but I don't react to them. However, when I greet people l am really excited. Unfortunately, I now have a bite history over being corrected/restrained in the home that returned me, so I cannot be with young kids. Older kids may be considered on a case-by-case basis. I don’t try to escape the yard, the crate or dig holes in the yard. I have stolen some food off the counter, so I need to be watched in the kitchen. I'm pretty well behaved, just really really energetic! I do take the opportunity to dart out the door, though! With the proper exercise, I will stop trying to dart out the door as well. Exercise, exercise, exercise!

l am curious, and loving and really want to be a part of a family. I would make a wonderful addition to a loving (but active)home.

l am neutered and microchipped. I am ready to go home immediately!

I, Melissa Van Grootel, started out in rescue in 2009. Initially, I was a cross-poster and had an archived list of every husky/malamute/alaskan I could find on pet finder, adoptapet, petharbour, and various other places for people to be able to see them all in one place. From cross-posting, I moved to arranging transports for various rescues and individuals until 2 groups took over the transport network and took the rescue world by storm with their amazing abilities. Near the end of my reign as a transport coordinator, I started fostering. Fostering started as overnighting dogs who were on transport, and moved to when my rescue life really began.

In August, 2014, almost a year after moving to the country, I took on 11 Alaskan Huskies as foster dogs for a rescue group. 11 dogs at once in addition to my then 8 seemed like a lot of work at first. Little did I know, those Alaskan Huskies would be difficult to adopt out as they were all retired sled dogs and didn’t have the typical ‘husky look’ that is so sought after. The first of that batch of foster dogs was not adopted until a little over 4 months of them arriving, and the last of them were transferred to other rescues, with a few adoptions in there, after almost 8 months.

Immediately after that batch left, I stepped into action to assist a fellow musher in doing a drastic downsizing in 2014/2015. In this particular case, the majority of the dogs stayed with the owner until they were adopted. I posted the photos and wrote the bios for each dog, and every applicant went through the adoption process. Only, instead of me making the decision where dogs go, the owner made that call. Each dog was adopted on a contract that required dogs be returned to the owner if things did not work out.

As I was finishing up that mission, and struggling to rehome the last couple of dogs, Alaskan Huskies once again, I was approached by a rescue which hadn’t operated in years, in March 2016. If I accepted the offer to run that rescue as I was already running mine, it would allow doors to open having an official name, and funding would be an option, should I accept the offer. I accepted the offer, and ran that rescue successfully until June 2018 when circumstances beyond control caused a break-up.
