Pets In Pairs This page is about "bonded pairs" the two pets that can't be separated when being adopted. True some species are social animals-they need cage mates.

But sometimes two individuals are bonded and need to be adopted together.

I just spoke to a lady who is trying to re-home a cat whom she and her husband have been looking for a new mom or dad to love and care for him.
I'm trying to get permission to adopt him and wanted to make sure he would be happy as an only cat. After reading about the bonded pairs that must stay together I thought I should ask if he's part of a bonded pair.
To the contrary he's not. He's afraid of the other cats and needs to be an only cat. That would be purrfect for my situation.
I'm in an assisted living apartment and if I get permission to adopt a pet I most likely would be to have just one. And the apartment is very tiny.

Pets in a quintet.Or a bonded 5?I'm glad that that we don't usually have to keep a litter of 5 together for a lifetime.

***SECOND CHANCE FOR BOB PETERS*** PLEASE MAKE IT COUNT!

RESCUE FELL THROUGH DUE TO ADOPTER - BOB PETERS HAD a home all lined up and TRANSPORT put together and then our adopter called and said her husband could not accept a cat that would use a litter box in the house !!! WHAT?! We are beyond devastated because now Bob Peters does not have anywhere to go. He has a bonded brother Saint Nick 188815 (not on list tonight).

***ON EMERGENCY AT RISK PLACEMENT LIST FOR SATURDAY 2/17/24 DEADLINE IS NOON. ***
https://newhope.shelterbuddy.com/animal/list

NEW PHOTO - Bob Peters and Saint Nick 188815 were sadly brought into the ACC due to their owner passing away and there was no one else to claim them. Now these two kitties are looking for a new home.

Bob Peters is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Bob Peters tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

A volunteer writes: Bob Peters arrived as a stray, so not much is known about him yet. He is slowly warming up to the shelter environment, but would appreciate being approached in a calm and quiet manner. He likes to spend his free time in his den, enjoying some privacy. He is a sweet boy, and just waiting for that patient, experienced cat person to take him to his forever home.,/p>

Please check here for updated adoption hours.

A volunteer writes: This is a story about progress. Bob Peters is a very sweet and special guy who came to us with a fabulous sense of commitment. Early on, Bob Peters decided that the Care Center wasn't really his thing. There's just too much going on for a gentle kitty like himself and thus, he has spent quite a bit of time in his beloved den. When I first introduced myself to Bob Peters, he wasn't so sure about me and remained in the den. Sometimes making a new friend takes time, so each shift I would offer him some squeeze up treats and talk with him while he snacked. For weeks I visited with Bob Peters and hopefully offered my friendship, but he took only the snack and stayed committed to his den. Well, imagine my joy when, after snack time, Bob Peters leaned his head into my hand and softly purred. Earnestly presenting his neck for some scritches and his chin for some rubs, Bob Peters met me halfway and welcomed me. Bob Peters knows that success takes practice and looks different for everyone, but sharing patience and love is unparalleled.

Hello, my name is Bob Peters. My animal id is #188814. I am a desexed male black cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/5/2023.

Bob Peters is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. What my friends at ACC say about me:
My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet!
I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

Behavior History
Behavior Assessment
Upon intake Bobera was shy and fearful. Bobera was growling in her carrier when staff went to pick her up. Staff was able to take pictures without issue.

Date of Intake: 12/5/2023

Basic Information:: Bobera is a black cat that was brought into BACC due to the owners recent passing.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Bob Peters was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

Upon intake Bob Peters was shy and fearful. Bob Peters was growling in his carrier when staff went to pick him up. Staff was able to take pictures without issue.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/10/23
Bob Peters was in his den. I lifted the side panel and saw he was lying down, looking very relaxed. I spoke softly to him and offered treats, but he did not come out of the den. He may just need more time to adjust.

12/27/23
In den and cannot be coaxed out initially. When the den cover is lifted, he is sitting in there with a slightly tense face and body but he looks up and watches me with eyes wide and ears forward. I offer him a tray with squeeze up and place it near the opening of his den and he slowly pokes his head out with eyes wide but begins to eat squeeze up enthusiastically. He is tolerant of a few pets on the top of his head with the tool.

1/3/24
Sitting in his den, I place a tray of tuna down near the den opening and pet him a few times from inside the den with my hand. When I walk away, he pokes his head out and begins to eat from the tray with his ears forward.

1/7/24
Bob Peters was in his den. I removed the side covering and spoke to him. I placed Temptations inside the den, but he showed no interest in eating them. I put Squeeze Up in a dish and held it towards him in the den. He ate it all and emerged half-way out of the den to look for more. I gave him some more Squeeze Up and he allowed me to pet his head as he ate. He went inside the den and ate the Temptations which I had placed there at the beginning of the interaction. I put more treats outside the den and he came out to eat them. He is making good progress every time I see him.

1/12/24
Bob Peters has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. He is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Bob Peters would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Bob Peters is in his den completely hidden from view and cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the assessor moves the den cover, he is sitting with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted slightly and his tail wrapped around his body. When offered the scratcher tool he remains frozen and is tolerant but flinches slightly at brief and light pets from within the den with the scratcher tool. Pick up is not attempted to prevent further FAS.

Bob Peters continues to show similar behaviors upon re-evaluation. He will now, at times, poke his head out to accept squeeze-up treats.
