Rio and Nyx went home 🥹

Rio is the only horse to be born at the rescue. After bringing Sedona home from the auction, emaciated and sick with a respiratory illness, she gave birth to baby Rio. For the past year we have cared for our miracle baby and watched him grow. He has developed into a sweet and charismatic young man capturing the hearts of all he meets.

Nyx was feral and unhandled until she came to us this spring. After some socialization, she proved to be an extremely confident and intelligent girl.

There wasn't a dry eye as we watched these two start their journey toward their new home in Colorado. We are so grateful that we were able to give these guys a good start and can't wait to see the adventures they get up to from here.

Thank you to everyone who has helped support the journeys of these two and so many others, we couldn't do this without you 💜

We got some bad news on Sweet Sequoia 😞

Older horses can be tough to find good homes for. Even if they are rideable, once they are over 20 their number of interested adopters plummets exponentially. If they have a condition that requires constant maintenance that number again dramatically drops.

Yesterday we heard back from our vet who confirmed our suspicions that Sequoia has Equine Cushings. This is a condition that can be treated, but not cured. While Sequoia can still be a wonderful riding partner, she may be a horse that will need a little extra attention and vet care to ensure her quality of life remains high.

Cushings is surprisingly common and under-diagnosed in senior equines. If you are looking for a partner and aren't afraid of a buddy who is a little special needs (I mean, who isn't a little special needs when you look close enough 😉) Sequoia is still searching for her forever ♾️🩷

Sacred update:

Thank you so so much to everyone who donated to help us get Sacred safe and seen by the vet. ❤️ Sacred is doing well and in the care of trusted friends in Iowa. He was supposed to be on the trailer coming home late last week, but unfortunately the hauler had to cancel the trip. He will be cared for in Iowa for a couple more weeks before hopping on the trailer and heading west!

We are so grateful for all the support we received for his case and are so fortunate to have such a wonderful, caring community 🥰

Available for adoption!

Dulce is a super sweet and spunky 5 year old Arabian mare. Standing at 15 hands, she has been lightly started under saddle walk/trot in the round pen and is available as a project horse. She is developing great softness and feel. Dulce is in your pocket and loves to please. Loads well, ties well, is good to saddle, lines up to the fence for mounting, stands well for the farrier (usually) and is easy to catch in the field.

If you are interested in learning more about adopting Dulce, more info is available through the link below 😊

Starting a horse under saddle at 14 or 15 can have its specific challenges, but we have had great luck in giving horses a great education later in life and finding them amazing homes! A few other older gals that were started here and continue to flourish in their adoptive homes are Shasta, Valkyrie, and Rogue. We just know Paris will be the next on the list! Who needs this tall, dark, and BEAUTIFUL girl!?

28/06/2024

This is a tough post we didn't want to have to make. For the first time in MSER history, we became apprised of an MSER adopted horse being sold by a horse trader through an auction.

Sacred was adopted by a family in Iowa just over a year ago. They drove all the way to Wyoming and fell in love with him. Unfortunately, through recent hard times, Sacred's adopter temporarily placed him in another person's care who then took him to an auction. Since then he has traded hands several times. We were able to get the contact of the person who had him when he was consigned to another sale as an 18 year old family trail horse (which he most certainly is not). All of his paperwork has been lost as has his identity.

The good news is we were able to purchase Sacred prior to him going to another sale and us losing contact with him to the tune of $1200. The bad news is that he is in rough shape and currently at the emergency vet in Iowa. He is thin, has opaque discharge from his nostrils, and is shakey. We don't know how this will end, but we are extremely grateful for the reputable rescue in Iowa for picking him up and caring for him and our network with ASPCA Right Horse.

We are looking at a hefty emergency vet bill that will bring our current costs near $4000, but we trust our rescue friends when they say he needs help. After everything this poor guy has gone through, we feel awful. We don't know if he will be able to come home or if the last act of kindness will be in his best interest, but we are here to follow through with what he needs.

If you are able, please consider donating to Sacred's fund. This was definitely an unplanned expense but we couldn't do nothing. Last two photos are of Sacred while he was here with us ❤️

UPDATE! We have raised the $550 to cover current farrier bills through PayPal ❤️❤️❤️ thank you so much! 🥰
We will leave this up in case anyone would like to send a little something for vet bills and operating costs including feed, supplements, etc

Y'all are amazing, thank you so much ❤️❤️

Our farrier left! 😭 For the past few years we have been blessed with an amazing and supportive farrier who was wonderful and patient with our horses and gave us a HUGE discount on hoof trims. Unfortunately for us (but we wish her all the best in her next step ❤️) her life has taken her several states away from us🥺.

This also means our farrier bill has more than doubled every four weeks! We are now paying $55 for a trim, which is still quite cheap compared to much of the country but adds up with 14 horses! Pair this with over $1000 in recent vet bills, and we could really use some sponsored trims!

We take hoof care very seriously at MSER. You know the saying: No Hoof, No Horse! We make an effort to clean hooves multiple times per week to reduce risk of thrush, abscesses, and bruises, and our horses are on a strict 4-8 week farrier schedule depending on their needs.

Are you able to sponsor or partial sponsor a hoof trim(or maybe some vet bills? 😉)? Every little bit helps, it takes a village ❤️

About a month ago, Rio learned how to trailer! He was a little wary of the whole thing at first (we want him to get in THAT??), but with a little encouragement and lots of praise, he was stepping up and down from the trailer bed like a pro! It only took about 15-20 minutes all told to get him comfortable with it - we couldn't be prouder of our little man!

Did you know we have a Patreon? We updated our followers there the day after Rio's trailer experience, including an adorable video of his very first time stepping up! Patreon is a great way for our followers to help support our mission, while receiving exclusive, behind-the-scenes content we don't always share elsewhere. Please consider joining our Patreon for as low as only 3️⃣ a month! Each little bit goes a long way to helping our rescue ❤️

Do you know what an equine hoof abscess is? They can be really painful and scary and poor Aengus recently had one. Luckily he is feeling much better!
If you're curious, we recently made a longer video on what an abscess is, how horses get them, and what recovery looks like in treating them. Check it out through the link below!

PS. We are working to get monetized on YouTube, so while you're there, please stay awhile and look around we have lots of other educational and fun content on there! 😊❤️

We asked what you all were interested in seeing more of from us and you responded with pretty much everything 😅 so we will do the best we can!

Here is Miss Sister getting ready for her sunrise ride this morning 🥰 Sister is planning to go to a schooling show tomorrow! She still gets a bit nervous going to new places and is still working through some buddy sourness, but even if we just do showmanship and ride a bit in the warm up arena, it will be an awesome experience for her!

PS. This pretty lady is still available for adoption! Check out our website for more info!

You may have seen recently that Aengus had suddenly become severely lame, to the point of not being able to put any weight on his leg at times and hopping to get around. We visited the vet earlier this week so we could get to the bottom of the cause of his lameness. Thankfully, they were able to determine that it was an abscess, and he will recover! With daily medicated wraps and stall rest, the abscess is continuing to drain and Aengus is able to bear more weight back on that leg.

Watch our new video now that details his sudden onset lameness, and our nerve-wracking process of diagnosing it!

This past Monday was Rio's birthday!! 🎂

For , we look back on Rio's first days in this world, and are amazed at how he looks now as a 1 year old. Seems like his Appaloosa ancestry is going to show through strong after all! We picked up his mother from the livestock auction, and she gave birth only two weeks later. Rio is so fortunate to have only known love and security his whole life here at MSER. So much has changed since he came into this world, but he's still our lovable, adorable, funny, and spunky Rio! Happy Birthday baby man! 🎉

First ride! ✅
Dulce is such a smart girl and just loves to please. She likes to keep her brain active and loves to learn. Also, scratches are most appreciated! First rides around here are typically short and always in a halter (although not always ba****ck 😂). We also typically only use one rein the first time or two and that is so we allow the horse to get used to us being on them without accidentally giving them too many signals they don't know and making them frustrated (silly humans and our muscle memory). Dulce will be nice and soft in that halter before she sees a bridle. There is no timeline, she will be ready when she is ready, but by the way things are going we don't expect it to be too far off 😉

Transformation Tuesday! Swipe to see Aengus transform from being in pain to a willing partner!

Aengus was sold to a new owner without disclosing his pre-existing problems—he was expressing a lot of aggression to touch, and biting hard and fast. Euthanasia was a likely option before his new owner got in touch with us, and we took him in! After spending some time with him, we concluded that Aengus’s aggression stemmed from a lot of back pain and lameness from an ignored clubbed foot, likely a result of years of riding in a poorly fitting saddle, and improper hoof care. No one was listening to his pain, so he escalated to stronger methods to avoid inflaming his conditions. Over the years, we have put hours into treating both his physical pain, and healing his mental trauma. Now, Aengus has a lot more trust in humans, that we will listen when he talks to us. It’s hard to describe our happiness the first time he was able to canter comfortably in his pasture, a gait he wasn’t able to achieve when he first arrived!

Aengus has come so far, and is now available for adoption! Visit our website for more information on him and how to submit an application!

Did you know that, though the coat colors "roan" and "varnish roan" are very similar (so similar that they share a common word in their names), they're actually caused by two completely different genes? The Leopard Complex (one of the oldest color modification genes in history!) causes a coat color that looks really similar to your typical true roan--but there are a few key differences!

We've gotten a lot of curiosity lately about the coat color of Opal, one of our current resident Appaloosas! If you've wondered about what color she is (or a...

May is adopt a horse month!! Looking for your summer buddy? MSER has 2 rideable horses available for adoption with a third coming soon!

Sister is a beautiful, 15.1 hand, 22 year old registered APHA chestnut mare with a puppy dog personality. She LOVES attention and being groomed. She has had kids on her while on lead line and done well. Don't let her age fool you, this girl is a gorgeous mover and is forward. We recommend an advanced rider or an intermediate rider working with a trainer. She can have some anxiety and does best when her rider has the confidence to support her through that with one-rein stops, leg yields and arcs, rather than pulling on two reins. She ties, lunges, is easy to tack up and love on, trailers well in a stock trailer, no buck/bolt, not spooky, great for farrier, and has a great working walk.

Paris is a 15 year old 15.2 hand seal bay mare. She has APHA bloodlines. Paris enjoys attention on her terms and can be quite affectionate but is a horse that likes a job. Forward thinking and brave. Paris was started English at the CSU Right Horse Training program and is currently doing well walk/trot. She will need an advanced rider due to being very green. She is great for the farrier, ties, trailers in a stock trailer, lunges and rides both in saddle and ba****ck.

Chakora will be available for adoption in about 30 days! Chakora is a 15 hand, 10 year old grade mare who will just be completing 90 days with a professional trainer. Chakora had an episode of bilateral THO early last year but was in surgery quickly and has made a full recovery. Vets said there is no chance of the condition resurfacing. She is walk/trot/canter under saddle, has had a rope swung off her and has been used to push cows. Started on collection and lateral work. We think Chakora will also be looking for an advanced rider or potentially an intermediate working with a trainer due to her still being green. We are not recommending her for any super competitive discipline, but she is athletic enough to make a great all around horse.

See our site for more info!

We are so thrilled (and a little late) to post that our wonderful Mesa has been adopted by an amazing family in Nebraska! We are so thankful to her CSU Right Horse Program family who put the fantastic training foundation on her that opened this door for her ❤️

Mesa came to us last fall as a sheriff seizure after being starved. She didnt know a whole lot in the way of halter training and would really rather not deal with people. At only 4 years old (at the time) she came around quickly in both health and ground training. One of our volunteer trainers spent many hours helping her learn to be haltered, be groomed, have her hooves cleaned and then trimmed, and generally be more comfortable around humans. In January, Mesa readily hopped into the trailer with Paris to attend CSU where her learning continued.

We are so so proud of this beautiful girl and her comeback! Let's raise a toast to Mesa, her new family, and all the wonderful people who played a role in getting her there! 🥂

With the arrival of spring comes the disappearance of baby Rio's foal coat! He was born a solid chestnut to an Appaloosa mama, but we've noticed that his b***y is shedding out to reveal a lot of white hairs underneath. What color pattern do you think Rio will turn out to have?

We don't do this very often, but we should. Especially with National Volunteer week just ending! We have so many amazing volunteers doing wonderful things both within and outside of the rescue. There is a saying that goes "I want to be the least interesting person in the room" and I love it because it means you are always surrounded by incredible people who inspire you to keep growing. That is how I often feel about the wonderful humans of this rescue.

Today I want to highlight and congratulate our longtime volunteer, Janette, for successfully defending her PhD thesis yesterday! I was able to attend the defense and it was fantastic! Janette has been one of our most dependable volunteers for the past few years. She has helped with training, exercising, cleaning (of course), and has used her wonderful artistic skills to help us design merchandise and parade floats!

Thank you Dr. Janette, for all your hard work and congratulations on your achievements!

Available for adoption! Paris, a 15 year old, 15.2hh paint mare! We do have this girl's bloodlines, but unfortunately her previous owner was not able to register her before Paris's mother had passed. Paris is a beautiful mare with nice gaits and an athletic build! She is brave through obstacles and thrives off of having a job with clear direction. Paris is a busy minded mare, and has some residual herd bound anxiety, so she requires a confident rider/handler, but when she trusts her person, she is a really cool mare with tons of potential!

We could see Paris enjoying trail rides with friends, light arena work or even playing around with polo!

Paris is currently with the Training program and will be at their showcase next weekend! If youre interested in adopting Paris, please fill out our short adoption interest form
