For those new to K9 Nose Work - you start with Intro to Nose Work where you and your dog spend 6 weeks learning the game, building your dogs independence and learning to recognize your dog’s changes of behavior when they hit odor and find the source of the odor (their favorite treat) in a variety of environments. Next you might spend another 6 weeks in Intro to Odor learning to search for birch, anise or clove odors and working on more challenging odor problems.

Then - if you want to compete in National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) events you need to register your dog and yourself with NACSW and enter an an ORT. At the ORT your dog must identify the one box of 12 closed boxes that contains the birch, and then do the same for anise and likewise for clove.

When your has the ORT Title you can then enter a Nose Work (NW1) trial or a Level 1 element trial.

In an NW1 trial your dog must find the hide (birch, anise or clove or a combination of any ot these) in 4 different searches - an interior, exterior, container and vehicle search. To title your dog must successfully identify the hide in all 4 of these searches in the same day.

For an element trial you can enter a Level 1 container (4 different container searches), exterior (4 different exterior searches), interior (4 different interior searches) or vehicle (4 different vehicle searches) trial. Element trials are half day trials. If you pass all 4 you earn the title for that element. If you miss only one of the 3 searches you get a leg and 2 legs at 2 different element trials will earn a title.

If you want to compete you can. Competition adds a level of challenge and the K9 Nose Work community is a fun welcoming environment.
