Hello! Have you seen our humans?

These are just a few of the faces who found their way into the facility over the weekend looking to reunite with their humans. Please make sure to keep your pet's license and ID up-to-date so should they get out it is easier for them to be reunited with you.
If you wish to claim a pet or view a deceased animal, please contact 311 to book an appointment. Please note, we are a reunification centre, not an adoption facility.
Please make sure that your pet's license and microchip/tattoo information is up-to-date so that should they be found or make their way to our facility, we can quickly reunite you. edmonton.ca/licenseyourpet.ca
**If you have taken the steps to reunite a cat with its owner and remain concerned about its well-being, please book an intake appointment online
https://www.edmonton.ca/residential_neighbourhoods/pets.aspx or phone 311 to book an appointment to bring it into ACCC.*

Anyone in Brookside Community missing a budgie?

We have unfortunate news to share, earlier this week our WILDRescue Truck was stolen from our parking lot.
The police have been contacted and action is being taken but we also wanted to ask if everyone could share this and keep an eye out for it and call our Helpline at 780-914-4118 with any information. The Truck is a White 2007 Toyota Tacoma with a white cap and WILDNorth decals on both sides (as pictured).
This truck is very important to the functioning of our non-profit organization as we use it to rescue and transport injured wildlife in need from all over the Edmonton metropolitan area. Now, with it being stolen and unlikely to be returned, we will need to look to replace it.
We appreciate your help in this matter.

It appears that Christmas in the air as everyone eagerly wraps up their work week with the excitement of a few days break and time to recharge in the company of family and friends including your fur family members. Take the time to ensure that they are also prepared for the holiday season.

4 Holiday Safety Tips for Cats
1. Christmas Trees - If you have decided to put up a real Christmas tree, please bear in mind that Tree water may contain pesticides, fertilizer and even aspirin or other chemicals. Drinking this water can cause poisoning in cats.

2. Ribbons and Tinsel - Often shiny and very distracting, this string like material may cause a dangerous linear foreign body obstruction that requires surgery. Avoid using loose tinsel or other string-like materials and opt for safer pet friendly items.

3. Holiday Plants and flowers - Poinsettias are known for their toxicity to cats, but they tend to have only mildly toxic effects. Holly and mistletoe are more dangerous if ingested. Flowers such as lilies and amaryllis are especially dangerous.

4. House Guests - A highlight for many over the holiday season is entertaining family and friends in our homes add your pet to the mix and noise and chaos ensues.Make sure you provide a safe, comfortable place for your cat to hide and that your guests are aware of his presence so they don’t unwittingly let it out the door upon arriving or leaving the party.

Amazing what you come across when you are out walking dogs!

I copied this post from a post 2 years ago, and although I don’t live right next to a green belt, the message is still a good one. Treat coyotes with the respect and distance they require (they were here before you and I lived here)… remove the food source, which includes leaving food out or letting your pets run free. Let’s all try to avoid another tragic loss of our beloved pets!

It's that time of year again! The next 4-6 weeks is mating season for coyotes. Coyotes can scale a 6' or 7' fence with ease so please check your yards if you live in an area that has urban coyotes before letting your pets out. We urge you to strongly consider NOT letting your dogs or cats out alone. The outcome can be tragic as they can and will attack your pets.

Our home backs onto an alleyway with a greenbelt behind us and several times in the past few weeks we have seen coyotes wandering down the alley and some coming close to the fence line hanging out where they know dogs and cats run free in back yards. The community page often has posts with camera footage of coyotes scaling the fences of the properties that back onto the lake and we have had a few coyotes strolling down our street in the early afternoons.

While the wild canine has been driven into residential areas because urban development has encroached on their lands, we still need to be vigilant and protect our pets.

Coyote breeding typically peaks in late February and early March, the gestation period averages 58 to 63 days. Male coyotes can become more aggressive during this time of year, the long and short of it all is that coyotes always pose a risk to your dog (and other small pets). That risk increases during mating season.

How can you help keep your companions safe?

* Never feed coyotes — it is illegal to feed coyotes in most places. Feeding endangers your family and neighbors as it lures coyotes into neighborhoods.

* Keep unattended cats and dogs indoors or in completely enclosed runs, especially at night, and do not assume that a fence will keep a coyote out of your back yard.

* Accompany your leashed pet outside. Make sure you turn on lights if it is dark to check your back yard for unexpected wildlife before letting your pet out.

* Keep dogs on short leashes while walking outside (less than 6').

* Leave noisemakers on hand to scare away coyotes that may enter your yard, such as whistles and horns.

* Yell, clap hands, blow a whistle and try to make yourself look larger if you have a close encounter with a coyote.
