Fridays are never a dull moment here at QVC! This morning Lily presented for a tussle with a porcupine. 🐾

Lily was examined by Dr. Meier, admitted into hospital, heavily sedated and given injectable pain medication. Then the work began! Our team worked quickly to remove a grand total of 394 (!!!) quills from her face, mouth, tongue and palate.

Good luck in your travels Lily, and hopefully you don’t encounter anymore prickly forest friends ☀️🌲

💥Do you travel with your dog to the USA?💥

The CDC and USDA have recently changed the requirements for dogs entering the USA from Canada. These new requirements go into effect on August 1st, 2024.

There are a few key points that are important to note:
🐶 The dog must be six months of age or older to enter the USA.
🐶 The dog must have an ISO compatible microchip implanted prior to rabies vaccination, and the microchip number must be noted on all documentation.
🐶 The dog must appear healthy upon arrival.
🐶 You must provide a CDC Dog Import Form Receipt.
🐶 You must provide official veterinarian endorsed (CFIA) documentation depending on where the animal has resided for the past six months.

This is currently the most up to date information that we have. The CFIA is currently in talks with the USA CDC to clarify and discuss these new requirements.

For more information please visit the CFIA website:

Back in 2022, Whiskey came to us as a young puppy. She was sick and required hospitalization with IV fluids. She was the perfect patient and did great in the clinic.

Fast forward to now, almost two years to the day, and she is still the perfect patient!

It was great to see you, Whiskey! 🐶☀️

For those of you that have been asking how Gracie, one of our RVTs’ internship at Hope For Wildlife is going - she’s having a great time!!

The QVC family is so proud of you Gracie 😊🐾 She also just celebrated her three year anniversary of being an RVT! We are so lucky to have you as a part of the team!!

Did you know that a baby porcupine is called a porcupette?

Two common questions we are asked are: do baby porcupines have quills and how do you handle a porcupine without getting stuck with quills? Both questions are easy to answer!

Firstly, yes, baby porcys have quills. They are soft when they are born, but the harden up soon after. There is not much difference between the quills of an infant and those of its parents apart from length.

As for the second question: thick rubber gloves! We use gloves that the quills have trouble sticking in so that the porcupines don't lose their quills while we handle them.

This spring is shaping up to be a very tick heavy season!

Ticks can be active in temperatures +3 degrees celsius and above. The abnormally warm, dry winter we have had this year has contributed to an influx of ticks on local pets. 😬

This tick was pulled off of a dog here at QVC yesterday. It is important that when you remove a tick from your animal that you get as close to the head as possible, twist and pull up at the same time to ensure you remove the whole tick. If not done correctly, the head can be left behind which will lead to toxins continuing to be secreted into your pet. Once you’ve removed all visible ticks, it is important to give a systemic tick prevention to your animal (if not up to date on prevention) to kill off any residual ticks left behind.

We have a few different options of systemic tick prevention for your companions. We have topical products for cats, and oral products for dogs. We have our monthly prevention stocked at all times.

Please give us a call at (250) 747-2919 to order your tick prevention 🐾☀️

Murdoch Veterinary Clinic Ltd hosted a RECOVER CPR workshop over the weekend. Alex, our lead RVT, was fortunate enough to take part - this is an asset for our clinic as she is now RECOVER CPR certified!! She will be teaching the rest of the team what she learned in a few weeks. This will streamline our CPR protocol for when we have unexpected arrests that present to the clinic.

Thank you to Murdoch Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Jessica Pang and Dr. Danial Pang, as well as all of the sponsors that put this on - including Boehringer Ingelheim. This was an excellent learning opportunity for veterinary staff in Northern BC. 🐶🐱🐾

They draw blood samples from patients, place IV catheters, monitor and treat hospitalized patients, assist in surgery......the list goes on and on!

Emily, Alex, Gracie and Laura - thank YOU for all that you do. QVC wouldn't be the same without you ❤️✨
