Our Story
After my mum was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers/Vascular Dementia in 2013, I felt the need to do something to help those affected with this terrible illness. I did some research into the needs of people living with dementia and found that I could put my skills and love of sewing to good use. I now work from home in a purpose built log cabin, as previously my sewing materials had taken over my lounge/dining room! Quality materials and workmanship is very important to me as I strive to meet a customer's request. The purpose of Dementia Sensory Products, often referred to as Activity or Fidget Blankets, Cushions and Aprons is :- * Designed to stimulate the mind and hands. * Bring enjoyment, prompting conversation. * Help with anxiety and depression. * Make the user more independent. * Improve mood, self-esteem, in turn, wellbeing. * Helps reduce agitation (especially in the latter stages of the illness). * Bright colours aids visual stimulation. * Activities such as doing up zips, tying knots, buttons etc can help with restlessness and calm the user. * The sense of touch can trigger memories in a way that other forms of communication cannot. Before constructing a blanket, cushion or apron it is important to figure out what items/fabric designs/textures may hold special significance for that person eg did they play a sport, a musical instrument, spend time in the garden, kitchen, what hobbies did they have, did they like looking at photos, how did they spend their working life? With those thoughts in mind, the correct fabric, pattern and colour can be chosen i.e. prints - animals, birds, butterflies, flowers, cooking, tractors, boats, camper vans, cars, musical instruments are just a few examples.
Update: Sadly my mum lost her battle with Dementia in December 2017
