Did you know that as of 24th August the pet abduction act comes into play?

This recognises pets as sentient family members that get emotional trauma... rather than property, and can result in 5 years jail time and/or a fine.

Let's hope there less pet thefts from now on.

At the dog show this weekend I met a bunch of lovely ladies who were representing this company. I thought this was an excellent idea, considering I have worked in education with neuurodiverse children and vulnerable young people.

How many of those would have benefitted from something like this?

I saw bulldogs being walked today in Telford town centre. It was 25 degrees. It may not seem hot to the owners but these dogs DO NOT cope with high temperatures.

SPREAD THE WORD...EVERY SUMMER.

Please for the love of sentience, educate everyone you possibly can.

But how can we adjust OUR behaviour to suit their world?

Fennel was the dog that began my journey.

She was reactive, prey driven, fearless, massively food driven and a rabid chewer. She had bitten and was on a warning at the rescue.

But still. I gave her a chance.

I may have regretted that choice for the first 2 years of my life. Walks were panic inducing, coming home to see what she had done this time was stressful and day to day I just don't know how I coped...

I began to research all I could about everything dog. I sat in libraries, talked to every dog owner I could, had meetings with vets and compiled a huge list of thing to do and not do....and as you can imagine, it wasn't all good advice!

We got there in the end and she turned into an absolutely fabulous companion, who was truly loved by everyone as she had such a mischievous personality to go with her amazingly complex intelligence. The stories I could tell!...

When she was gone, it left a huge dog shaped hole in my heart, and I chose to study even more so that I could help people not have to go through what I went through.

I wanted to help people understand why their dogs behave in certain ways and make awesome strong bonds and almost symbiotic relationships with their best friends.

Fennel truly was my soul dog, and I don't think I will ever have a dog like her again. I'm still not ready for another one after 9 years, but I crave one every single day.

This is my video of her that I made almost ten years ago now. I was in my 20s so never mind the hair styles and home decor. I'm a different person now! 😆

What is the most absurd dog related advice you have ever been given?

Yesterday, a breeder had informed my client to never use a harness as it would suffocate their dog.

That was absurd advice.

Among other precious advice nuggets such as

🐕🐕🐕 "We were told when fido gets too much, to hold him down on the floor until he stops"

Never do this.

A) You may get bitten. B) you are teaching your dog learned helplessness c) you are breaking the bond of trust between you and your dog....and SO many other reasons. I could go on....

🐕🐕🐕 "we were told to never walk our reactive dog."

How is this helping? Is it teaching the dog to work through anything with it's triggers? Again, so many questions. In some extreme cases, perhaps. But in general I see this as management of the behaviour but not really offering a solution.

🐕🐕🐕 "we were told to yank his collar and shout no or bop him on the nose"

Again, never do this. We have come a long way since the 1970s.

🐕🐕🐕 "when he does a wee on the carpet we rub his nose in it and shout at him."

🤦‍♀️ please, never do this either. This teaches the dog to fear us when we come in. Dogs have a 2 second window to learn after an action. If we come in 2 hours after they've eliminated and shout at them, they will just start to fear you coming home. This is when you begin to find the hidden turds in your shoes.
