Part 10: Hunting Benefits the Economy

Hunting is beneficial to the economy. Hunters frequently buy coolers and petrol for their vehicles. Visitors stay at resorts, hotels, and motels. At restaurants and bars, they eat and drink.

They purchase food, hunting gear, and fun souvenirs. Both large and small towns benefit financially from them. Hunting-related activities contribute significantly to the state's economy, several local economies, and a large number of enterprises.

The exchange of foreign currency is also beneficial to our economy.

500+ bears are legally harvested each year in Arkansas, which is remarkable because within the past century there were only around 50 bears inhabiting the entire state. It's a similar story across most of North America today, increased hunting opportunities in Missouri, Florida, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and out west in Idaho and more...

Conservation work does not always lead to an increase in hunting opportunities, especially in any timely manner, but we celebrate when it does because we love to hunt AND because a huntable population is a sustainable population.

"While animal rights activists generally hate the idea of black bear hunting, most biologists, wildlife managers, and researchers say it is one of the best ways to manage social tolerance of growing populations".

What are your thoughts on a comment we received? "Leave the bison alone, they were almost gone at one point, let's not do it again."

It's true. Back in 1492 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue estimates reach 30MIL bison that roamed North America 🤯 By 1900 reportedly less than 1,000 individuals remained. A tragic downfall! So should we support hunting them?

Emphatically we say YES. What saved the bison in the early 1900's was a group of conservationists (who also happened to be sportsmen 😉) who recognized the rapid decline and put a plan in place to help them recover.

With over 30,000 bison today (plains & wood), we are no longer in the dark ages of bison conservation! Humans willing to pay to eat and hunt bison have provided strong economic value in the past century making it easy for landowners to want bison flourishing on their land. So long as there are humans who care a great deal about seeing wildlife flourish, there will be a voice for those species when it comes to management decisions.

I'm proud to be a hunter, and proud to work for a more wildlife-rich future through conservation, education, and hunting.

As few as 25,000 bighorns remained in North America in 1950. Today, thanks to restoration efforts led by hunter-conservation organizations like SCI Foundation and our partners at the Wild Sheep Foundation, there are well over 80,000 across the continent’s mountain tops.
