HELP NEEDED PLACING KRABLOONIK DOGS. PLEASE SHARE.
There are currently nine dogs released from Krabloonik kennels in Snowmass, CO looking for homes. Many more to come. These horribly neglected dogs deserve the love and care good rescues and homes can provide. Can you help? PLEASE SHARE.
Aspen & Snowmass, Colorado, made headlines in 2013 when Dan MacEachen – owner of the largest commercial sled dog operation in the contiguous United States (Krabloonik) – was charged with eight counts of animal cruelty. However, this was not the first time that issues of cruelty and neglect were discovered at Krabloonik kennels. MacEachen pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges in 1988 for “viciously beating one of his dogs.”
In December of 2014, MacEachen sold Krabloonik kennels to a then- current employee, Dan Phillips – the Director of Operations since 2013. Phillips also worked as a musher/handler for MacEachen from November of 2001 to May of 2002.
Now, they are in the news again - and have begun to release dogs to rescue. There are currently 9 Krabloonik dogs at the Aspen Animal Shelter. At last official count there were 192 dogs in total at Krabloonik. These are dogs that live chained as a primary method of confinement. They will need a caring and patient foster or adopter to show them how to be a “real” dog and learn to live in the house. There are also a handful of excellent online support groups for adopters of industry sled dogs - many were involved in the Whistler rescue.
The Krabloonik Best Practices Review Committee was down to one remaining member this February after several resignations from the group, which was formed in 2015 to review and inspect Krabloonik Dog Sledding and report on whether the facility’s operators are following the best practices it committed to in its lease with the town.
The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office is awaiting approval on an arrest warrant for a former Krabloonik Dog Sledding musher after an investigation into an allegation of animal cruelty documented on video in late January.
The town of Snowmass Village also has received complaints about the facilities, records show, as has the Krabloonik Best Practices Review Committee.
