I have lived with cats.
I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me.

I am a sweet, social, older gal, looking for the perfect forever home!
I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.
I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.
I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

STATEN ISLAND CENTER

Roxy 135421
Care Center Location: Staten Island Animal Care Center
Zip Code: STATEN ISLAND NY 10312
Intake Type: Owner Surrender - Owner surrender due to owner can not afford vet care
Medical Behavior: 4. Orange
Age: 14 Years 1 Week (approx)
S*x: Female
Spayed/Neutered: Yes
Weight: 10

Hello, my name is Roxy. My animal id is #135421. I am a desexed female tortoiseshell cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 14 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/2/2022, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - cannot afford vet bill.

Roxy is on the emergency placement list due to medical and behavior reasons. She has chronic kidney disease and is geriatric and requires immediate care and further diagnostics at a veterinary hospital. Behaviorally, she is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She eats temptations while growling but is still not receptive to touch. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Roxy is placed on the emergency placement list for behavioral and medical concerns. Roxy has had a very difficult time adjusting to the care center exhibiting behaviors such as swatting, lunging and striking. Roxy is declawed though. She has been diagnosed with hyper thyroid and has a history of urinary tract infections. Roxy would be best pulled by a group that can provide an adult only home .

Let's get to know each other a bit more...
Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form.Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response.

Monty has always been an adorable mysterious boy, and he has mystified me yet again! 💜
Last week Monty went to the vet, and the results are in! The vet just called me and all I can do is happy cry over the news!
Monty no longer has kidney disease! He was literally in stage 2 of kidney disease but every single blood sample shows that he is now perfectly healthy!
The vet had to look three times to make sure it was actually Monty’s blood samples, and then she consulted other vets because this never happens; a cat cannot just heal it’s kidneys.
But Monty can! Monty can do anything! Monty is in fact a miracle!
So this means that Monty is perfectly healthy—healthy enough to actually be in the diabetes program they have at the hospital.
Still can’t believe it as I write this. I’m so confused and extremely happy and overwhelmed with happiness and relief.
My mysterious magical miracle Monty boy! 💜

We wish you a wonderful happy Monty Monday!
Big hugs and love from us,
Monty, Molly and Fenjah

*SHELTER PLEA* NEW PHOTO - *Now Level 2 Behavior!* Handsome 1 Year Old Tabby Boy SAMMY is a Playful and Curious Kitty.

Handsome 1 Year Old Tabby SAMMY Needs a Cat-Experienced Home. Sammy is an approximately 1 year and 6 month old, male, gray domestic short hair who was surrendered by his owner due to his behavior in the home. He lived in the home with his family for approximately 1 and a half years.

BEHAVIOR ASSESSMENT:

ENRICHMENT NOTES:

12/27/21
Standing in front of kennel, ears forward and face relaxed. He allows petting while leaning in, raising his tail and pausing occasionally to look around the room. Showed no concerning behaviors today - social and calm.

12/29/21
Standing in front of kennel, ears forward and tail raised. He reaches out towards me as I open the kennel door, then allows petting along his head and body while leaning in, making eye contact and keeping his tail high in the air. He remains calm when lifted out of his kennel and placed back down.

12/30/21
Meowing by the front for attention. He remains in place and greets with tail high. He warms up to petting, leaning in for cheek rubs. His tail remains up as he allows petting along the head and back. We played with a laser pointer, then he plays with a tower of tracks after. Offered a hiding spot for later and treats. Very playful boy.

1/4/22
Under the weather today. He accepts gentle pets and attention, then plays a little with the wand toy at the end.

1/5/22
Eating food by the back, but turns to look at me with soft eyes when approached. Sniffles during the interaction, but allows gentle pets with a slow approach. Will lean away when uncomfortable so I kept the interaction short and sweet and offered treats.

1/6/22
Resting on his cubby with a relaxed body posture. He perks up with sleepy eyes, stretches and comes to the front. He didn't enjoy petting today, shifting away, possibly because he is under the weather. I gave him some treats instead and he enjoyed them, then went back to sleep.

1/9/22
At front of kennel as the assessor approached, ears forward and face relaxed. He stands up to greet me as I open the kennel door, then allows petting along his head and body while leaning in, tail raised and beginning to wave back and forth. He is focused on movements and the room behind me but he does not escalate further. Looks like he's beginning to feel a bit better from his URI! Did well today.

1/11/22
Lying in cubby, ears forward and face relaxed. He steps out onto his perch when coaxed, then allows petting along his head and body while leaning in and raising his tail. He remains calm and appreciates all petting for the duration of our session. He eats all the treats offered as well. Sammy is showing consistent social behaviors in the shelter and can be removed from the socialization list at this time. Sammy is showing level 2 behaviors in our shelter, but due to his previous owner's behavior observations the feline behavior team recommends that Sammy still goes home with an experienced cat adopter who understands cat body language and the importance of physical and mental stimulation.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:

Level 2

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:

Sammy is a curious young cat who may get excited easily. He meows and approaches the front when seeing the assessor, following their movements around the room and seems interested in everything going on. He greets when the door opens and sniffs the assessor’s hand, and then accepts petting. He leans in for head rubs and lifts his rear when pet along his back, but his tail is pilo-erect and it sways excitedly from side to side. This is usually a sign of over-arousal so I was careful to go slow and rewarded him with treats with each stroke to build a positive association. He did not escalate during the interaction as long as I went slow.

Although Sammy has a scratch history and the potential to become overstimulated, Sammy has not shown any aggressive or offensive behavior here in our shelter. Sammy has also not escalated to biting or scratching even during extended sessions. Because of Sammy's consistent behavior here in sheltler, the behavior team believes Sammy can go to an adult only home with new adopters provided they are well counseled on the importance of routine feeding, play-time and overstimulation, as well as be open to potential behavior counseling in the future.
