In order for an x-ray apron to provide full protection from radiation, it must fit the technologist who is wearing it really well. Choosing the right x-ray apron is a vital part of protecting yourself and your staff. Here are a few key mistakes you can avoid when purchasing a protective apron to ensure that it is the best fit possible.

1. Different Manufacturers, Different Fits - As you've probably noticed while shopping for clothes, different clothing manufacturers make their products using different techniques and in different sizes. One company's shoes or jeans, for example, might be the right fit at a certain size, while another's might be too big or too small. The same goes for apron and protective apparel manufacturers: what is a "large" apron from one manufacturer, might be a "medium" from another. If you are making the switch from one protective apparel manufacturer to another, pay attention to manufacturer specifications of your apparel when placing an order.

2. Incorrect Measurements - Sometimes the problem with ill-fitting aprons is as simple as having the wrong measurements. Be sure to follow the sizing chart and measure the specified areas as they relate to the apron requirements. It's always a good idea to double check your measurements to make sure you're getting the right size x-ray apparel.

3. Under or Overestimating Your Size - People often order the clothing size that they want to be instead of the size they actually are. This can also be the case for aprons, too. Since safety is the most important factor for wearing protective apparel, make sure you stick to your current measurements to ensure that your protective apparel is the right fit. If your size changes, then you can think about wearing another size apron.

4. Getting a Tight Fitting Apron - When ordering an x-ray apron, allow a little bit of wiggle room so you have adequate room for moving, assisting in procedures and positioning patients. This will also leave space if you need to wear additional clothing layers underneath your apron in a colder environment.

There are a few key things to learn from these common mistakes. The first is to realize that each manufacturer will have different sizes available and that those sizes might differ from one manufacturer to the other. The second is to pay close attention to that manufacturer's sizing charts. Finally, make sure that your measurements are accurate and correspond with the requirements specified by the chart.

Having an apron that is the right size will ensure your safety and provide maximum protection from radiation. The Vet X-ray Store has teamed up with Techno-Aide who can manufacture whatever size and type of apron that you need for your facility. Lead aprons have been ubiquitous in the radiology field for decades. If you were to ask the average person on the street what material is used to protect clinicians against scatter radiation, the most common answer would undoubtedly be "Lead?" The question mark indicates uncertainty, but it also hints that there may be other, lesser known materials which offer scatter radiation protection when constructed within radiology apparel.
Lead is a great protection tool, but there are downsides. Cheap and plentiful, lead is the most economical solution to scatter radiation. But it's also very heavy. Many lead aprons weigh well over 10 pounds. This might not sound like much, but this can be a grueling weight to carry during long procedures, or for people with a smaller frame. The good news is that lead isn't the only option for scatter radiation protection. Even so, many people within the field of radiology don't seem to have gotten that memo.

Alternatives to Lead for Scatter Radiation
The weight of an old-fashioned lead apron can cause musculoskeletal problems when worn long term. Lead is also tricky to dispose of, and is toxic to the body if ingested. Non-lead alloys have been in use for many years now, and are common enough to be used in radiology accessories like lead aprons and thyroid collars without being prohibitively expensive.

LMG - Lead was the go-to for scatter radiation because 1) it worked, and 2) you could dig it out of the ground. Today, manufacturers like Techno- Aide utilize other alloys with the same protective properties as lead. The example we offer is LMG Media.

LMG Media is a proprietary blend of Antimony and Tungsten. These two elements protect against radiation at the precise wavelengths produced by radiologic imaging procedures. They excel this way, while being much lighter than lead. What's more, our LMG can be recycled or even incinerated! That's because there are no toxic heavy metals incorporated into it. Techno-Aide has been selling LMG radiology accessories and apparel for ten years. Though it is more expensive to produce aprons of this variety than their traditional lead counterparts, the weight and environmental differences are worth it to many of our customers.

Light Weight Lead - Lead is lead, but there is wiggle room regarding how much of it must be present within a standard piece of protective radiology apparel. We include .5mm of lead in all standard products, like our lead aprons and thyroid collars. We sometimes make these same products with .375mm of lead instead, for customers who want a little less weight. This is still well within most regulatory limits, and performs at the highest levels of quality in testing.

Sometimes you don't know how a garment feels until you've worn it for many hours. If you feel weighed down by the lead aprons in your arsenal, try one of the Vet Xray Store's lighter alternatives. If you manage inventory that is used by many people, ask them how they feel about the weight of lead. The Vet X-ray Store can help your department take a load off, while still providing the vital radiation protection you depend upon. Visit us today to replace your heavy apron. www.vetxraystore.com

Hand Guards and Palm Guards - Let's start with the absolute most protection you can find for your hands. Hand guards are great shielding devices for situations where you'll have your hand in direct contact with the radiation beam. Palm Guards cover the entire hand with an optional slit to allow for more dexterity during procedures. The Hand-Guard 5-Finger Glove offers the same heavy-duty radiation protection plus a fair amount of individual finger mobility.

Don’t assume however that these gloves will last forever. In fact, you have to make sure that they are actually providing you the right amount of protection all the time. It is a good idea to image these gloves at least two times a year to check for cracks. A visual inspection alone is not good enough to ensure lead integrity.

The x-ray image on the right clearly indicates that the gloves are unsafe. There should be no dark areas seen at all as the dark areas are indication of no lead protection! How old are your gloves that you are using now and are they safe? Perhaps its time to buy some new ones. Visit www.vetxraystore.com to learn more.

Protective radiation apparel can last a long time, provided that you take good care of it and store it properly. There are a few things you can do to ensure that you get the most mileage out of your x-ray aprons. Following the proper steps will also make sure that all of your apparel is as clean and sanitary as possible. So, let's take a look at the Do's and Don'ts of protective radiation apparel maintenance.

Do:
Clean your apron regularly - Use a very soft toothbrush and a mild detergent, like dishwashing soap. If you have dirty or grimy x-ray aprons, try using 409 spray to remove it. You can also disinfect your garment with alcohol free wipes like our Sani Cloth AF.

Store your apron on a hanger - Store your apron like you would your favorite coat. After all, it's an investment you want to protect. More than that, it's your best friend when you're working around radiation. Make a habit of placing the apron on a hanger or rack as soon as you take it off.

Regularly inspect your apron - Inspect your apron for cracks or breaks in the surface. Keep an eye out for frayed ends and look over the seams to be sure the safety of the apron isn't compromised. As soon as you start to see cracks, breaks or frayed edges, it's time to get a new protective apron. You can easily track your quality control with ApronHub. A free cloud based program offered by Techno-Aide. Inc. that is easy to use.

Don't:
Use harsh detergents - Harsh chemicals can damage the surface and lead to a short lifespan for x-ray aprons. As tempted as you might be to sanitize an apron in the same manner as other radiology accessories, always keep in mind that harsh chemicals will deteriorate the fabric of your protective apparel and dry out the material.

Launder the apron - Never place in apron in a washing machine. This will lead to a damaged apron that might be unusable. Instead, always use a soft brush or even a damp cloth to clean.

Immerse in water - Following up on the last point, it's imperative that you don't put running water over an apron or let it soak in water. A damp cloth will be adequate in terms of cleaning.

Leave your apron folded on a chair - Whenever you leave an apron lying around in a folded position, you encourage cracks, which, as we've discussed, will leave you with a protective apron that needs to be replaced.

Follow these steps and your apron will have a long life. Proper protective radiation apparel maintenance will keep you safe and give your protective apparel longevity. For all of your x-ray apparel and radiology accessories, come check out all that the Vet Xray Store has to offer.

The Vet X-Ray Store has several options for storing your aprons and gloves. Our racks will accommodate one to ten garments.
