Porter, the Wonder Dog

It has been over three years since Porter was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He has done very well but recently he has begun to show his age and other health issues have cropped up. Today was a particularly rough day for him so a trip to the vet was required. As usual he got exceptional care at TBVH and is now home feeling much better. Thanks Maureen and Dr Audet.

Poor little Porter has had a very rough week. He started feeling unwell on Sunday while we were traveling. Turns out he has lung infection. Very scary to see him fighting to breath. Porter has been to the vets three times and I have spoken to the on call vet once when Porter was struggling to breath at 2 in the morning. He is on antibiotics and a medication to reduce the fluid in his lungs. Thankfully Porter appears to have turned a corner and is much improved today. I can’t thank the vets and staff at Thunder Bay Veterinary Hospital enough for their excellent care and support. Special thanks to vet tech Maureen Page, who Porter seems to think is his private vet tech.

Porter went to the vet today for his regular chemo treatment. For the first time in a year and a half I could take him inside. This seemed to confuse him.

Since Porter was diagnosed with bladder cancer almost one year ago, I have tried to continue to provide him with a good quality of life including continuing to set training goals. About one month ago he earned his Advanced Trick Dog title and yesterday he earned his Novice Trick Dog Masters title which involves completing 30 tricks at the novice level. Proud of this tiny dog who continues to love training at 11 years old.

Porter loves his massages!

No matter the size of the dog, mobility matters. At only 3.5 lbs, Porter is the smallest of the dogs I massage, and yes, trigger points can be found and resolved even on a dog this small - it just requires fingertip sensitivity and precision. This little guy makes up for his size with a huge attitude - it's one of the many, many things I love about him.
