Losing a pet is heartbreaking, and words can either comfort or unintentionally cause more pain. When supporting a grieving pet parent, avoid these common but hurtful phrases:

1️⃣ “It’s just a dog/cat. You shouldn’t be this emotional over it dying.”
Their pet was family, and grief isn’t measured by species.

2️⃣ “You should get another one, it will help with the pain.”
Love isn’t replaceable, and suggesting a new pet minimizes their bond.

3️⃣ “You should have put that sick thing to sleep a long time ago. What were you thinking?”
End-of-life decisions are deeply personal and never easy.

4️⃣ “Don’t feel guilty.”
Grief is complex, and invalidating emotions won’t make them disappear.

5️⃣ “Other people have much bigger things they are dealing with. Your cat dying isn’t big.”
Pain isn’t a competition—losing a pet is a profound loss.

Instead of trying to fix their grief, simply be present and acknowledge their loss. A heartfelt “I’m so sorry” can mean everything. 💜

If it does, I won't be watching that movie, for sure. For darn sure!
