For First Time Coursers & Handlers

WHAT Is Fast CAT? - Fast CAT stands for Fast Coursing Ability Test. Dogs chase a lure in a straight line 100-yard dash, and the dog's time is converted to give their average speed for the run in miles per hour. WHAT ARE PRE-ENTRIES? - Pre-Entries are entries made before the closing date.
Please Note: If your entry is mailed before the closing date yet due to the failure of the postal service it is not received in time for the Event Secretary to have it at the Event, then you will have to fill out a day of entry form through the JotForm link on the day of the test.
WHAT ARE ‘DAY OF’ ENTRIES? - Entries accepted after the closing date or and up until the day of event are considered Day of Entries. The deadline for Pre-entries is typically ten days before the event. ‘Day Of’ entries usually cost more than pre-entries. Please Note: Be aware that there may be a long delay before ‘Day Of’ entrants can run, all pre-registered dogs run at a scheduled time slot. ‘Day Of’ entries must be done online through the JotForm link, no paper entries will be processed.
WHAT IS AN INSPECTION? - Dogs will be inspected by a designated inspection committee consisting of at least two people who are members of the hosting Club. The members shall inspect each entered dog for lameness, fitness to compete and female estrus (in season), before each test run.
Please Note: Inspection shall take place prior to any form of wrapping being applied to the dog. In the opinion of the Inspection Committee, any entrant found to be lame, unfit to compete or in season shall not be allowed to test and the applicable entry fees shall be refunded.
INSPECTION: Must take place before each test that the dog is entered in. (If you are entered in both tests on one day, then the dog is inspected twice).
WHAT IS ROLL CALL? - The time, prior to the commencement of running, by which you are supposed to have your dog ready for inspection by the Inspection Committee. At roll call the dog is examined for lameness or in season. Both spayed and unsprayed bi***es are examined to see if they show any evidence of being in season.
WHAT IS A BLOCK SCHEDULE? - This is a scheduled block of time that is divided into one-hour time blocks with concurrent tests. For example, 9 AM to 10AM, dogs in that group should be at the check in table no earlier than 8:45 AM and no later than 9:30 AM to run in that time block. These events will run CONCURRENTLY using a BLOCK schedule. A time block will be assigned, we will do our best to accommodate requests, but preferred time blocks are not guaranteed. An email explaining the process will be sent out prior to the test. If all blocks fill, more time slots may be added to accommodate additional entries. Workers/volunteers may be accepted for roll call and inspection at 7:30 AM (30 minutes before the first scheduled block).
WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS? This is a rain or shine event. Please plan accordingly.

TIPS FOR HANDLERS
• The field is fenced. However, it is strongly recommended that prior to running your dog, you have good “recall” control over your dog, as the dog will be off leash.
• Handlers should wear comfortable shoes and be physically able to hold and release their dogs, as well as catch them.
• Dogs will be brought to the start line on leash and released only upon a verbal signal (“Tally-Ho!) from the Hunt Master. Dogs may be released by hand, folded leash or using a traditional lure coursing slip lead.
• Handler should have someone familiar with the dog at the end of the course to retrieve the dog or have someone else release their dog at the start line. The handler is expected to promptly secure the dog and leave the field with the dog on leash.

GENERAL ENTRY INFORMATION
This event is open to all dogs at least one year of age by the day of the event. Dogs must be individually registered with the American Kennel Club, recorded in the FSS program, dogs with PAL numbers, and dogs enrolled in the AKC Canine Partners program are eligible. Dogs with breed disqualifications and monorchid/cryptorchid dogs are eligible to participate. If your mix breed dog needs an AKC Canine Partner number a form and information is available at https:// www.akc.org/register/information/purebred-alternative-listing-pal/ Mixed breeds MUST be spayed or neutered to be
eligible to run.
Mixed breed dogs that have been listed with the AKC Canine Partners may participate provided their listing number has been recorded on the entry form. Breed should be marked as “All American Dog”. All American dogs without a Canine Partner number MAY register for the AKC Canine Partner program at the field and run for qualifying points.
A dog may enter only one time per test. Each test has an individual event number. There are two test/events each day. Events are run CONCURRENTLY - meaning the option to run both events in the same time block is allowed.

Refunds!
You may pull out of the test prior to closing date/time for a refund. There will be no refund after closing date for any reason, except for injury to the dog or for a bitch in season.

Check-in is followed by inspection for fitness, lameness, and “in season” bi***es. At inspection, all dogs will be examined for disqualifications. Bi***es known to be in season are not to be brought to the test. At inspection, bi***es in season, lame and unfit dogs will be excused with entry fee refunded. DOGS MUST BE INSPECTED BEFORE EACH RUN.

TEST HOURS: Concurrent trials, start at 9:00 AM until 5:00 pm Friday-Saturday. 9:00 am - 3 pm Sunday
Fast CAT will be divided into one-hour time blocks with concurrent tests. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but preferred time blocks are not guaranteed. If all blocks fill, more time slots may be added to accommodate additional entries. Workers/volunteers may run their dogs prior to the first morning block, or their dogs may be added in during the day.

FOR THESE EVENTS WE WILL BE HOLDING A “ROLLING ROLL CALL” **

Inspection begins 10 minutes before your scheduled Time Block. We inspect the dogs as they arrive at the field. You will receive a Run Ticket when you arrive at the field. Take your Run Ticket to the Roll Call area. Dogs must be checked in and inspected prior to EACH run. Inspection will check for general fitness and for females in season. Females in season and lame dogs are not permitted to run. Handicaps will be verified at inspection.
Once your dog has passed inspection, bring your Run Ticket to the Paddock Master Table. You will then be put in the run order. If you have a catcher or a releaser, make sure they are in the correct area at LEAST three dogs ahead. This really helps to keep things moving!
If you have a 2nd run in the same Time Block you must come back and pick up your Run 2 ticket, be re-inspected and be put on the run order list. If you have a 2nd run in another Time Block – please come back then.

Time
The Fast CAT is a timed straight race of 100 yards where a dog chases a lure. Dogs are run singularly and earn points based on their handicapped speed. The dog’s time to complete the 100-yard dash is converted in MPH using the following formula.
MPH = 204.545 / (dog’s time).
A handicap system is applied to a dog’s MPH to determine the number of points earned. Points
= MPH x dog’s handicap. The handicap is based on the height of the dog at it’s withers:
• 18” or greater = handicap is 1.0
• 12” up to less than 18” = handicap is 1.5
• Below 12” = handicap is 2.0 204.545/time = MPH
For example: The dog’s time is 8.14 seconds 204.545/8.14 = 25.13 MPH
Prizes
A flat light blue ribbon for a passing qualifying run.
Rosettes for completing titles BCAT, DCAT or FCAT, as available.
Please notify the Trial Secretary in advance if you anticipate completing a title by writing in on the bottom of the entry form.

Titles/Awards
Titles are earned by accumulating points.
● BCAT = 150 points ● FCAT = 1,000 points
● DCAT = 500 points ● FCAT # is every additional 500 points
(i.e. FCAT2 = 1,500 points, FCAT3 = 2,000, FCAT4 =2,500)

*According to AKC Rules:
Handlers are not permitted to run with a dog during an official run. Handlers are not to entice the dog through the course with anything other than the lure during its official run. No mechanical devices including whistles, horns, bull horns, etc, No toys including the waving of objects to lure the dog to the finish line. You MAY CHEER and use the dog’s name.

EQUIPMENT and CREW
LURE EQUIPMENT: Jaxon Kennel Club runs all their Fast CATs utilizing a continuous loop system, Jaxon Kennel Club uses and endorses the SwiftPaws system for their record in safety and reliability. The lure or “bunny” consist of white plastic bags. Additionally, a squawker is sometimes used - if track conditions allow. The lure is attached to string that is set in a continuous loop and the string is pulled/pushed by an
electric motor (SwiftPAWS).

TIMING DEVICES: Jaxon Kennel Club uses and endorses Farm Tek electronic timing devices. At most events we have a redundancy system set up to help reduce timing issues and reruns.

FIELD CONDITIONS: The field is fairly level. The surface is grass that is mowed short. The track is approximately 460’ or 153 yards long and is fully fenced with mesh fencing. Mounted entry and exit gates are also part of the track. The second handler must walk to the catch area BEFORE the dog is released.

HUNT MASTERS: The Hunt Masters are not just someone standing at the start line twirling their arm. They are an integral part of the overall safety of the dog and human. They are in complete charge of all hounds and handlers on the field. They are responsible for calling the next dog/handler onto the course. They are responsible for making sure the correct dog is on the start line. They are responsible for checking collars. The Hunt Master explains the release and, if necessary, the retrieval before the dog is released. They are responsible for making sure the lure is in position and traveling in the correct direction before calling the dog/handler onto the course. The handler should communicate to the Hunt Master any special needs the dog may have fast, slow, old, new, etc). The Hunt Master will communicate any needs to the Lure Operator. The Hunt Master shall question the Lure Operator, Timer and Handlers asking “Are you ready?” After affirmative answers from all parties, the Hunt Masters will begin the course. They provide a hand signal to the Lure Operator to start the lure. They give the verbal signal “Tallyho” to release the dog from a standing start. The dog should not be slipped before the sound of the “T” in “Tallyho”. The Hunt Master will notify the Lure Operator, Timer and Handler of any issue with the release or the course that results in a rerun or non-qualifying score. The Hunt Master shall stop the lure in the event of a safety issue with the course or the dog.

LURE OPERATOR: The Lure Operators are responsible for communicating to the Trail Chair, any concerns regarding the track layout. They are responsible for operating the lure in a safe manner for all breeds. The Lure Operator will make a test run beforehand. The Lure Operator will receive communication from the Hunt Master regarding any special needs a particular dog may have (fast, slow, old new, etc). The Lure Operators will do all they can to get the best time for your dog. The Lure Operator will not move the lure at the end until the dog is leashed and off the course. For the utmost safety, the Lure Operator will position themselves so that they have a view of the entire course and will watch the dog the entire way until the dog is leashed and off the course. The Lure Operator will stop the lure on a signal from the Hunt Master, but shall automatically stop the lure any time a dog becomes entangled in the string or when a potentially dangerous situation may develop.

QUEING UP: After dogs have been roll called and put in a run order, we will line them up about 6 at a time. Anyone that does not have a Catcher or a Releaser in place and ready to go, could be moved back in the order. Dogs not present for their Time Block will be added to the next available Time Block- with the exception of conflicts. Conflicts will be handled on a case-by-case basis at the field. We strive to keep the tracking running smoothly with as few delays as possible. For more information see the section on Time Blocks.

SAFETY
Safety is the focus of the Jaxon Kennel Club. We work with the host club to ensure the safety of the course. We pride ourselves on the conduct of the crew to help maintain an atmosphere of
helpfulness, fun and friendship. All while helping to ensure both human and dog are as safe as possible. We make sure regulations are followed to make the event not only safe, but fair. We run a test dog prior to the start of the event and each time we have to change Lure operators.
Prior to moving the lure to position for the start, the lure operator will announce “hold your dogs” to caution owners, and the Hunt Master will caution handlers to be careful
of the line.
NOTE: If you have a hard to hold dog, please bring someone familiar with your dog to help you. There have been too many volunteer releasers injured by dogs that
are too strong, unruly, reactive or out of control. (Big or Small).
Only authorized personnel will be permitted near the lure operators tent.

Collar Rules: Dogs may run without a collar or wear any type of collar except choker collars, electronic training collars or head collar. You MAY bring your dogs to the line in a choke, head
halter, limited slip or harness, but they MUST be removed in order to run. Collars should be snug.

Tags: Hanging tags pose a safety concern and it is suggested that tags be secured to the collar with tape. Dogs may run muzzled if desired. Clips or rubber bands may be used to keep long hair from falling across the dog’s field of vision.
FIELD CONDITIONS
• The track is fairly flat and mowed short.
• Fast CAT Track will be fully fenced with mesh fencing
• Gates at the entrance and exit

How a dog person knows she is rich:

I am rich. I have $15 in my checking account and a stunning dog(or more) on my couch.

I am rich. I have a car that mostly works and enough gas to get to the dog shows this weekend.

I am rich. I have boxes of pasta and generic sauce in my pantry and enough dog food to last the zombie apocalypse.

I am rich. I have enough old coats and sweaters to layer up and stay warm while I scoop pooop.

I am rich. I vacation by camping with my dogs and going to cheer on my dog friends at shows. Sometimes I even play too, and spend $1000 to bring home a fifty cent ribbon that I will treasure more than a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower.

I am rich. I have tools: duct tape and crazy glue and the know how to fix just about anything with these tools.

I am rich. I find joy in making my own things, making do, and making right. I have a 20 year old grooming table, a 60+ year old body, and the wonder and joy of a 6 year old child learning that a dog can give her wings.

I am rich.

My wealth is not measured in dollar signs but in dog barks and kisses. My riches aren't spent on electronics and fancy clothes but are shared with my human and four footed friends.

Come play with us that weekend and ENJOY yourself!
