Lacy won't sleep in the coop right now because we had a visitor kill her sister Sunday night. She slept on the porch right at the front door. So momma had to kill the visitor at 2 am. ( see in comments). Lacy is 3 and weight, under a pound. She is the result of my own mixing of breeds. I call them barnyard mutts. I love blending different breeds. They can produce some interesting offspring. Lacy's father is Charlie Boy, a True Blue Old English Game bird Bantam. Her mother is Lily, my white bearded Silkie. They are both 5. A Bantam is miniature chicken, meaning their breed also comes in Full size. Silkies, although they come in different sizes (hens are almost 1/2 the size of roosters), they are not considered Bantans. Silkies were brought to America as an exotic pet from Indonesia ( I believe) by Polo in the 1800's. They were used in freak shows too. They have 5 toes unlike the regular 4, black skin and grey flesh. In Asian cultures they are considered a gourmet food. Lacy inherited those traits. Silkies also have fluffy, Persian cat like feathers, so that combo makes Lacy extra soft.
Lacy is the momma to PeeWee. She has a daughter that is iridescent black and even smaller than her. I have not named her. She just laid her first egg.
I plan on using my incubator this Spring and pick out the smallest eggs I have to hatch them. Peewee was the smallest egg to hatch on the farm. Silkies have the sweetest disposition and so far, the offspring are just as sweet.
Looking forward to the new much more secured coop to be delivered. I did shoot a big hole in the bottom of the old. It was an awkward shot, but I did it. Hated to but at least his death was not as brutal as what he did to my other girl.
I fed them both to the fish and turtles.
