Japan Cat Network International is a registered NPO that helps people help pets.

We provide advice, support, materials and other information so that people can assist animals in need within their own community. JCN has helped to start hundreds of trap-neuter and return / rescue efforts throughout Japan. JCN runs two small no-kill shelters; one of which serves as a rescue base in response to the Tohoku disaster. We are committed to educating the public on the benefits of spay-n

euter and we strongly support the no-kill movement. JCN has been featured internationally and on Animal Planet’s Must Love Cats program. Dozens of articles and reports have been produced about JCN’s efforts. For more information, please visit our Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/japancatnetwork/) and our website (http://japancatnetwork.org). We are in constant need of pet supplies, monetary assistance, volunteers and fostering/adoptive homes. If you would like to help, or if you would like to start a TNR program, please contact us at [email protected].

Are you traveling with a furry feline family member? Or perhaps you're delivering a kitty to a new forever or foster home. Here are our top 3 tips on how to travel safely.

1. If you are going with your furball, add a used pillowcase or shirt that smells like you to the carrier. If kitty is going to a new home, use one of their beds or towels. This familiar smell will help to keep kitty calm(er) during travel. A calm kitty is a quiet kitty.

2. Never EVER open the carrier unless in an enclosed space. Use a family restroom at a train station, airport or rest area. Roll up the windows and close the doors if in the car and you need to let kitty out or swap carriers. Mid travel on a plane or train? This admin has taken a kitty into the bathroom of both to swap out a soiled p*e pad for a fresh one. The last thing you want is a scared kitty escaping in an unfamiliar place.

3. Flying? Place a harness on kitty, or place the kitty in a mesh laundry bag (while in that enclosed space) so that they can safely be removed from the carrier as you go through security. As above, new spaces + escaped kitty do NOT equate to a good situation.

BONUS- If catching a stray cat and you don't have a carrier don't fret! A pillowcase or mesh laundry bag works too. You can even MacGyver a carrier out of two baskets and zip ties. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Do you have any tips or tricks for safety while traveling with your fav-fur-ite feline friend?

Hello, everyone! We don't want to rush into excitement but we are looking for locations to make a JCN Tokyo cat shelter.

This will help us greatly in our cause, and we will be able to help many more cats if this were to happen! We are looking in areas near our vets, so Gotokuji or Shinkoenji. This would be the ideal situation, but of course it has to be within a certain budget as we are a non-profit organization.

The second best scenario would be a storage location, as we have many supplies from when we had the Tokyo shelter before. These are important (and expensive) supplies that are needed by staff and fosters, so we would like to not have to get rid of them, but the truth is, we have no space.

What we need help with is finding an affordable location to either build a shelter, or an affordable unit/place we can use to store our shelter supplies. Do you know of any, or anyone that is able to help out? We would love that if you do, you would reach out. This is a very important step for our organization, so we are reaching out to the community.

If you can help us out, or know anyone that can, please reach out! You can message us or leave a comment here and we will get back to you!

And if you would like to donate to make this a possibility, as well as help us continue to help cats and kittens across Japan, please click on the link below!

Everyone, meet today's feature, Gojo!

He is my (the JCN volunteer writing this) favorite kind of cat, a black cat 🐈‍⬛️ and if you met this cat, he would be your favorite cat, too. Gojo is in desperate need of our help. Unfortunately he was returned from a prospective home, and he did not come back as his “usual self.” He was a little shy before, but now his heart is a bit broken, and he seems to be more timid than before. On top of that, he has become more stressed from the changing group at the shelter, and he needs a break. This community has helped us find homes for a trio (momma Ni-chan and her 2 babies), a duo (Mojo and Jojo), along with many others in desperate situations. This time, we need help for Gojo.

Gojo needs a home where he can be a single cat. He needs time and patience because he has become very reserved. He still allows pets, but will probably shy and hide away, but once he gains trust he will go belly up for that right person who we know is out there and will bring back the Gojo we all at JCN knew.

As a 3 black cat owner, I can testify that black cats are as loyal as they are smart. They are your shadow. Gojo is no different. And his fur is sooo soft and shiny. AND he's a meaty guy! That means that once he knows he's safe and allowed to open up, he will be a great cuddle partner.

I am asking the community to share the heck out of this post because it breaks my heart that a black cat was returned and his personality diminished because of it. We know the right person is out there. Help us find Gojo a true home 🐈‍⬛️🖤

I know you want to adopt Gojo, so head over to our website and apply!

These are Miki and Yoda. They were rescued a few months ago from different, but desperate situations. They are currently with our foster Louise, and goodness, can you see the difference from when we rescued them to now? Louise has magical healing hands, but it’s not just her who is dedicating so much to these cats; Miki and Yoda have sponsors!

We definitely are so lucky that someone saw Miki and Yoda and said “I want to help this cat have a better life.” We are very grateful for the sponsors that help with Miki’s and Yoda’s care, where they don't only help with vet costs, but also supplies, which you can see Miki and Yoda happily showing off. Sponsors are great for shelters and organizations like us. By Sponsoring a cat you can:

Directly impact their care: Your sponsorship helps cover their food, medical bills, and other essential needs.

Give them a better chance at adoption: Sponsorship can make them more appealing to potential adopters by highlighting their well-being.

Reduce stress and overcrowding: By supporting their care, you help alleviate the burden on shelters, making room for more animals in need.

Feel good about giving back: Knowing you're providing a lifeline to a vulnerable animal can be incredibly rewarding.

Sponsoring a cat is a rewarding way to support their care and increase their chances at finding a furrever home! We are SO thankful to the anonymous sponsors that help us take care of Miki and Yoda. Without them, we really don’t want to imagine where and how they would be right now.

And last but not least, a huge thank you to our monthly donors. These folk also play an amazing role in JCN. Their regular contributions provide the income that helps us take care of our shelter cats and kittens. These funds help us plan our budget and we can make better use of our resources.

If you would like to consider becoming a monthly donor, check out the link below. If you have an interest or questions about sponsoring, reach out to us!

JCN asks that all rehoming posts follow our guidelines of a home check and adoption fee. Both of these requirements are for the safety of the animals. A contract, while not required, is a great thing to have as well.

Recently a post on a FB Mottanai group was seen. In it, OP lamented their poor rehoming decision. There had been little interest in the 3 pairs of love birds that needed rehoming and so went with the first interested party. Please always be aware of red flags when rehoming.
1. The man was told his car was too small for the bird's cage and brought that car nonetheless.
2. The legs of the bird cage, their home, were then cut off in an effort to make it fit. It still did not and he planned to break the cage.
3. The man was not respectful of OP in actions nor in words.

Sadly, in all this one bird flew off. OP felt as if they could not change their mind as they had already promised the birds to the man. Just because you agreed to give someone something, especially something living, you are not obligated to follow through if the situation does not feel safe.

Now the OP is worried about the birds and begs the man to "JUST TAKE CARE OF THE BIRDS."

Our hearts ache for OP, but we hope that you can avoid that heartache. Trust your gut. It's okay to say that you changed your mind. Also, ask for help or guidance if you need it.

Check out our rehoming guidelines below for more information:

Hello, everyone! We have a great story along with a great update!

Last week we reached out for help on behalf of a community member in Kyushu. They had found 6 kittens and a momma that were going to be removed from where they were and euthanized. We gave them the contact information for a rescue group in the area, Catnip. On August 8th, they were able to trap the momma and all but one kitten. Thankfully they were able to go back and the remaining kitten was trapped quickly.

We are very grateful for organizations like Catnip. There aren’t many reputable shelters in Japan, and we were worried they wouldn’t be able to help, but they quickly stepped up and helped when we weren’t able to go there and help. The momma and kittens were starving and in a dangerous place, and are now in their shelter eating and safe.

Catnip is a great resource in this area, and needs support. Like us, they depend on the community to rescue and provide care for the cats and kittens in the area. Check them out, and if you are in the area, keep them in mind in case you or anyone is ever interested in adopting, fostering, or volunteering.

Hello everyone! We want to use this to rally our community. Every time we ask for help you guys really step up and we couldn’t be more grateful for each and every one of you. We are in the middle of summer break and still in full kitten season mode. With volunteers and general help taking time off for the summer holidays, our resources are as tight as ever.

Whether you have followed us a while or you just got here, we all have something in common. We love cats and we want as many cats as possible to be happy. We help the cat community in many ways and despite our circumstances, we will continue to do so, however, there is only so much we can do, and we really hate to turn cases away because of a lack of funds. If you have ever asked yourself “what can I do?” Donating to organizations like ours is one of the things you can do! Donations allow us to do many things, and the more funds we have, the less cases we can turn away.

If there is ever a chance where you are in a place where you can reach out and help, please think of us and our work. For now, please read the benefits of donating to cat shelters like ours. Organizations like ours are few and far between in Japan, and we try to help people and cats not only in Kyoto and Kansai, but nationwide. Please consider being a part of our efforts to make Japan a better place for cats.

Hello everyone! Today’s comes with a great and long-awaited update!

Momma Ni-chan and her 2 babies, Momo-chan and Coco-chan found their forever home! They have been in their new home since last month. Their new guardian gives them plenty of space and the patience they have with these 3 has been working miracles. They are fully adapted to their new home and have all gained some weight! They started off by having their hiding spots, but are to the point where they have all started to play with their new guardian, with Momo-chan and Coco-chan being the more playful and adventurous ones. We are all hoping momma Ni-chan will follow, at her own pace, of course!

We are very happy knowing that the community came together to help find them their new forever home and most importantly, we are SO happy to finally be giving this update about these 3 girls. For those that don’t know, Momma Ni-chan and her 2 babies were rescued by a very kind lady. Unfortunately, she had cancer and had to give them up before going into hospice. After being with a foster for 2 years, they needed to find a new home where they could be together ASAP.

Their rescuer and first guardian can be happy knowing that their girls are finally in a safe, loving, and patient home TOGETHER!

If you would like to give cats like these their forever home, you can start by meeting our cats! If you would like to give any of our long-term residents their forever home, you can apply from the link below

Maura and Joe’s fostering experience:

We are fostering Salt and Pepper (we are calling them Nanae and Ōmi, because one is cow colored, and the other is jet black like the cow Ōmi beef comes from!)

But okay, Salt/Nanae and Pepper/Ōmi are sisters, and were found as kittens. They weren't well socialized to people, so Justine and her partner, their first fosters, had a lot of work to do! Maura and I took them in about two weeks ago, and they've gone from shy, spicy kittens to being very comfortable around us and our cats.

Nanae has become a lap cat who enjoys being near her person of choice. Her favorite activities are laying in the sun out on the porch and coming back into the AC to climb into my lap.

Ōmi went from being a shy shadow to being very interested in watching our every move from a perch. Her favorite time of day is bed time, where she jumps up onto the comforter and meows cutely asking for pets. She has become great friends with our cat Uzaki.

After our loss of a kitten we tried to rescue on our own, we resolved to help other cats in need in her memory.

Fostering the girls has been a delight! It has been so heartwarming to watch them go from hissy babies to confident young cats with distinct personalities and habits. Both of them spend their days lounging on the patio with Uzaki, then spend their evenings zooming and playing with us (they both love bird wands). Then they tuck into bed with us at 9:30, like clockwork.

Fostering has been a great experience. Starting out can be a little challenging, because you have to give the kittens time to get used to the new space, new people, resident cats... But being able to watch the kittens come out of their shell little by little is so gratifying and rewarding. It's very gratifying to know that our kindness and efforts to get these kittens to trust humans is going to make a huge difference for their adoption potential.

We hope our story inspires many people to foster cats and kittens. This is a great way to help shelters and many other cats. If you would like to foster, please apply from the link below. If you are in the Kansai area, you can also meet the cats and kittens by reserving the cat cafe. We hope to meet you and help you find your purrfect pawrtner.

Are you about to head out on your summer vacation? Planning for the perfect trip can be stressful, add your beloved cat...
07/08/2024

Are you about to head out on your summer vacation? Planning for the perfect trip can be stressful, add your beloved cat to the equation, and it may be a bit overwhelming. While every cat reacts to this sort of temporary change quite differently, here is a list to make sure you will have peace of mind when you leave for your getaway and your cat will be as comfortable as possible!

Arrange at home care. Most adult cats are fine being left home alone for up to 24hrs, given food, water, and a clean litter box are left for that time. However, it can be nerve-wracking for a cat if it’s their first time being left alone for so long. Some cats have separation anxiety, which is more common with cats that were raised during the quarantine days of the pandemic. Because of this, it’s important to arrange for someone to come in and check on them. If you will be gone for a few days, it would be better to have someone stay with them to ease any feelings of anxiety both of you may have!

Clean up before you head out. Make sure your home is a safe space for your cat while you’re away. Put away shopping bags, unplug small appliances, and put away any breakable items. Ensure all windows are securely closed and that the only food left out is the cat’s food. Also, make sure they won’t get stuck anywhere by securing doors that may close the cat inside a room.

Be strategic with food and water. Leave more than enough food for your cat, and move it away from the water in case it gets knocked over. Leaving 2 feeding spots is a good idea, in case something happens to one bowl, your companion will still have a secondary feeding station. If your cat is an overeater, getting an automatic pet feeder will be a great solution. You can schedule feeding times to be the same as if you were still at home, providing your cat with their routine. A water fountain would also be a great investment, as you can ensure your cat will have fresh flowing water throughout your absence.

Give your cat entertainment. Do you know how we encourage adopting in pairs? This situation is a great example. With a buddy, your cats will keep each other safe and happy, as they will have someone to interact with when you are gone. Make sure your cat has access to cat furniture and scratchers, as well as toys that are safe to play with without any supervision. If your cat loves bird watching, leave a curtain or two open so that they can still see the birds from their windows.

Setting up a pet camera. This is great to give you peace of mind because no matter how well we prepare, we will be worried anyway. We recommend pointing the camera towards their feeding station, not only does this ensure you will see them, but you will be able to make sure they are eating regularly and that they don’t run out of food or water.

Litterbox. Make sure it is clean before leaving, and if you have multiple cats, set up an extra box. This will help the boxes not get full too quickly. This is another reason why you may want to consider having someone come in to check on them or stay with them.

We usually get messages of people offering their petsitting services. These are usually tourists who would love to exchange pet care for a place to stay in a given timeframe. We suggest you visit the Housesitting and petsitting Japan page if you would like to meet someone who can take care of your kitty-cat. Make sure to get to know them and if they are able to meet your cat’s needs.

Do you have any tips or advice for leaving your pet while you go on vacation? Drop a comment and share what you do in this situation to make sure your kitty is happy!

Hello, everyone. We are a bit over our heads right now and in need of a bit of help ourselves. We are looking for potential kitten adopter/foster and sponsor for arranging a spay for a momma cat.

Someone reached out about this cat and her kittens in an area where we've done TNR before. We are reaching out to see if anyone can help by sponsoring Nekokaramesen trapping costs, as well as kitten intake costs.

We are really over our shelter limit now and cannot take any of them in. However, we can ensure that costs are covered, we can start reaching out for emergency fosters in the Kansai area.

If you would like to sponsor, please get in touch with us. If you would like to make a donation, no matter how small, you can do so from the link below, and this will ensure the tnr costs of these, and other cats and kittens are covered.
Also, please share. We receive so much more support from people when our posts reach out further.

06/08/2024

Happy everyone! We think it's a good idea to repost this and remind everyone that you can do much more than what you think! We have reached max capacity, and we are running thin on what we can do. But with proper guidance and by being proactive, you can help cats and kittens as well. You don't need professionals to get started in changing a life!

We wish we could help every single cat out there, but our resources are very limited, and this is not just us! Many other rescues are so full, we sadly have to choose how and when to step in. Ask yourself these questions and decide if YOU can step in!

Are you able and/or willing to trap the cat? We can offer guidance if you’ve never done this before. We can also help you find places that rent or lend traps, as well as trapping services if you are willing and able to pay for them (and trust us, they are SO worth it!)

Can you take the cat to the vet? If you can’t take them yourself, over concern for costs or time, are you able to donate to cover the vet bill? If your concern is over a cat that seems sick or injured, time is always of the essence. Not only are they vulnerable, but if they are sick they could spread it to other cats in the area. Are they a cat that is not neutered or spayed? We’re on kitten season, so getting them to the vet is very important.

Are you able to temporarily foster the cat? In cases where the cat needs to recover, it is especially important that they are somewhere safe. Even if the cat will be released again later, it is best that they heal in a safe environment. Even a small room in your home!

Have you contacted rescues in your area? We said every one of us is swamped, but they can be your source for low cost vets, traps, and maybe someone is around that can help you trap!

Time is one of the most important things to consider when helping a cat and waiting longer can create emergencies.

URGENT HELP NEEDED

These kittens and their momma will be removed by the location's administrators and euthanized. They are in Sasebo, Nagasaki, but we are willing to get transport to other areas. We are looking for anyone who can take in one or two kittens and/or momma cat. They are at the moment shy, as they have been made scared by the admins of the location. The person who contacted us about this can pet them, so we think that after time in a safe environment, they will be less shy/scared. This is an emergency situation, and time is of the essence. We need adopters for these kittens and momma cat. Please share the heck out of this post and contact anyone who might be interested in helping them out. We will find transport for them. If anyone in the area can house them to at least get them off the dangerous area, contact us asap.
