Japan Cat Network International is a registered NPO that helps people help pets.

We provide advice, support, materials and other information so that people can assist animals in need within their own community. JCN has helped to start hundreds of trap-neuter and return / rescue efforts throughout Japan. JCN runs two small no-kill shelters; one of which serves as a rescue base in response to the Tohoku disaster. We are committed to educating the public on the benefits of spay-n

euter and we strongly support the no-kill movement. JCN has been featured internationally and on Animal Planet’s Must Love Cats program. Dozens of articles and reports have been produced about JCN’s efforts. 🍾 Our last post of 2024, everyone!! 🥂

It's been a wild ride, but there have been so many accomplishments to be proud of! While we are still working on our numbers for this year's report, let's look at some of the things we accomplished together!

– We were able to place 98 cats in foster homes!

– We placed 65 cats in loving forever homes!

–34 new arrivals in Kyoto, and nearly all the cafe residents from last year have graduated to fosters and forever homes

– The Japan Cat Network Facebook group gained over 2,500 community members for a total of more than 12,500 people

We are not done! We are so excited for what next year will bring in support, education, and cat rescue! We couldn't have made it without the community's support and help through all of this. All the donors and volunteers, you've made this a great year and while we know 2025 will come with challenges, we are confident in the support the community gives us!

Happy everyone!

If you join us during our weekly livestreams then you probably recognize these faces! These are some of the cats and kittens at the Cat Café! At the moment our shelter is full and that limits what we can do to help other cats and kittens that need us! One way you can help is by applying to foster one of these amazing cats! It will be a great holiday gift for everyone involved!

For the shelter cat or kitten, you give them the opportunity to get to know the life inside a loving home, and the chance for their personalities to really come forward! Some cats shy away from fully being themselves with the other cats around.

Can you guys help us get this letter to santa in time?

Dear Santa Claws,

We is the cats and kittens of Japan Cat Network. We heard the hoomans talking about you. You sound nice. They says you bring gifts to good hoomans. We is good cats and kittens. We can haz gifts?

We is so lucky to have a safe, warm place to live. It’s getting cold outside. We luvs our catio but also luvs being able to come in the warms. Can we haz more outside warms? Can we haz new cozy beds?

We hears you eats cookies, we can haz cookies too? Do they make cats and kittens cookies? Foods is good too. We eat many foods. Cats food. Kittens food. Wet food. Dry food. And Yooinairee food. We dont know that last one, but some of must eats it. We is many cats and kittens. We needs lots of foods becuz we eats lots and lots. And lots.

Hoomans haz toys. We can haz toys? We likes wand toys. We likes mouses toys. We likes catnips toys. We promises to share!

Every day the hoomans steal our poops. And our litters. Do you knows what they do with them? We dont know. We know hoomans are strange. But we needs the litters so we can bury our poops from the hoomans. We can haz more litters? Oh and the peeing pads too! Hoomans can haz our pees.

We is many cats and kittens, but we knows more cats and kittens need Japan Cat Network. Please help our hoomans help the cats and kittens. Some of us found our way here with magic boxes call traps. We can haz traps?

Hoomans talk about moneys. What is moneys? It buys the foods. It buy the litters. Does it buys the warms? Does it buy the lucky food the foods the hoomans calls medisin? If yes, more moneys please. Some of us haz heard them talk about sponsors. We can haz sponsors?

We luvs our hoomans here but we are many cats and kittens and the hoomans are not many. We cats and kittens must shares laps!! Can we haz more hoomans? Or can we each haz our own hooman? Will move for own hooman

Santa, we asks for lots and lots. We are sorry. Are it too much? Can you carrys it? If helpful, send in boxes. We like boxes. The Amazon boxes are purrfect!

🎄 All we want for Christmas is YOU! 🎄

These kitties are forever grateful to be in safe and warm foster homes that love them and enjoy seeing them grow each day, but I'm sure that if they had one Christmas wish it would be to find their forever person soon! And maybe extra treats, but that's a given!

If you are feeling a little chilly, miss having a furry little companion and maybe the ghosts of Christmas are telling you it may be time to open up your heart and home again, why not consider one (or 2-3 😉) of these kitties? ❄️ Baby, it’s cold outside! ❄️

Happy everyone! As the temperatures are dropping, we are here to remind you that just like us, cats can get cold or even freeze. Very young or elderly cats are especially in danger. Here are some tips on how to keep your furry little friend warm! Both indoor cats and our precious community cats who need our help the most to stay warm!

–Indoor cats:

–Provide warm beds and blankets! There are many great products available to help your cat stay warm in the winter. Ensure heating pads are designed for pets and follow the directions. Heating pads are also great for senior cats who are dealing with stiff joints and arthritis. Better yet, share your bed! The greatest source of heat for your cat is YOU! So move over and take advantage of the extra cuddles kitty is going to want!

–Playtime! Provide your cat with extra playtime, as staying active will help them warm up and boost their metabolism. Set aside time each day for interactive play and give them plenty of toys to keep them interested.

–Outdoor cats:

–Provide a warm shelter! Help care for community cats by building an outdoor shelter. Usea large (30 gal) and small (20 gal) plastic tub. Never use hay, blankets or towels, as they retain moisture, making the shelter wet and cold. Instead, use straw as it makes the best insulation and bedding! Ensure the shelter is protected from the elements and elevated off the ground. Make sure it’s not too large, as it will be difficult for the cat’s body heat to keep the space warm. Check regularly, clean and replace straw as needed.

–Ice, ice, baby! Prevent food and water from freezing by providing it fresh every day, or better yet, twice a day and not letting it freeze. Building a feeding station will make this easier, but not allowing leftovers to freeze will work! Don't use metal bowls, try to feed in sunny areas, and using microwavable heating pads will help!

– Indoor and outdoor cats:

–Meal time! Cat's appetite increases as the degrees drop! Staying warm requires more calories, so add a few extra high calorie, nutritious treats or increase the amount of wet food! This is especially important for outdoor cats as they need all the energy they can get to stay warm!

–Festive dangers! Look out for the hidden dangers of the season. Poinsettias and lilies are popular during the holiday, but are poisonous to cats! Also be careful with your holiday decor as some (tinsel, for example) can be ingested and cause an upset stomach or blockage!

–Anti-freeze: highly poisonous to cats and even a small amount can be fatal. To ensure the safety of both outdoor and indoor cats make sure to:

>>Clean up spillage quickly and safely.

>>Use non-toxic options, or no anti-freeze products.

>>Ensure all bottles and containers are closed tightly and sealed to avoid spillage that could harm your indoor cat.

–Other important notes 📝

>>Check your car before you start up! Cats can crawl into car bonnets and engines looking for warmth.

>> Continue tick and flea treatment! These pesky parasites can survive if it's not cold enough!

>> Cat's nose, ears, tail, and paws are more exposed to the cold and can get frostbite!

>> Freezing posture: if you see a cat like this, they are working extra hard to stay warm: fur fluffed up, limbs drawn in or curled into a tight ball, eyes closed.

Happy ! We have a great update today! The tuxie trio (Ollie, Mimi, Take) have not only found their forever homes, but they have been adopted TOGETHER!!!

Their new foster is getting used to their energy but loving every second with them!

“I thought I was adopting one cat (any cat who needed a home) and then after the interview, two (Ollie and Mimi), and then when I saw the trio together in their foster home, I couldn’t imagine separating Take from his siblings. Seeing them so happy and supportive of each other, I know I made the right decision.”

Sometimes you come to JCN looking for one life pawrtner, but sometimes you are lucky enough to find 2 OR 3! Their new guardian loves having them in their home, and they look forward to seeing their little faces when they get home. They are enjoying their different personalities and they are looking forward to seeing how they keep growing! Endless supply of energy and all!

What a great opportunity have we had at JCN watching this trio grow, and we are so excited for their new lives!

Happy everyone! We have a short but sweet update for all of you!

Two weeks ago, we were contacted by a group of local TNR volunteers who were concerned with the safety of the area cats. There had been harassment of the local cats, with chemicals having been added to water dishes, and even the disappearance of one cat. Two cats stayed with us temporarily, and later moved to be with one of the volunteers, along with supplies provided by us. The calico, now known as Soup, was really fearful and difficult to catch. She came to stay with us on Friday and was placed in a trial home on Sunday.

Today all kitties are doing well in their respective foster and trial homes. We are glad the TNR group has been keeping an eye on the local cats and knew they needed to act! Being able to respond quickly in getting cats out of dangerous situations is possible thanks to the support from the community and those that help us make an impact through donations!

What an exciting week this has been! Not only did we make our Giving Tuesday goal, but we made it over our goal! With over 55 donors, we were able to raise over $7,500! We can't name you all, but we are grateful you stuck with us and gave us that push to make it! This incredible amount can help us house our resident cats for two and a half months, or feed 21 residents for a whole year!

And that's not all! Throughout last week members of the community also took advantage of Amazon's Black Friday deals and donated supplies for the cats and kittens at the shelter! A big shout out to:

We're still pushing for our !

Do you remember Futa? He was rescued with a glue trap stuck on him. Part of his skin had been ripped. He needed transportation to receive treatment. He needed the glue removed expertly. He needed a skin graft. All of this happened because JCN stepped in. Donors helped get him to Tokyo. We're still paying for his treatment and donations help with all of that, for him and many cats like him!

Today is the day to make a big impact for cats like Futa! We have an exciting match of $3,000, so every dollar donated becomes two until we have $6,000! Another donor has a challenge for the community: If we get 10 new monthly donors OR current donors that increase their donation during Giving Tuesday, we also unlock a gift of $500!

Despite our far reach and the number of cats we save, our reliable income from monthly subscribed donors is less than $2,500 a month. We need more support to change lives, and we want to do it with you.

The impact your gift could have:

–A monthly gift of $30 can feed a resident cat a high-quality diet

–A gift of $30 neuters a feral tomcat and a $50 gift spays a female - reducing fighting, disease, and kittens being born in dangerous situations

–A gift of $70 can cover a kitten's first vet visit, including vaccines and safe flea treatment
