It is with immense sadness and disbelief, that we share the heartbreaking news Lisa has passed away at hospital in the early hours of June 18th.
Lisa was the founder of The Small Animal Rescue Society of B.C. and well known for her dedication and advocacy for the animals. Lisa lived and breathed for the unwanted small animals, her life was dedicated to them.
Lisa had a history of lung and bronchial illness.
Please be patient with the Volunteers of SARSBC while we navigate this tragedy in regards to the rescue work.
The remaining animals in the care of SARSBC are currently in foster homes.
The local Animal Rescue community will be planning a celebration of life for Lisa at a future date. And we will continue to update the community through social media as more information comes.

WSDA has confirmed a case of rabbit hemorrhagic disease ( ). The confirmed case was in King County and presented with sudden mortality of 90% of the rabbits.
There is now a vaccine available and rabbit owners can speak with their veterinarian about the possibility of vaccinating their rabbits. We received a call from a girl who called a local shelter and was told to call us about orphan *domestic* baby rats.
The mom rat passed away 3 days ago and she is distraught about the babies. She is crying on the message and is hoping to surrender them to us.

Today is World Hamster Day!
We adore hamsters! Although there are 19 different species of hamster worldwide, only five species are domesticated, with the Syrian hamster being the most popular type of hamster kept as a pet.
These super cute animals are probably best known for their ability to store food in their cheek pouches. But did you know that the word ‘hamster’ comes from the German word ‘Hamstern’, which means ‘to hoard’?
Emma Keeble, one of our vets (and a hamster enthusiast!) has shared her five top tips to keep your pet hamster happy and healthy:
🐹Make sure that you change your hamster’s food daily. Supplementing your hamster's regular food with small pieces of fresh green or root vegetables and some good quality hay will ensure that they get a balanced diet. A small amount of good quality hay may also be given for your hamster to dig and nibble. Avoid making any sudden changes to the diet.
🐹In the wild, hamsters can run over five miles a night so it’s important that your pet gets daily exercise. Their cage should be equipped with as large as possible non-slatted wheel for running, with a non-slip surface and axel free.
🐹Hamster’s incisor teeth continue to grow throughout their life. Make sure that they have access to suitable gnawing material to keep their teeth in tiptop condition.
🐹Arrange an annual health check for your hamster with your vet to ensure that your pet remains fit and healthy.
🐹Watch out for sticky eyes, blood in their urine, loss of appetite, weight loss, loose stools, overgrown front teeth, bald patches in their fur, lethargy and wheezing. If your hamster shows any of these signs or you see a sudden change in their behaviour, take them to a vet immediately.

It’s so sweet to see the buns out and enjoying themselves at yoga today. The babies are in there for all the snuggles they can get.
At the start of the day they were all strangers.
Thankfully they are picking up on the zen vibe and all getting along 🤗🤗💕🐇💕🐇

Thank you to Willowbrook Shopping Centre and Ashley Belluz for hosting us and helping us to spread the word about responsible pet guardianship and that at Easter, a chocolate bunny is a much better choice than a live one.

We get far toooooooooo many emails from parents who tell us that their child has lost interest, is too busy or has gone off to school and they, the parents, have no time to care for "it".
Parents need to consider this before ever bringing in any animal into the home.
Not to be outdone, today is also 🥕🥕International Carrot Day🥕🥕
Myth - Rabbits eat carrots as a big part of their diet.
Reality: carrots shouldn't be a main source of food.
Rabbits don't naturally eat root vegetables or fruit.
Carrots and fruit are high in sugar and should only be fed in small amounts as occasional treats.

People are looking to rehome their animals because their kids lose interest, they are too busy or they often just forget about their wee companions.
Most small animals have no way to draw attention to themselves and they will silently suffer.
PLEASE do your research before bringing in any animal. Many can live as long as a cat or dog….not just until you’re bored with them.
Let’s end the suffering.

Ukraine is a sovereign country and is not invading any foreign territories, Ukraine is protecting its own integrity from Russia's invasion which started 8 years ago with Crimea annexation and actual (but not official) annexation of some of the Donbas region by supporting so-called "rebels" and talking about "civil" war.
Yesterday masks were thrown off by Russia's recognition of the independence of those territories which again violates all the international laws and agreements and may lead to new, full military aggression against Ukraine with ~200k army concentrated near Ukraine borders.
Show your support for Ukraine by highlighting the events on social media and using the hashtag . The louder our voices are, the more governments listen to us.

THROWBACK THURSDAY - Remembering Daisy (RIP) Daisy came to us when a social worker contacted us as her owner was no longer able to provide the complex care Daisy needed. As you can see from the picture (in comments) when we first picked her up (sorry its so blurry), Daisy had a bad eye and bad front teeth that would overgrow making it impossible for her to eat or drink. Despite all of her problems, she was a very happy and outgoing gal. We immediately clipped her teeth and as you can see from the video, she was so happy that she immediately began to clean and groom herself....something that she could not do due to her overgrown front teeth. We also cleaned up her eye and the next day she had her vet visit. Despite all of her issues, Daisy was given some antibiotics and a clean bill of health. She would however require incisor trims for the rest of her life. From there she went to live with Karla who agreed to foster her....and later adopted her 😁 Daisy lived out the rest of her life with her adoptive mom and enjoyed being spoiled and pampered. We are sharing Daisy's story again because people need to realize that no matter how small of an animal, they ALL need and deserve vet care. If one is committing to bringing in a small animal into their lives, one must also plan and commit to meeting all of their needs just as one would for other animals such as cats or dogs. Just because they are small, they don't deserve to suffer.
