The Ojos Azules are an extremely rare breed of cat, born as a result of a genetic mutation and discovered among a feral cat population in New Mexico in 1984. They have unusually dark blue eyes, for which they are named, in Spanish. The Ojos Azules Cat body type is comparable to that of oriental cats and is medium in size. Their foreheads are slightly rounded, faces shaped like a triangle, and the
deep-blue eyes are large and round. Their hind legs are longer than their front legs, and the tail-tip is slightly flattened. The Ojos Azules are a shorthaired breed with an undercoat dense in color. The color of these cats varies to most any color, although a solid white in this breed is undesirable since it can’t be distinguished from other, more common white cats with blue eyes. The Ojos Azules has been accepted for registry with The International Cat Association, but there is some controversy regarding the pursuit of this breed, due to genetic issues when they are not out-crossed with another breed.
