👏🏡🐔THANK YOU Annie for opening up your home and garden (and amazing chook house) for everyone to enjoy as part of Geelong Sustainable House Day 2022. This is a great example of what you can do any backyard. When I help people design chicken coops/ houses/ runs for small spaces, Annie’s place comes to mind. It uses a lot of Permaculture principles and is incredibly functional for a busy person who wants to maximise their space and make things easy. Plus, have happy chooks! 🐓👏
If you want help creating or retrofitting a beautiful chook space, send me a message and I’ll send you some options to get started 🙂🐓Elise

The biggest problem my backyard 🐓 owners have in winter is avoiding their space becoming a muddy mess!
Mud and chooks are not a good mix.
We’re nearly at the end of winter here in Australia, but SAND can really help. Ask for ‘coarse washed sand’/equestrian/river/propagation sand, not kids’ play sand. Elise

How do you store your chicken grain? I love that I can open these bins one-handed and don’t have to put the lid back on! They also keep the feed dry and away from rodents🙌🐓 Elise

Whats the best breed of chickens for kids?
Do you have a young family and want/have chickens?🐔
Many people are disappointed their chooks aren’t as tame as they imagined they would be...Building trust with chooks takes time.
Start with younger pullets if you can, and teach your kids to move quietly around the flock. Occasional treats also help!

Welcome to Chicken Coach
Want to keep healthy chickens, as naturally as possible? You’re in the right place. I’m Elise McNamara and I help families, schools and free range farmers to maintain healthy, happy and productive hens.
Whether it be sport, fashion, travel or music, everyone has a passion. Mine happens to have beaks and feathers. As anyone who knows me knows, I love poultry, no not poetry, poultry – yes, chickens!
I’ve helped dozens of families get started with chickens across Geelong and Melbourne, and now offer ongoing advice, in-person workshops and flock maintenance visits (worm testing, worming, dusting birds for mites etc). I now also sell the natural products that I love and use to keep my birds in tip-top condition.
I'm fortunate to have found many other passionate poultry people over the years, sharing and collecting knowledge from the best breeders, farmers, vets and avian specialists in Australia.
My special interests:
Chickens in Permaculture and practical garden design
Successfully keeping chickens in community settings
Role of nutrition in disease prevention and egg production
Chicken caravans - chicken behaviour and decreasing flock stress
Diversifying your farm with poultry
So if you or someone you know needs chicken advice, or you'd like to organise a workshop or masterclass for your feed store, school or community group, get in touch. I'm always happy to talk chooks!
