Is your pup entering adolescence?

You know, when all the hard work you’ve put in seems to go out the window as your dog enters their “teenage stage”? Adolescence in dogs typically occurs between 6-24 months of age and can be a difficult time for us owners! Our dogs are growing up and learning to navigate their world as an adult which means we start to see an influx in reactivity and general behavior issues.

Not to fear! We are here to help!

Contact us today to schedule your free intro session!🐾

Image description: A brown GSP dog with a collar and lead staring intently behind the camera.

Text reads: Adolescence is a time for patience, not push. The frontal cortex is still developing during adolescence and so a young dog’s ability to control its own behaviour is not yet fully developed. This can be mistaken for naughtiness.

In honor of National Dog Rescue Day, meet Cap:

Captain "Cap" Jake was the dog that started it all at The Barracks K-9. We adopted him when he was only 9 months old, He is now 4 years old and a purebred German Shepherd. Like most good dogs, he has taught and given us more than we even realize most days. Thank you for everything Cap, means more than you will ever know.

It has been a LOOONG 2 days, but at the end of it, Pepper and Loki earned their NOVICE title in barn hunt. While both teams had their ups and downs, Team Barracks came out victorious. Let's not forget Bree killing it with all the photos and video to come. All in all, great weekend.

Does your pup suffer from itchy skin?

Spring is officially here and the changing of seasons can result in a spike in allergies for our furry friends.

While natural remedies can be incredibly helpful, please be sure to also contact your veterinarian if your pup has a chronic issue.

We believe in and love hand feeding for so many reasons.

👉🏼Builds Up Your Dogs Focus
👉🏼Helps Teach Bite Inhibition
👉🏼Creates a Strong Bond With Your Dog
👉🏼Helps Fast Eaters
👉🏼Helps Shy & Fearful Dogs
👉🏼Helps with Impulse Control

We also often use kibble as a reward when training but not always.

Questions we often get about hand feeding.
❓Do we hand feed every meal and/or all their meal?
👉🏼No we hand feed a couple hand fulls and each dog gets hand feed at random.

❓What do we do if we have a nippy pupp/dog?
👉🏼 Close hand feeding is accomplished by simply keeping your hand closed until your dog stops mugging you for the food. As soon as your dog backs away, looks away, or just stops pawing/licking at your hand, open your hand and feed him some food. Soon he’ll realize the quicker he shows self-control, the quicker he gets to eat.

❓Do I have to hand feed for the rest of the dogs life?
👉🏼No, but doing it once in a while as your dog grows is never a bad idea.

❓Who should be the one hand feeding?
👉🏼We recommend anyone in the home. It also helps with shy or fearful dogs. Dogs who are nervous around people benefit greatly from hand feeding, especially if you get other members of the family, and eventually friends and neighbors to hand feed your nervous dog too. Don’t rush this process, Start wherever your dog is most comfortable and gradually work up to more contact.

Truth hurts 🤷🏼‍♀️

I hear this almost every day. Of course when you ask what “everything” includes, it’s invariably a list of things which are in the owner’s comfort zone.

Tools that feel good to the owner. Training methodologies which feel good to the owner. Lifestyle dynamics which feel good to the owner.

Ask them about things outside their comfort zone and you’ll quickly find that “everything” is actually an extremely limited list. Ask them about leadership—real leadership, which sets standards for behavior and levies valuable consequences for breeching these standards, and you’ll find some dancing. Ask them about using tools which share these consequences in a fashion which resonate with the dog and you’ll find some dancing. Ask them about whether they’re willing to make their dogs uncomfortable in pursuit of their stated goals and you’ll find some dancing.

People want the problem solved but aren’t prepared for the solution.

If you want to live in a world where reality is based on your feelings and comfort zone, you’ll find very few solutions. But if you’re willing to be honest and courageous in your pursuit of truth and reality, you just might find your answers…you might actually find your “everything”.

P.S. I too was once in the “everything” camp, and I too was once mired in behavior issues with my dogs. It was only when I was truly prepared to explore reality that I found my answers and found what my dogs were truly capable of. Was it fun or comfortable? Not at at all—at least not at first. But when my dogs became amazing examples of well behaved canines who could go anywhere and do just about anything, it opened up our world, our connection, and we had more fun and more enjoyment of life together than I had ever thought possible—when I lived in my comfort zone.

DONT' KILL WITH KINDNESS

While everyone has good intentions of providing the best life for their pets, sometimes the opposite happens. Uncontrolled feeding and inadequate activity/exercise can lead to canine obesity. Many times, the "lazy" dog who is a good boy, doesn't have much of a choice. Overfeeding can cause multiple issues from joint and hip pain, respiratory issues, among many others. These issues can be severe in large and small breeds alike.

The information below is a great reference, however, always consult with your Vet regularly for a proper puppy nutrition plan.

"Fat and Happy," is not always the best choice.
