To my surprise when doing inspections yesterday I found a handful of emergancy queen cells. So I posted about it to the beekeeping association for the area I live in and for another beekeeping page for the area I live in. I was told it was emergency queen cells that something happened to my queen. Another chimed in since they are called queen cells probably 9 to 10 days ago is when it happened. She was alive and well 10 days ago and in the bottom box. So I know I didn’t hurt or roll her in anyway. So that day I went to another city 1 1/2 hr away to buy one. Went home went ahead and squished the remaining queen cells. As I don’t want those competing with the new queen whom gets to stay. Well right when I put the hive back together and was ready to install her she died! I was told she may have overheated despite being in the shade. The following day I was able to find a new queen from someone local and known to the beekeeping association where I live. Now I have to check 3 to 4 days from now to see if she was accepted.

I’ve been attending to more swarm catching more specifically cutouts. This time of year it’s hot over 100 degrees. So right now it’s only emergencies people whom are allergic to bee stings that are being responded to otherwise they are wait listed till it’s cooler. Why? Well when you are wearing protection gear it gets 🥵 which is why non emergency has to wait till it’s cooler. We literally wear personal fans while doing these cutouts and it’s still hot the fans make it less worse. So please be understanding it can get dangerous for us if we overheat cause a lot of the time we are out in the heat doing these cutouts. This is one I attended a few days ago. A friend is teaching me what to look for and how to read bee behavior to minimize me from getting stung. Plus teaching me what I need to do when doing this by myself!

I have a bunch of Mongolian and mammoth sunflower seeds for harvest. Plus lots of eggs from my chickens, and some honey frames I can harvest! So excited but a little sad the heat is killing some of my garden. Well now I know what I need to do for next year. I may give away some sunflower seeds to whomever wants to plant these giants.

Was able to participate in this cutout today. Blake Sacramento Beekeeper Dacy was awesome and explaining each step he took. Funny enough when I took off the head covering/vale didn't realize there was a bee crawling on my face. I felt it nearing my nose and I softly swatted it off. Another funny thing after we were all done, I had taken my gloves off and I went to reach for something again I felt a buzz that buzz caused me to fling my phone right into a pile of gooey honeycomb. Luckily my phone is waterproof I was able to wash off the sticky honey.

Getting ready to do a full hive inspection and 5 week for every 5 days preventative varroa mite treatment for the (mites/summer). Plus need to care for the garden cause the wind caused one of my Mongolian giant sunflower to break. It was more than 5’9” inches tall too!

Public announcement of there is a swarm of bees gathering on your property please notify your local bee association for your area. Sacramento there is SABA (Sacramento Area Bee Association) and a Blake Sacramento Beekeeper Dacy (FB) whom manages a swarm hotline/postings. If he can’t take it he notifies us members whom may be within the area that can take swarm.

Swarms are not aggressive majority of the time as they don’t have a hive to protect. They will fly around and that can be rather scary for the general public. FYI just a side note dark clothing bees are not fond of as to them it could be a predator. Do not spray water it can cause them to disburse or agitate the bees. Do not spray pesticides as obv reason will kill the bees and there is no reason for us to come. We will take bees back to our own bee yard/apiary having bees with pesticides on them can hurt our hives possibly we will not take that chance. Lastly we have the equipment and protection when we relocate the bees. Some of us this is a hobby to others it’s part of what they love. Please let your local bee association know if there is a swarm on your property. We get catch the swarm for free. Only time it’s not if there is a cut out within a building/home. Swarm we catch is ours to keep, relocate, or donate, etc.

Last night I lightly sprayed some water on my plants and then sprinkled some lady bugs over them. Lady bugs do not like to fly at night. So if released during the day you could lose a good portion you just bought. Since I have 13 raised beds I should have bought a couple but only one so back to green acres I go. I have variety of sunflowers in my garden to help attract pollinators and birds that eat nonbenificial bugs.

When I filled my watering station it was way too much water. So this bee came in and needed help getting out. So I picked her up and placed her on the sunflower leaf to dry off. She is a forager probably from my hive in the backyard.

Fun fact: depending on the age of the bee dictates what job they do. So if she is foraging her age is around 3 weeks. The average life span is 4 weeks.

Normally you would use a deep brood frame/full frame vs this honey super. This frame came from a swarm that someone gave me. Obv it was full of honey that the bees loved. Instead of taking the frame away I let them have it and they built more comb below the frame. Since it is uniform I will let it be. I did however one frame away had to take out a bunch of wonky looking comb that was overlapping it was hard decision to make but it needed to be done. The frames from the swarm where not waxed frames just the foundation. So I went ahead today and got some waxed frames I set aside for deep brood boxes and installed it today. Bees rather build off frames with a good wax foundation vs ones without. Let me reword that they prefer a foundation with a wax coating vs ones without. I’d like swarm hive to be further along in building comb but they are smaller in size vs my 3 lb packaged bees that have drawn out comb on most of the frames but barely started laying eggs as they’ve only been in hive two for a week and a day. I’ll have more pics next Sunday on both swarm and package bee hive. Decided to do a checkup weekly vs every two weeks. As things can go south quickly and I rather stay on top of things before issues get worse.

Picked up my package bees on the 27th of April. Today I will be checking if the queen is released in hive #2. If not I will probably have to release her myself. Bees have seem to adjust to their new hive.

So I have my compost, all purpose sand (for the chicken coop), and raised bed dirt ordered it will be here Friday. Didn’t want literal crap more specifically steer crap in my car about 85 cubic feet/bags of it and no I don’t have a truck I have a RAV 4! Plus ordered my 10 frame beehive (two deep brood boxes, Queen separator, screen bottom board, etc). Now I’m trying to figure out where to put the hive.
