Here at KEV we often get asked to help with farm animals that don’t go neigh! In the past we have said no (nay, neigh) because we have been so busy treating ones that do.
But both Ewan and Keryn have a soft spot for moos, baas and bleats

Ewan in his 25 years of vet life on the road has spent lots of time helping farm animals, including two years in Gippsland Victoria on dairies and 11 years in south east Queensland on dairies and beef properties (when he was not out on the thoroughbred studs).

So if you are in the Huon and Channel region and need some help with your farm animals please give us a call.

We have had a productive day at the Kev Shed with Dr Ewan’s best friend and amazing surgeon Dr Dave Ahern coming back to perform surgeries on some special foals.

Dave gave the final all clear to a gorgeous little filly which he operated on from his previous visit removing screws from her fetlocks and the plates from her knees.
She now is the new owner of a lovely set of straight front legs 💗 We think the photos say it all!

Dave and Ewan also performed a lengthy procedure on another foal that had developed a severe club foot. This entailed creating a new hoof capsule with the correct angles and then performing a deep digital flexor tendon tenotomy (cutting the tendon). We could not be happier with the result and we’re looking forward to this exquisite foal having a long life as a performance horse

At KEV we will strive to identify foals in the next crop that might need a helping hand from Dr Dave to reach their full potential as he will be making regular visits

At KEV we are feeling very lucky to have Ewan’s best mate from uni come and operate on some challenging cases this week.

Dr Dave Ahern graduated with first class honours from University of Queensland in 1998 alongside Ewan.
Upon graduating they went their separate ways and Dave worked in mixed practices for several years until Dave decided to start his own practice from a bare piece of land on the outskirts of Beaudesert, Qld . So in 2002 Dave and Ewan were reunited!

For the next 20 years Dave developed one of the most successful equine veterinary referral hospitals in the country - renowned for its high standards, great work environment, volume of cases, world class in-house standards of CPD.
Dave is considered an enigmatic genius by his peers with no postgraduate qualifications other than “a PhD in Results” having achieved levels of life fulfilment, contentment, and standards of excellence that the vast majority of us will only ever dream of.
He is a gifted surgeon with a special interest in foal leg deformities, but willing to meet most challenges.

Dave and his wife Heather really enjoyed their trip to Hobart and we are making plans for them to come back regularly and offer these specialist surgical services.

🌟💙 Boys Boys Boys 💙🌟

It was all about the boys for us over the Christmas break. We welcomed two new little men to the world.

The first being our own mare Daisy (Don Dancier x Londonderry) foaling down. This c**t is by Ingrid Klimke’s amazing Grand Prix stallion Franziskus

The second foaling down was the beautiful Bea, a young maiden who is out of a purpose bred TB mare called "Lizzie" by the wonderful German jumping stallion Canturado. This stunning strong c**t is by the famous eventing stallion Grafenstolz

When Lordy is not out winning ribbons he is our blood donor for KEV patients in need.
Unrelated geldings are the donor of choice🩸

Little Foo is a fighter 💙 and didn’t have the best start to life being born premature with significant anaemia

Foo and his mum have the best nature and have taken all of the interventions and help in their stride

It has also been extremely beneficial that mum is a good traveller which has enabled her and Foo to travel to our facility multiple times during the day and night

We’re hoping this donation helps put the spring back in Foo’s step 🦄

Last week we were privileged to have Dr Olivia James, the only registered and practicing equine dental specialist in Australia, visit us to do some dental surgeries on our patients.

Olivia treated a range of patients with different dental conditions, but the theme of the week was EOTRH!

EOTRH (Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis) is a very painful disease of the incisors (front teeth) and canine teeth of the horse. The only treatment is extraction of the affected teeth.

The video in the comments shows the beautiful Jake, who was unable to graze due to this debilitating disease, but 3 hours after having ALL his incisors extracted, he was happier than ever, munching away on the grass. And that's why we do what we do ❤️💙

NB!! most horses will not show outwardly that they are in pain, so a yearly or 6-monthly examination by a qualified veterinarian is so important to diagnose dental disease.

With a vet shortage looming, how can owners ease the strain? A significant tipping point for many vets is ‘after-hours’….caring for clients during regular business hours and then being on call for emergencies ‘after-hours’ every night of the week. American Association of Equine Practitioners

Do you struggle to find time in your week to meet one of our vets to tend to your horses needs? We have a solution!

We offer a service where you can drop your fur baby off on the way to work and pick them up on your way home

We have 4 day paddocks fitted with automatic water troughs and shelter sheds. This is a great option for procedures requiring sedation and gives the patient plenty of time to wake up before travelling home 🏡

We had a great day gastroscoping yesterday together with Alex from Randlab
Alex took a great amount of time and care showing owners their horses anatomy and explaining what he was seeing.
There was a lot of discussion about diet, medication and daily management changes based on the horses diagnoses
We got to see some squamous ulcers as well as glandular ulcer disease.
All horses were fasted perfectly, some at CVEC and some at our Leslie vale practice

24/07/2023

We’re taking expressions of interest for a gastroscoping day in conjunction with Alex from Randlab on Tuesday the 15th of August

KEV vets, together with Alex, will be based at CVEC in the morning and then gastroscoping horses in Leslie vale in the afternoon

There is also limited ability for some clients to fast their horse for the evening prior on site

Please message Dr Ewan for further information and to secure a spot in the list

Dr Ewan has had a fantastic time at the national conference catching up with past colleagues and friends

This was a great opportunity to refresh on topics such as colic, anaesthetics, pain relief and diagnostic techniques in lameness

There is also a lot to look forward to such as a Randlab scoping day in August (date to be confirmed) as well as stand up surgical opportunities in our new facility with highly trained surgical specialists who are very eager to regularly visit beautiful Hobart

⚠️⚠️Ewan will be away until Friday, Gertie will be on call for this period. The phone will be diverted to Gertie as Ewan is not contactable during this time⚠️⚠️
