BirchBark offers PetAid to pet owners (at or below 300% of federal poverty level) who are unable to cover costs of veterinary care when their animals are facing a catastrophic, life-threatening or life-compromising illness that has a good prognosis. To provide access for pet owners to life-saving veterinary care and help keep animals in their loving homes, we rely on private donations. There are so many reasons why spaying and neutering is a smart choice. It helps ensure that you don't inadvertently contribute to the problem of pet overpopulation (and euthanasia of unowned animals), it can reduce the risk of some behavioral challenges (such as wandering and marking), and it reduces the risk of some very serious diseases and illnesses. One of those illnesses is pyometra, a life-threatening infection of the uterus. This adorable little baby, Luna, became very sick with pyometra this week, and needed emergency surgery to save her life. Luna is only 10 months old, and should have a full life ahead of her. Thanks to you, she does. Luna and her loving family are so grateful. ❤️

We have been experiencing a flurry of activity from our new Senior PetAid Project, through which pets belonging to seniors in affordable housing can receive preventative care at one of our partner vets in the community. One of the pets assisted this month is Twinkles. We loved what Twinkles's mom shared about her special cat, whom we are honored to be able to support!

"Twinkles is my little light, with the perfect personality of silly and sweet. She's not a lap cat, but she's very affectionate with strokes and head butts. She may only have 3 legs, but I'm not perfect either, so we match. Otherwise she's in good health. Don't know what I'd do without her."

One of our favorite things is staying in touch with - and getting to see! - some of the pets and people we've assisted. Today was a real treat for our Program Manager, Sarah, because she got to make a special visit to Diva, a PetAid recipient from late last year. Diva struggles with chronic pancreatitis and requires a prescription diet that costs almost 7 times more per pound than a standard diet from a reputable brand does. Sarah delivered a donation of the diet Diva needs to stay healthy, and - in return - received plenty of happy wiggles and pretty puppy smiles from Diva!

Ending the work week with a face that brought a smile to our faces! This beautifully whiskered boy is named Oatie, and he recently was in a lot of discomfort with a urinary blockage ... one of the most common problems we see among the kitties we support! Urinary blockages require urgent care, typically costing several thousand dollars, and that was an expense that Oatie's guardian wasn't able to carry alone.
Each of you - our amazing supporters - stepped forward and offered a hand, ensuring that Oatie received the care he needed. Thank you!

Mora is a big boy with a very big, very sweet heart. He means the world to his guardian, a student who says that Mora does everything with them ... eat, sleep, and snuggle. Last week, Mora suffered from a scary and dangerous medical emergency - intussusception, a condition in which part of the intestines telescope into another. Mora needed surgery, and this unanticipated and major expense was more than could be shouldered by Mora's guardian alone. Thankfully, our partners at Coast Veterinary Services and our supporters ensured that Mora was able to have the surgery he needed. Happy days are ahead for Mora!

Khloe's guardian was just a child when Khloe became part of her life. They grew up together, providing each other with comfort and stability through deeply challenging — even tragic — times. But their most recent challenge threatened to tear them apart.

Khloe was diagnosed with pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection requiring emergency surgery. As a student, her guardian faced an overwhelming financial burden. The cost of care was simply beyond her grasp.

Thanks to your support and the partnership of Pet Maintenance & Repair, Khloe received the surgery she needed. The bond between Khloe and her mom is profound, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped protect that relationship when it was threatened.
