It’s been an eternity since the last post, so to help make up for it, here’s a photo dump of cute Cider pictures!

Summer is her time of year, so she’s loving life. We often have to drag her inside from cooking on the back porch or else she’d stay out there until she has a heat stroke - even then she’d probably want to stay outside.

You’d never guess Cider is 12 years old based on her energy levels and reckless jumping on/off furniture (which we often call “puppy parkour”). This mostly can be accredited to: her monthly Librella injection, the dog-equivalent of ibuprofen, and regular walks. We’re pretty sure her favorite part of walks is the peanut butter Kong she gets afterwards, and she becomes very belligerent if you forget to give her one.

Although she sometimes drives us crazy, Cider brings us such immense joy. She’s such a ham and seems to go out of her way to make us laugh. No matter how bad the day has been, Cider will always be there with a snuggle. Or a smack. She’s learned how to slap, and it’s her favorite thing to do if you’re not giving her 100% of your attention. And that’s fine by us - when you’re this cute, you can get away with just about anything! 😆

Update: about a week ago, Cider was struggling to walk on her left, rear leg, and was in a lot of pain. We saw the vet, and though we were told there was a chance that her ACL repair from years ago gave out, there was also a chance of bone cancer. Cider had to be sedated so they could run some tests, and we were told to come back in 45 minutes. Let’s just say 45 minutes is a lot of time to do research and go down the worse-case-scenario path.

When we got back to the vet, the vet was waiting for us and she excitedly exclaimed, “It’s not bone cancer!!!” More than a few happy tears were shed in that moment. Right now the consensus is that it’s likely an ACL injury, but the extent of that will be revealed with time. It’s likely the mechanism used to fix her ACL broke, but there’s a chance Cider just tweaked it in a weird way. She was given a painkiller regimen, and will be back to the vet in two weeks for examination while she’s under for her annual teeth cleaning.

Though the painkillers are helping substantially, Cider still isn’t back to 100%. When she wakes up or is ready to go to bed, she gets pretty stiff and struggles to move. We have to help her up and down the steps, and sometimes we have to take her the long way around to the garage after potty breaks since she can’t make it back up the few steps into the house.

Though Cider is 12 (we think), you’d never know it from how spunky she is. This makes the future steps just that more complicated. Trying to fix her ACL via surgery is an option, but there’s a gamble it ends up putting her in more pain while she heals, especially given her age. Do we want to risk that and put her enjoyment of her golden years in jeopardy?

However, due to her health, she still could have quite a bit of time with us, and putting her mobility as risk by not getting surgery could limit her pain-free happiness and remaining years with us. Research shows a strong link between retaining mobility and lifespan duration.

The vet is still optimistic about the future and keeps reminding us that we have multiple options. We trust our vet with our lives, so we take comfort in her reassurance. If nothing else, we try to focus our minds on our gratitude that it’s not bone cancer. Please pray that we’re led down the best path for Cider and that she remains happy no matter how many years we still have with her.

With Cider’s age, she’s started to drag her paws a bit. And because we take fairly long walks with her daily, it was grinding her nails low. As such, we now put booties on her to prevent this, which allows us to keep taking her on walks, therefore, retaining her mobility. Cider also has a short fur (obviously) thanks to being a pibble, so she now wears a coat in colder temps.

Do we look like crazy dog people when we take her for walks?

Yes.

Do we care.

No. Especially because it’s so cuuuuute!!!! 😍 Her booties make a clippity-clop sound when she walks, and we love it so much!

You know that feeling when you’re being watched from across the room? I actually managed to catch the creeper in the middle of the act! And she had the audacity to keep staring, even after I made direct eye contact. Wow.

Did you know that dog massage is a real thing? It is! I recognize how dumb that sounds, but seriously, check it out on YouTube. This is Cider post-massage. She was bouncing off the walls prior, but her massage calmed her down SO fast. And what you don’t know is that she’s half-cat and very picky about how you pet her.

(Audio on or else it’ll be a super boring video.)

We obviously are dog lovers, which why we want to say: PLEASE 👏 LEASH 👏 YOUR 👏 DOG!!!

Our house is right next to a new construction zone. It also has a pond in the backyard. Now, bless this man for being an awesome grandfather who wanted to show his granddaughter fun things, and we in no way intend to shame him. I’m posting this video to show people how quickly things can go wrong when your dog isn’t leashed.

As you can see, the man picks up his granddaughter, then proceeds to walk down our side yard. Shortly after, his dog follows. At the same time, Cider signaled she needed to go potty, so I leashed her up and let her out the door to the side yard. Needless to say, Cider and I were both startled to see a man standing there. She went into protection mode and lunged at him, nearly knocking me over.

Cider continued pulling and lunging while I was struggling to maintain my balance, keep a death-grip on the leash, and trying to get down three steps without falling down. Mind you, it’s a retractable leash, so I was fiercely praying that it wouldn’t snap and that the locking mechanism wouldn’t give out. I grabbed the leash with my free hand and tried to manually pull Cider towards me so I could grab her collar. I almost had it when the pug comes walking towards us.

At that point, Cider really started to lose her mind. The man stood there doing nothing (I’d guess he froze), so I screamed at him to grab his dog when it took several steps closer towards Cider. Simultaneously, I was pleading with God that Dan would hear the chaos and come help. I BARELY managed to grab Cider’s collar when I heard the most amazing sound of Dan’s voice coming to help! Praise the Lord! We were able to wrangle Cider inside. I was shaking and Cider immediately began to cower, thinking she did something wrong. We gave her lots of pets and treats, and she seemed recovered. Me, on the other hand, had a raging headache the rest of the day from being unexpectedly snapped forward when she first lunged. Praise the Lord that was the worst of it.

It terrifies me to think what could’ve happened.

What if the retractable leash failed?

What if Cider’s collar snapped?

What if she had more slack on her leash?

What if the man wasn’t holding his granddaughter?

What if I lost my balance or the leash got yanked out of my hand?

What if the pug thought Cider wanted to play and ran up to her?

What if we assumed that because our backyard is private we could let Cider off leash?

Bless you if you’ve read this far. I suppose this post isn't just informative, but also a bit of journaling since I’m still shaken up from it. So please, even if you think you’re in a place where you don’t need to leash your dog, do it anyways. All of this occurred in less than one minute’s time and no one anticipated this was going to happen. Lives easily could’ve been lost, so please, please, please leash your dog! 🙏

Cider went in for her annual teeth cleaning + physical this morning. We just got word that she needs five teeth pulled (including her two lower canines, which is in addition to one of the top canines that got pulled last year) and they’re doing a biopsy of a lump we’ve been keeping on eye on for a while.

Baby girl is going to be feeling all types of uncomfortable when she wakes up, so please pray that the biopsy is negative and her mouth heals quickly. 🙏
