Shih Tzu Fairy of South Louisiana This page will post shih-tzus and similar mixes that need grooming, rescue, fostering, or adoption from local shelters. I am not a rescue group nor a breeder.

I promote adoptions and can help connect you to adoptable dogs. Many of these precious small breeds (shih tzus, lhasa apsos, poodles, maltese, bichon) find their way into shelters because of owner surrenders, overbreeding, getting lost, or getting picked up as strays. The shelter is an environment that is scary and unhealthy for them. Sometimes, they come in with eye problems (common for the breed

) or with unbelievable mats. Thankfully, some of these dogs are taken by local rescue groups, which is wonderful! But there is, unfortunately, no breed-specific rescue nearby. I want to use this page to spread the word about dogs at the Companion Animal Alliance shelter, and other South Louisiana shelters, who need to "get out" and find a forever home! Help us help these pups!! If you would be willing to foster, know of a rescue group who would want to take a dog in, could go and clean up some dogs, want to adopt, or need help getting one rehomed--please let us know! Most of the dogs will be at Companion Animal Alliance shelter on Progress Rd. near the airport (225-774-7701). However, other tzus located in South Louisiana will also be posted. The information that is known about the dog (location, gender, age, size, personality, health issues) will be posted with its picture. If you are interested, we can try to get more information, but please remember that not everything is known about shelter dogs. Each shelter or rescue has its own adoption fee, but most will include microchip, vaccinations, and spay/neuter! For contact information about the CAA shelter (in Baton Rouge), other local rescue groups, and other Southern breed-specific rescues, please see Shih Tzu Fairy's "Likes"! About the Page Creator: I have been volunteering with local adoption groups and the shelter since 2010. I got my nickname "The Shih Tzu Fairy" because I love the breed and began to groom some that would show up at the shelter. I ended up adopting one that I cleaned up, and my family "foster failed" with my first foster. I am still volunteering and fostering. This is the reason why I want to help these sweet breeds and mixes find forever families that give them the love and care they deserve.

WHITTLE THISTER ADOPTED 8.26.2025! 💕

You Tube video link: https://youtube.com/shorts/d3oF3yw7KNo

FOR ADOPTION! Note: Only those with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply.
(For more pics, visit nr2r.petfinder.com or www.RoadtoRescueLA.org)

INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY:
PLEASE read profile thoroughly BEFORE applying:
DOG APPLICATION LINK: http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application

Whittle Thister (female)
Intake date: 8/14/2025
Shih Tzu
Approx 3 years old
Intake weight: 10.6 pounds

Adoption fee: $350, which includes vetting, microchip
Benefactor Dog: When we have a popular dog, we dub them a “Benefactor Dog”. A Benefactor Dog will have an above average adoption fee. In other words, for OTHER dogs where the adoption fee is minimal or waived due to age, health or some other reason (although we’ve likely spent hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars) a Benefactor dog will help us somewhat make up the shortfall. If this dog has an above-average adoption fee, she/he is a Benefactor Dog.

Good with other dogs: yes
Cats: unknown – we do not have cats to be able to test

Vetting and other: altered (spayed), up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, heartworm negative, f***l negative, on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention, microchipped

Health issues: none observed.

Temperament: Very sweet, friendly, social

Energy level: medium

Groom needs: high maintenance; requires regular professional grooming, along with intermittent brushing to avoid matting.

Biography: PLEASE keep in mind your AGE! Despite what you may want, we want YOU to outlive the pup
not the other way around! Puppies or younger dogs (especially small-breed) can live 15-20 years!

Whittle Thister came to us from animal control. We do know her story and will be happy to explain it to an approved adopter. Her nails were about an inch long and one of her dew claws was actually growing into her paw pad. She can walk now without pain. She’s a sweet little girl with lots of personality! She does great in a kennel if needed and walks well on a leash. She is a flat-faced dog so be sure to read the “FLAT-FACED” section below about overheating. She’s so fun and sassy and ready for her furever home!

Flat-faced (Brachycephalic) dogs and over-heating: Brachycephalic dogs are prone to overheating and heatstroke, as their facial conformation prohibits effective cooling. Short-faced dogs should stay cool during hot weather, opting for exercise during early mornings and after the sun goes down rather than during the hottest part of the day. In the southern states, you'll need to really wait until fall, spring or winter. The summer months in the south, really don't cool enough in morning or evening to take a flat-faced dog for a walk. You can also help by walking them on a harness instead of attaching the leash to the dog’s collar.

**WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW**
*We do adopt out of state provided the adopter is willing and able to travel to us once approved. We do not ship or transport our animals and there is no exception to this rule.

*Most of our adoptable dogs are small, and they are never to be left outside alone, ever! We only rehome our dogs to adopters that plan to have them as inside dogs and part of the family! We do allow adopters with doggie doors, provided there is SECURE fencing and the dog is over 15 pounds. There is no exception to this rule!

*PREDATORS: IF THIS DOG IS UNDER 10 POUNDS, the dog is to be monitored and protected when outside at all times! PREDATOR-THREAT IS A REAL DANGER! For example, a hawk tried to pick up a Chihuahua owned by a friend visiting Ninna’s house
RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE VISITOR. Thankfully the visitor was watching the dog and the hawk was wrestled off of the Chihuahua but it did require an ER visit and she is was very lucky to survive. TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!

*NO SMALL CHILDREN!! As with almost all the dogs at NR2R, young children or a very active household is not recommended. Many of our dogs come to us BECAUSE of small children, thus we do not rehome our dogs to homes with babies or young children. KEEP THIS IN MIND IF YOU HAVE VISITING GRANDCHILDREN AS WELL! Even if the children are older, it would depend on the child AND the parent or parents.

*HOUSETRAINING: We do NOT guarantee that any of our adoptable dogs are housetrained. While most should be easily trained, keep in mind that they live in a rescue where they have access to the outdoors all day and are inside at night. Even if they were surrendered to us as housetrained, it doesn’t mean they will automatically be housetrained in your home. Housetraining them should be easy in the right home with time, patience, and consistency.

*KENNELING: We always recommend kenneling when you cannot supervise your dog. This helps with housetraining and any destructive tendencies until you get to know your knew addition.

*We do not guarantee the age, health or temperament of any of the dogs we rehome. Many of the dogs we take in come from animal control and rarely do we have histories and even when we do, many times the histories are inaccurate.

*Only adopters with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply. If you bring this pet into your heart and home, you will receive in return many years of love, companionship, and loyalty. That’s our guarantee.

Other notes: This pet is available for adoption through Ninna’s Road to Rescue, Benton, La. We are 501c3 non-profit organization. Our mission is to rescue primarily small-breed dogs and to re-home them into RESPONSIBLE and CARING forever homes. DOG APPLICATION LINK: http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application

Time may be of the essence if you are looking to adopt a specific animal. We do not reserve animals, unless and until we have approved your application, provided the animal is still available at the time we receive your application. The first APPROVED application we receive will be considered. We are NOT a first come, first serve rescue!! We adopt our rescues out to the RIGHT home, not just A home. Only responsible pet owners need apply.
Applying to adopt does NOT commit you to the adoption NOR does it guarantee the adoption.

CONTACT: Our adoptable pets are updated regularly, but if you want to check the availability of a pet... OR still have questions AFTER reading this profile, message us via our page. Please indicate the name when communicating with us.

Cats: yes

Health issues: none found.

Biography: We were contacted by a lady who needed help with three growing puppies. They were unable to take care of the parents and the puppies and contacted us for help. They've already had the father neutered and the mother will be next so this doesn't happen again, so PLEASE no negative comments. They did take really good care the pups... to include continuing deworming and three rounds of puppy vaccinations starting at six weeks. We gave them a booster on July 11th, so their puppy vaccinations are complete. We had them groomed soon after intake and they all three did great. Ideally, we are looking for homes for them that will provide them a stable, loving home with lots of socialization with other dogs and people so that they grow into well-adjusted, wonderful adult dogs. Socialization is SO IMPORTANT. We are looking for homes where likely the human will outlive the pup! Please keep in mind your age vs. the lifespan of the pup. These pups are wonderful and they are going to make some lucky family VERY happy!

PUPPIES!
Keep in mind, puppies teeth just like human babies and have little sharp toenails. They will also have behaviors that require training. Puppies will cry, chew, bite, mouth, nip, bark, destroy, dig, scratch, etc. The puppy phase lasts about 18 months (sometimes longer), so be sure you ARE READY for the commitment! Don't even think about applying if you have any doubts about raising a puppy... and don't expect children to take care of the puppy... because they won't! This needs to be an adult decision and an adult commitment.

POTTY TRAINING: A puppy can only hold their bladder for a short period of time based upon their age. If the puppy is 2 months old, they can hold their bladder for 2 hours; 3 months/3 hours; 4 months/ 4 hours, etc., up to 6 months of age. At about 6 months of age, this time frame stables out. Puppies are a 10-15 year commitment (sometimes longer). Please be sure you are prepared for the life of the puppy! In conclusion, if your puppy is in a responsible home that provides daily structure, training and socialization with people and other pets, your puppy will grow to be a well-adjusted and wonderful part of your family for many years to come.

COMMITMENT: Puppies are a 10-15 year commitment (sometimes longer). Please be sure you are prepared for the life of the puppy! SKUNK ADOPTED 7.01.2025! đŸ¶đŸ’™

Facebook video link with his foster: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/195tfHoZ4f/
You Tube video: https://youtube.com/shorts/DudzcH8uQdw?feature=share

FOR ADOPTION! READY TO LEAVE ON OR AFTER July 1, 2025! Taking applications NOW!
Note: Only those with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply.

INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY:
PLEASE read profile thoroughly BEFORE applying:
DOG APPLICATION LINK: http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application

Skunk (male)
Intake date: 6/14/2025
Breed: Shih Tzu/ Yorkie mix
Approx DOB 4/13/2025
Intake weight: 1.3 pounds
Current weight as of 6/26/25: 2.28 pounds
Size potential: Likely 10 pounds or under

Adoption fee and vetting: $450.00, which comes with $50 spay/neuter REBATE coupon redeemable once puppy is spayed/neutered no later than 6 months of age; includes age-appropriate vaccinations (at least two (SHE WILL NEED MORE!), plus Bordetella); deworming; microchipped; (Note: we were contacted by former owner that her puppy was very sick. We instructed her to take him directly to the ER clinic, suspecting parvo, but ultimately was diagnosed hypoglycemic: bill $1,000.)
(Note: Since we did spend over $1,000 on little Skunk, he would be considered a benefactor dog for himself.)

Good with other dogs: yes
Cats: yes

Health issues: none found.

Biography: Vicki, our VP, was contacted about this little guy by his owner who said he was very ill. She couldn't afford the ER clinic. She signed surrendering him to us and we had her deliver him to Valor Emergency Clinic. He was lethargic and weak. The good news is it was not parvo which we suspected. He was hypoglycemic, which is not uncommon for small-breed puppies. The ER kept him overnight, pumped him full of fluids and the following day Vicki picked him up to foster him so she could keep an eye on him. Since fostering him, he’s gained a pound and Vicki reports he is a playful, fun, sweet little puppy
but watch those toofers! It’s like getting a tattoo over and over again. Vicki is working on redirecting her little mouth to toys! Skunk is an innocent, happy little guy who is going to make someone VERY HAPPY for many years to come!

VACCINATIONS and PROTECTING YOUR PUPPY!
Your puppy has NOT been fully vaccinated! While with us, your puppy has been completely protected the entire time. Your puppy has not been outside of their protective puppy pen except to clean. IF your puppy got two (or more) rounds of vaccinations before leaving, then your puppy was released to be with the other non-quarantined dogs. It’s important to keep your puppy away from high-traffic stores or areas where there is a potential that there are unvaccinated dogs or areas where you know there were puppies that have had or have parvo. Parvo is a silent killer and is everywhere... so just like you would a newborn human baby... protect your puppy. Your puppy will require MORE vaccinations which will be discussed at the time of adoption. YOU MUST FOLLOW-UP WITH YOUR VET TO GET YOUR PUPPY ON A SCHEDULE! Parvo is everywhere and IT IS A KILLER OF PUPPIES! You WILL be required to SIGN a contract that you agree to continue the puppy vaccinations until your puppy has been fully inoculated. Be aware
 we will follow-up!

WHY SO MANY VACCINATIONS? Most people don’t understand why a puppy needs multiple puppy vaccinations so some people don’t go beyond the first set. This is a HUGE MISTAKE. We’ll explain: In the beginning, while nursing, the puppy receives ample immunity from their mother. Once weaned, they are susceptible to dangerous viruses such as parvo, the puppy killer, and distemper
among other things. At 6 weeks they should receive their first round of puppy vaccinations. Why isn’t this enough? Because you don’t know when the mother’s immunity is no longer effective and if they receive it while still with the mother’s immunity, it doesn’t do any good. This is WHY they need to continue with boosters. At some point one or more of those vaccinations will become their immunity. Don’t risk your puppy’s life! While some vets only do three sets, we recommend four sets. If you’ve ever had a puppy die of parvo
it is something you will never ever forget. (Keep in mind we are not veterinarians and cannot give advice, so don’t take our word for it
 talk to your licensed veterinarian.)

In conclusion, if your puppy is in a responsible home that provides daily structure, training and socialization with people and other pets, your puppy will grow to be a well-adjusted and wonderful part of your family for many years to come.

SPAY/NEUTER REBATE PROGRAM: Due to the age of this pet, he/she may not be spayed/neutered at the time of adoption. If this is the case, you will receive a $50 rebate coupon which will entitle you to a rebate of $50 once your pet is spayed/neutered and valid ONLY IF DONE ON OR BEFORE 6 MONTHS OF AGE! It is REQUIRED and part of our adoption contract that all unaltered pets be spayed/neutered no later than 6 months of age and we DO follow up!
