My favorite paint in the whole world goes back to him home tommarrow. He has been such a blast start to finish. Just completing 60 days under saddle and he walk trots and lopes balanced circles, has a huge stop, side passes, pivots his shoulders and hindquarters, collects, and gives to leg pressure like a champ. I’m so so proud of this one.
And I’m so happy I could give him a great start to his riding career.

Let’s talk about timing and reactions with a colt being started under saddle
The transition from being on the ground with them to the saddle can be, shocking.
Everything you have taught them to be okay with on the ground, you know have to transition in pieces when on them. Because it’s a whole new feeling for them. And if you can imagine being a horse, it can be pretty scary. That’s why I put so much time into desensitizing them, loud riders make quiet horses. And in the first clip, when a colt chooses flight as a response to something new, its something I’ll never react to in a defensive or confrontational way. The way I will approach this is with reassurance, repetition, and patience. He’s telling me this was scary and he wasn’t to sure about it, and we went back to the ground did lots of desensitizing, a little bit of ground driving and lots of repetitive flapping of the hands, stepping in the saddle, and touching all over. To let him know that it is okay, releasing pressure at the correct time is just as, if not more important in this process. He relaxes? I release. The outcome you search for will present itself pretty quickly if you pay attention to there feelings, and how they are thinking. if you jump on a colt and ride the buck out without preparation, your going to find it much harder to continue the training process/ make multiple holes that you’ll have to go back and fix in the future.
