FYI...

The Frederick County Health Department is seeking help from the public after a person was bit by an unknown dog at the Ballenger Creek Dog Park around 8:30 pm on August 22. The dog is described as large, white, and fluffy and was accompanied by two women and two boys.

Contact is needed to confirm the animal’s health and location so that it can be quarantined. The quarantine would be for 10 days and can occur in the owner’s home. The health department is not looking to take the pet away.

HE IS HOME! AFTER ALMOST 5 MONTHS! He was picked up by Animal Control, in the exact area that was heavily flyered. Someone had evidently been caring for him. Reminder: It is illegal (selfish and cruel) to keep a found pet! Call your local Animal Control.

And this…

We are in a heat advisory. Please keep your pets safe and review the following tips:
* Pets can dehydrate quickly, so keep plenty of fresh, clean water available.
* Make sure outside animals have access to shade and do not over exercise them.
*Know the symptoms of overheating in pets: excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse.
*Animal with flat faces such as Pugs, French Bulldogs and Persian cats are more susceptible to heat stroke.
*Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle unattended, the temperature can become deadly within minutes.
*Do not leave your pet unattended around a pool.
*Dogs with shaved coats need to be protected from sunburn.
*Do not let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Their bodies can heat up quickly absorbing heat from the road and their paw pads can burn.

🆘 We need your help! 🆘

This is Cole.

Cole and his siblings were born March 26 in one of our foster homes. As happens sometimes, and is always heartbreaking, two of his siblings didn’t thrive and sadly passed away within 2 weeks of their birth. Cole was the smallest kitten left and while his two remaining siblings thrived, he struggled, and was syringe fed for many weeks.

At 8 weeks old, he began to suffer from unexplained issues with digestion. His growth slowed because eating was uncomfortable, and he fell behind in his development.

During his struggle (and at times obvious pain and discomfort), Cole became a very observant, quiet, tolerant kitten. He's smart, gentle and loving, preferring a comforting, safe lap to almost anywhere.

After several consultations with our amazing vet team and a specialist, it’s been determined that Cole needs a very expensive procedure (cost is $4800) to hopefully make him the thriving happy kitten he so deserves to be. To date, in order to get to this diagnosis, we have spent over $2,000 in emergency care and vet fees.

As a rescue, we have approximately 140 kittens in foster care at the moment. While the expense of this procedure would always be staggering for us, the sheer volume of kittens we have rescued this crazy kitten season makes this amount feel even more insurmountable.

Please help with any donation you can and please share this post.

Kittens like Cole don’t ask to be born and they certainly don’t ask to be born sick. We are thankful he was born in a home and not in the wild where he had no chance of survival. But, it takes a big village and a lot of huge hearts to continue our mission of saving kittens like Cole.

“He (she) doesn’t….”
“She (he) won’t….”
“My dog escaped…”

What if we change our thinking to “I have not built a relationship with my dog where he (she) understands and respects boundaries?”

People so often put the blame on the dog but have not taken the time to communicate effectively through consistent and clear messages to the dog. When we communicate to a dog as though it is a human and not a canine, the dog is often put into a position to guess what words and actions mean rather than to know the use of the word for a singular action.

For example, “down” cues the action of the dog to lie on the belly with paws and legs on the floor. However, people will also often say “sit down” or “get down”. This blurs the image of the “down” command in the dog creating inconsistency and, therefore, confusion for the dog.

No one wants to work with a wish/washy leader or be in a relationship where the rules continually change and keep us guessing. It causes us to live in a state of anxiety, confusion, frustration, etc.

Setting and keeping clear guidelines with a dog not only builds trust, but, to not do so, is actually unfair and, depending on the situation, can be cruel. Boundaries help not only build relationship, but maintain safety for the dog.

Be consistent, clear, and fair. Please own the responsibility rather than placing the blame on the dog when not providing clarity.

Dogs are wonderful and can do so much! Let’s rise up in our communications with our dogs to bring out the best in both of us.

Helping Pets & Their People

Let’s Help Pets is a social forum managed by Conway Communications. I have publicized animal welfare non-profits in the Frederick County region since 2011. This page frequently shares fundraising posts on behalf of local non-profit organizations, but does not share fundraising posts for individuals, including - but not limited to - Go Fund Me campaigns. I can, however, direct individuals to programs that offer assistance, particularly if they are located in Frederick County.

A devoted foster, rescue and adoptive pet parent, I will always be a voice for animals and their advocates.

Thank you for visiting, following, and liking this page!
