Hi,
This is a copy of a post from The Dog Food Advisor website concerning Grain Free dog food. It asks as many questions as it answers, but it is all stuff that you should know about. If you can spare a couple of minutes, this is well worth your time to read.

The Dog Food Advisor
I’m terrible at making decisions, whether trivial or important.

With the trivial stuff, I just have to take a punt before my wife’s eyes roll so much they end up staring at the back of her skull.

But with the serious stuff, I often hesitate because there’s either too little or too much information to hand.

This is a problem for a lot of people when it comes to choosing dog food — a really important decision.

What’s healthy? What’s safe? What’s good value?

As we always say, no one dog food is best for every dog. That’s why we have our Best Dog Food lists.

One of the biggest areas of confusion is the debate around grain-free dog food and the alleged link to the heart condition Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM).

You can read about it here: FDA Investigating Potential Link Between Diet and Heart Disease in Dogs

News has emerged that a Missouri court has certified a class action lawsuit against Schell & Kampeter, Inc. — which does business as Diamond Pet Foods, Inc. — brought by dog parents who purchased Taste of the Wild Grain Free Dog Food from August 27, 2015, to June 21, 2024.

You can read the full news story here: Missouri Court Certifies Class Action Over Alleged Grain-Free Dog Food and DCM Link

This is the second class action suit related to DCM and grain-free dog food.

In February, KetoNatural Pet Foods filed a proposed class action lawsuit against Hill’s Pet Nutrition, alleging that Hill’s and a group of veterinarians conspired to manipulate the FDA into examining a potential link between increased risk of DCM and certain grain-free dog foods.

These actions are further pieces in a very disjointed and incomplete jigsaw that confuses dog parents. This is what DFA’s nutritionist, Laura Ward, has said on the subject:

“There have been numerous studies researching the effects of grain and grain-free dog foods on heart health. However, to date, there have been no proven links seen between grain or grain-free diets and DCM.

“As there is no evidence to suggest there are advantages or disadvantages to grain or grain-free options, we continue to rate and recommend both on DFA. We will, of course, continue to monitor investigations around this topic.

“We understand that pet parents have real concerns and that some vets are convinced there is a link between diet and cardiomyopathy. However, we have a responsibility to report on concrete facts.”

We would love to be able to give people definitive advice on this and ease your concerns but it’s impossible. (Use of the term “grain-free” is particularly unhelpful — there is no suggestion that a lack of grain has any connection with DCM, but rather the inclusion of other ingredients.)

But rest assured, we will keep you up to date with any relevant and substantial news on the matter.

Until next time,
Andrew

We are having a mini family reunion this week. Here are puppies Verdi on the left, mother Rebel then Mac and Piper, with Storey in front. Born in September, the pups are five months old now. Things are just a bit crazy with four busy puppies, but thankfully our Rebel kids are a pretty calm bunch.

We are pleased to announce the arrival of our latest litter. Our girl Keltie (Labyrinth's Keltic Spirit) has just delivered nine puppies. We have a range of colours in the pups from medium gold to dark red. With a large litter like this we now have a limited number of reservations available for male or female puppies if you are interested.

Keltie is a sweet and gentle girl with a lovely rich reddish coat. Her pedigree includes many of our outstanding dogs. She is a sister to our Rebel, with Tartan, Salsa, Gordon and McDuff in her pedigree.

The father of the litter is Max (Labyrinth's Take it to the Max), a medium gold coloured boy and a great stud for us. His background includes our girls Tory, Kismet, Tazz and an outcross to Luke, Canadian Grand Champion Goodtimes Carry the Torch to Aviemore, an international stud dog.

This is the third and last litter from Keltie and Max, their first two litters produced lovely, sweet pups for us.

These puppies were born January 20th and will be ready to go home starting March 15, 2024.

Please contact us through email if you wish to inquire about this litter: [email protected]

Raising puppies is challenging, the research for the best breeding, the worries for a healthy pregnancy, the stress of whelping, the sorrow of loosing a puppy, and the hard work to raise the best possible puppy. This smile is the thing that makes it all worthwhile.

We are thrilled to introduce Story, Labyrinth's Last Chapter.

Story is a Rebel and Rogun daughter, born September 12th and now the newest member of the Labyrinth clan. She is a bright and happy little girl, full of curiosity and energy, and quickly learning to terrorize the older girls.

Big Congratulations to our friend and fellow Golden breeder Sharon Arnaud {Anam Cara Kennels}. With a bit of help from Labyrinth's Take it to the Max, the sire, her girl Indie certainly took it to the max with her litter of eleven puppies. She is doing well and has recovered from her labour, and is taking great care of her pups. With this many in the litter, there are bound to be some available. The litter will be going home around the end of November. Sharon can be reached through her page. https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=anum%20cara%20kennels
She can also be reached at this email address or phone number. [email protected] 289-264-5375.
Let her know we referred you.

We know from our own breedings that Max produces some very nice pups, and Indie is turning out to be a great mom. The pups should range from blond to medium gold in colour, although the temperament and personality is what really makes Goldens such wonderful dogs.

Here are some recent photos of Rogun. He is one of our stud dogs that sired a litter with a pretty girl from Aviemore Goldens. I think he got dressed up for these pictures, but he's a handsome boy any way you look at it.
There may still be reservations available from this litter with pups going home in mid September.

Here are some more pictures of Rogun, (Labyrinth's Son of a Gunn) His lines go back to Hamish and Sneakers, then to Quila and Harper. Like his dad, Rogun is a sweet loveable boy and has been active in public school visitations. He lives with a family that includes public school kids and is great with all ages of kids. This is his second litter and it looks like he has a busy career ahead of him.

We have been asked for more pictures of the Labyrinth boys that have been busy with the girls at Aviemore Goldens. Here is Max.

Max (Labyrinth's Take It To The Max) is a god looking boy, but more importantly, he has a great temperament. He is active, but easy to control and lives with his own son and a wonderful young lady in Peterborough. He has sired several litters of puppies over the last three years and produced some great pups, including one son (Quinn) who now has his clearances and is ready to start his own career as a stud.
Max's lines include Virginia's outstanding boy Luke, and our girls Tory, Kismet and Roxy.

Our friend and fellow Golden breeder (Aviemore Goldens) has two beautiful litters with pups ready to go home in mid September. The fathers of the litters are two Labyrinth boys we have used for stud, Max and Rogun so we are expecting to see some very nice kids from these breedings.

QUILLA
Labyrinth's Quilla Sunrise Spirit
17 July 2009 to 21 April 2023

We are very sad to let you know that last Friday our hearts were broken when we unexpectedly had to say goodbye to our wonderful old girl Quilla. She was a happy and seemingly healthy 14 year old girl who still enjoyed our long daily walks, happily tolerated the young dogs in the house and loved to be near us. She had the best day on Thursday – ate her meals with enthusiasm and was happily trotting along behind everyone on our afternoon walk. But, late that evening she suffered a sudden and devastating stroke. She passed peacefully and quietly on Friday with both of us by her side.
Quilla was a beautiful and gentle girl who gave us four litters of awesome puppies. Who, even after she was spayed, still loved to sit in the middle of the puppy pen and give her scary teeth- baring snarl when puppies got out of line. She would let them crawl over and around her and then if they got too rough or disrespectful, she didn't hesitate to tell them off. She never hurt them, maybe scared them, but taught them important life lessons.
Quilla was also a great people dog, always happy to meet new families, travel to new places and have great doggie adventures. She would greet strangers with a wagging tail and a big toothy grin but was always happiest to be with us. And if she had her way, no empty plate would ever go unlicked. At 12 years of age she was diagnosed with a Mast Cell tumour just above her tail, but surgery cured that and she recovered quickly, keeping her tail intact.

Quilla's lines were from some of our great girls of the past, Kelly, Legacy, Tazz, Demi and right back to our foundation girl Spirit. She and her brother Gordon (the barrier breaking Court Service Dog) were the last of their litter, and Gordon is now the sole survivor. They both carried on the best traits of our Labyrinth dogs with their affectionate personalities, intelligence and great temperaments.

Quilla's constant presence in our home, her companionship on our walks and her gentle playful nature are sorely missed already.

Time for an update on our puppy situation. For those of you who have been waiting patiently, we expect to have two litters going home in March or April 2023. We are also planning for more pups later next summer. If you are interested, let us know. The best way to reach us is by email, [email protected]

This is the age where pups learn to be gentle with their mouth. When play gets too rough they are either shunned or attacked in return. Little Rebel Red is getting bullied by here brother Green.
