Getting a look at a Brittany for the first time. Trying to bulletproof that honor. #wegotyourback #gspoftheday #brittanyspaniel #upland #projectupland
Not every training session is a winner. I was having issues with my bird launcher. I went to hit it right before I called Mavis to whoa. I’m pretty confident if the bird would’ve flushed she would’ve been locked in. She was getting bored with the lack of flapping wings. This was the second mishap with pigeons for the day! I wish my bird launchers were as dependable as the Honor Dogs Backing Dummy!
One positive to take, I wasn’t sure what Mavis would think of the liver dog, and it got her attention just fine. The unique position of the silhouette wasn’t a problem either. We’ve got work to do, but really, this was her second round of backing in 5 months, so I was pleased.
So here’s a look at the English Pointer Honor Dogs in action. Mavis has never worked with an English Pointer before, and it’s also been about 5 months since we’ve done any formal steadiness or backing sessions. Not a bad little session, and you don’t see it here, but our pigeon didn’t want to cooperate. He ended up landing 5yds from the launcher. It was less than ideal, but Mavis held strong, breaking only once, and just taking one little step. Otherwise, she did great given the circumstances.
