Falling Branches Urban Homestead Our family laboratory - a place to learn and experiment as we blaze a path toward independence and a sustainable future.

We want to become more self-sufficient as we inch toward retirement, and at the same time focus on more family-friendly activities that offer opportunities for exercise, creativity and togetherness. We have spent several years watching and learning as much about permaculture, organic gardening, upcycling, small farming, etc. as we could, and now are ready to give it go ourselves. We will start off small and make lots of mistakes along the way, but hopefully be much better for the experience.

I love my little raised bed garden and daily harvests. Sadly, it is time to pull a few things up, move some to the greenhouse, and keep harvesting others.

Morning baskets…. What a way to start each day! Wish I had taken pics of all the morning harvests.

Today we caged all of our pepper plants (21 so far!), and built a cattle panel fence trellis for our blackberries. Tomorrow we will add a second for the honeysuckle.

Added another arch trellis for some squash and pumpkins.

This morning’s harvest…. We have never planted lettuce before, but it seems to be our best garden yield this year with several harvests. Great flavor! We will definitely make sure that it is part of our garden from now on.

Second year for the mint and it’s just exploded! You wouldn’t know it, but there are some companion plants buried in that mess - I think they’re just going to need a new home since the mint is so greedy. Smells amazing every morning when we water.

We are learning that gardening in Wyoming is definitely different than in the South. While lots of my friends and family from various parts of the South are canning green beans and pickles while having garden fresh tomatoes in their salads, I am totally excited to have picked some of our first strawberries, spinach, mint, rhubarb and basil.
The garden plants are coming along nicely with some blooms here and there and a few veggies just waiting to “grow up” for harvest!
