In addition to helping animals, an essential part of the veterinary profession is protecting and improving the health of people and their communities, according to the announcement for World Veterinary Day 2024.

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) and Health for Animals announced that this year’s theme is “Veterinarians are essential health workers.” The 2024 World Veterinary Day will be held on April 27 and is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of veterinarians to the health of animals, people, and the environment.

“Veterinarians’ competencies must be regarded as an essential and integral part of health at large,” according to this year’s award announcement. “The application of veterinary science contributes not only to animal health and well-being but also to human’s physical, mental and social wellbeing.”

Our senior horses can greatly benefit from frequent and thorough physical exams as they age.

Many of them become more susceptible to dental disease and other chronic infections due to waning immunity.
We recommend comprehensive lab work to evaluate their overall health as well as their metabolic/Cushing’s status.

Many horses develop arthritis over the course of their life and may experience chronic pain that can make normal daily activities such as laying down more challenging.
After running comprehensive lab work to assess kidney function, we can evaluate whether or not a dose of daily pain medication would be an appropriate option.

It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Shannon Hendrickson. She was an incredibly kind and caring person and an integral part of the horse community. Our condolences go out to her family, friends & SWF family. 💕

A message from Tracy:

I never imagined I would be writing this message. We have lost the heart of our barn. Today, November 4th, Shannon passed away.

We are all in shock. We appreciate that there will be many questions, but we must ask that you hold off on them for now and give Shannon’s family, SWF staff, and myself time to process this news and determine how best to move forward.
