True Blue for Maggie Lou Educating our community about Type 1 Diabetes & our childs Diabetic Alert Dog Type 1 is VERY different from the more common Type 2 Diabetes.

My name is Maggie Lou Hughes I am 11 years old & I was diagnosed with a disease in 2011, Type 1 Diabetes. It is an autoimmune disease that attacks & kills the good cells in our Pancreas that make insulin. The kind I have won't ever go away & I have to take a life saving medicine many times everyday for the rest of my life. T1D makes my blood sugar go too high & too low everyday. I have to prick my

fingers about 10-12 times a day to check my blood & see if I am at a safe number. We are trying to raise money for all the things we need to take care of me. An example of one of the things we are fundraising for is my Diabetic Alert Dog ("DAD") that will help keep me safe. A DAD will alert us when my blood sugar is about to go too high or too low. When I go low I feel terrible, it makes me get sweaty, shaky, confused and feel yucky. Low blood sugar is an emergency & I have to eat sugar right away. If I don't I can have seizures & go into a coma. When my blood sugar goes too high I get a headache, feel shaky, angry, confused & my stomach hurts. A Diabetic Alert Dog is trained to tell me before either of those happen so we can get what I need right away. Sometimes I'm nervous & scared at bedtime because I know that blood sugar lowers when we sleep & I'm scared about going too low. I don't wake up on my own when I go low. My mom & dad take turns pricking my finger every night while I sleep to make sure I am safe. Sometimes they have to make me wake up & drink juice & eat snacks when my blood sugar isn't safe. If I had an alert dog I wouldn't have to worry so much and neither would my family. I would also be healthier because my body probably wouldn't have to go through a low or high. Also I wouldn't have to go through all the symptoms so I would feel better and won't have to eat snacks as much. We have to have so many things to manage my disease. I have to have insulin every single day. I'm using an insulin pump right now. We hope people will donate for my Alert Dog or help us if you have a fundraiser we can do. Please share my page along because somebody you know might want to help me. Donations for my service dog can be made online at www.sdwr.org
After donating you will receive a confirmation email requesting you confirm my name! If you want to talk to us you can ask my mom or dad. If you post me note on this page I can answer you! Thank you
