As a wildlife rehabber, you’re never quite sure what you will encounter. This little sweetie had limited use of her arm due to a neurological issue. She couldn’t bend her elbow or wrist properly… couldn’t grip to climb or hold food. After months of physical therapy with massage and range of motion exercises, she gained use of that arm and was able to be released! I’m always willing to try and this is why! 💜💜

This cute little Mississippi Kite was in the middle of the road with a bloody, broken wing. He was stabilized, then transferred over to Paws and Claws Wildlife Rehabilitation to continue his care. Hopefully, his wing will heal in time to release for migration. Kites migrate early and start their journey to South America in August & September.

Get well little Buddy!

Anyone else felt like this today? 😬

You’ll notice his ears are red. I like to mark their ears with nontoxic kids markers so I can tell them apart and accurately track their weight.

Some of my opossum kids acclimating to life outside. Once they are about 2.5 - 3lbs, they'll be released in a safe spot where they can begin their lives of freedom. For now, they are learning how to be opossums by foraging for their food, making dens & climbing. 💜💜

My, what big beautiful ears you have! 🧡🧡 Although she battled a car and the pavement in some way, and she’s been battling a cold, she’s quite the fighter and has been the perfect little angel.

Someone busted out of the hospital today! She’s on confinement while her leg heals, but it doesn’t look like she minds. 🧡 She’ll go back for a checkup next week, but so far so good. Her vet bill has been covered, so thank you everyone! She said she’s happy that so many people care about her. ☺️

It’s been busy here lately, and not just with wildlife. When any kind of animal is in trouble, I’m not one to turn a blind eye. This little kitten was on the side of the highway while cars zoomed by and just ignored her. She was very injured, but very much still alive. I was able to call upon a finder I had previously helped with some bunnies who happened to live nearby where she was laying and suffering. Morgan jumped into action… located her, found that she was still alive and rushed her to my vet. Thankfully, her prognosis is good, though she has a greenstick fracture in her tibia and lots of swelling around her sweet little face. She’s resting comfortably at the clinic, no doubt exhausted from her frightening, painful ordeal. Despite that, her little motor was running the whole time when I went to check on her.

Morgan named her Falafel due to her little orange spots. She also has a heart on her back. 🧡

If you’d like to help with little Falafel’s care, you can donate here:

Bunny release day!

Cottontails are new territory for me. I’ve always been super scared to rehab them, because they are quite fragile and don’t always do so well in a rehab setting. But, when you surround yourself with great mentors who are willing to share their knowledge and guide you, great things happen! Two of these littles had their mommy and siblings killed by a dog, and the other was caught by a cat. Thanks to Jackie Moore for helping me along the way and bestowing her many years of bunny rehab knowledge on me, they are getting the chance to start their new, free lives in a beautiful place.

Happy lives little ones! Go make lots of babies! 🐰🐰💜💜

When you see your littles multiple times everyday, sometimes you don’t realize how much they’ve actually grown! These kids just got upgraded to a double story enclosure, so they’ve been having quite the blast exploring around.

TEXAS PEEPS! Time to clean your feeders and bird baths. Several doves in Texas have tested positive for Trichomoniasis, which is an infectious disease caused by a protozoan parasite.

You can read more about Trichomoniasis and how to protect your backyard wildlife here: https://tpwd.texas.gov/newsmedia/releases/?req=20240415a&fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2VyrPfI_tewz1TFMJA1LtCU9d0YlC2MSovKfxm1esGH5Zvz4pFMetvV9E_aem_ATLKTkj2raMtuBDBrZQg0Z5IpjAiHCw3q2MAqRJx1EaU3GbryVT_ZxSNjGaY-d2j4jeslkhcFVnBsvT_Ns-xqasu

YES, THIS! 👇Feeding orphaned wildlife the wrong food, using the improper technique or while cold can be very detrimental... sometimes to the point where we aren't able to save them. If you find injured or orphaned wildlife, please contact a licensed rehabber as soon as you can while providing warmth to give them the best possible chance.

The worst diarrhea we see in wildlife rehab? For us, it’s actually not parvo, giardia, salmonella, or any other infection. It’s newborn baby animals who were fed milk by their finders.

Cow’s milk, goat’s milk, and human breast milk don’t have the correct nutritional profile for any baby animal that lives in North America. Each of them will have far too much of some nutrients and far too little of others. When the ratios of fats, proteins, sugars, electrolytes, and total solid contents are “off,” and when these babies are introduced to strange proteins their bodies weren’t meant to digest, their little tummies just can’t handle it. They develop gas, bloating, and severe diarrhea. While we can usually treat these problems and turn things around, some of the youngsters don’t make it.

Most of the time, there are other good reasons not to feed an orphan animal, too: a truly orphaned baby animal is almost always dehydrated and cold. In this state, their bodies cannot digest solid food (even the solids found naturally in their own mothers’ milk). An orphaned baby animal always needs to be warmed and appropriately hydrated long before it is ready for milk of any kind.

We know you want to help. We really do, and we appreciate anyone who cares enough to help a wild baby animal in need! But if you’ve found an orphan baby animal who needs help, please resist the urge to give it anything to eat or drink. Provide it with an external source of warmth and keep it in a dark and quiet place until you are able to find a rehabilitator.

When you’ve been tube feeding for weeks, this is cause for celebration! 😆
