Dogs2Foster UK was founded by Jo Brewer following the loss of two of her own rescue dogs. “We had always re-homed rescue animals as a family, in fact, I can’t recall us ever buying a pet. When we lost our beloved dogs in a short space of time, we were completely devastated and lost without them. Home just didn’t feel like home any more so, we decided to re-home another dog/dogs which we assumed would be quite straight forward!
We spent most evenings for two months completing endless dog adoption forms through various charities large and small for dogs that needed a good home who we thought we’d be a perfect match for. These were all wealthy charities, the sort we donated to for decades - obviously they could afford the best marketing managers, but when it came to actually adopting from them, they didn’t even reply to us!
I had my own business, we owned our own home, had a large secure garden, I was able to work around the dog’s routine to ensure it was not left for more than a few hours, I could take the dog to work, we were experienced dog owners, and we were financially stable. Our son was five years old at the time, he was very intelligent around dogs, he’d always lived with them and knew ‘the rules’ of respecting and owning a dog.
After applying to re-home at least thirty dogs and each application taking several hours, some of the rescues never even responded to us and the ones that did turned us down because we had a young child, or some of the dogs were no longer available but were still advertised. It was a depressing and frustrating experience. Here we were, desperate to give a dog/dogs a wonderful home and we couldn’t find one for love nor money. We weren't alone, our dog owning friends who used to walk with us had had exactly the same frustrating experience when they’d tried to adopt!
I eventually found a dog rescue in the Midlands and wanted to adopt two of their dogs who unknown to me at the time were Spanish dogs, this was a whole new experience but geography wasn’t going to stand in my way, we adopted both - Pippa, a pure white Labrador cross with the most loving nature you could wish for and Nacho, an ex-hunting Pointer who had been left for dead, he was covered in scars BUT the most wonderful, gentle boy you could ever meet and both Pip and Nacho were the gentlest of dogs with our young son, in fact they were inseparable, when our son was unwell, Pip and Nacho never left his side. Please see Nacho’s story on our website at www.dogs2fosteruk.org Nacho very sadly passed away two years later after a courageous fight with cancer, our beautiful boy remains in our thoughts every day in our work to help dogs just like him. As any loving dog owner knows, you never get over losing your dogs, you just try and keep the your memories alive by helping more dogs.
I volunteered as a home-checker, and was a charity co-ordinator as well, so I firmly believed I had the experience to REALLY help dogs in need buy matching the right dog with the right home, I had worked in my previous profession and business with people for 25 years so I had a pretty good understanding of people, and dogs are not too different, just easier! I studied advanced canine behaviour and coupled the skills I learnt from my many years working in children and families fostering services.
I wanted to create a simpler arena for people to adopt dogs in need BUT, I also wanted to prevent dogs potentially being abandoned or given up to shelter in the first instance, which is why we help dog owners who have made a wrong choice or had a change in circumstances and can no longer care for their dogs. This may include homelessness, redundancy, wrong breed/owner, illness, bereavement etc.
We are here to try and help as many dogs and owner’s as possible, its that simple! If we can’t help, we try our very best to point you in the right direction.
We are working (with limited volunteers) to build the very first Dog Sanctuary in the New Forest. Our beautiful surroundings are the most perfect place for dogs in need to recover from trauma and abuse. In fact, it saddens me to feel that in the New Forest, one in four households own dogs and yet we have such little support for our project. I grew up on a small holding in Brockenhurst, nowhere is more perfect for a sanctuary than the New Forest. If you really want to help, please support our project.
In times like this, wouldn’t it be wonderful for us all to have a sanctuary with the dogs where we can grab a cuppa, watch the dogs progress in training, attend events with your dog(s), feel at peace and remember our loved and lost canine friends - this is how the sanctuary would be, a place for all animal lovers, all ages, but most importantly surrounded by wonderful dogs who need our help!
