How does an 8 month puppy not have one single application?! Chelsea came to us from a local animal control as a stray. She was found abandoned with her siblings in a forest preserve. Chelsea loves other dogs and enjoys playing with her foster brothers! She is a bit shy and would benefit from confidence building so she can lean the world isn’t so scary! Chelsea loves treats, belly rubs, and being with her people. She has made great strides with crate training. If interested in this sable cutie, apply at www.gsrescue1.org

Ginny may have started out at a disadvantage, but she is perfect in every way. Part deer with her long legs she is somehow graceful but clumsy at the same time. Ginny gets along great with everyone! She is being fostered with 3 other German Shepherds, a Chihuahua and cats. She's met adults, teens, kids and babies and loves to have options on who she gets to snuggle with.
She still likes to get naps in after her romps around the yard and walks. Ginny is working on leash manners, shes catching on quick with basic commands (sit, lay, and down). Ginny is learning to like her crate, and sleeps in it at night with no issues. Ginny is a happy little girl and would make a great addition to any family. She was born May of 2024 and will be on the smaller side full grown. If interested in adopting Ginny, apply at www.gsrescue1.org

Our sweet Princess, now Empress, has been adopted! She came to us confiscated as part of a cruelty investigation in August. She was very shy and shut down in the shelter, but Luckily Kaylee and Tyler agreed to take her in. During the lasf few months, she has truly blossomed and gained a lot of confidence. Kaylee and Tyler have been so patient with her as she has adjusted to her new life, and decided she was already home! Congratulations Empress!!!

KJ didn’t find her forever home at Adoptapalooza, and sadly her foster can no longer keep her. We don’t understand how this wonderful girl isn’t adopted! She will be 3 next month and weighs about 60 lbs. KJ is good with other dogs (though maybe not small ones) and children. She knows some basics but would benefit from training class. KJ does have allergies which are well controlled with cytopoint injections. She enjoys car rides and being with her people. If interested in this beautiful girl, apply at www.gsrescue1.org

💫 Everett update 💫

We continue to conduct diagnostics for Everett to figure out what is causing his regurgitation and hyper salavation issues. Everett ended up developing aspiration pneumonia due to all of the regurgitation, despite the medication he is on. Luckily the vets at UW Madison quickly noticed his bloodwork was off and chest X-rays confirmed their suspicions. Upon his initial evaluation, he seemed to be painful in his jaw, favoring one side of his mouth. In order to rule out any dental issues or abnormalities, we had a CT scan conducted as previously mentioned. While under anesthesia, he also had an endoscopy performed. It was noted his esophagus had an increased amount of salivation, but no signs of Mega-E or any issues with his stomach. His CT scan was normal, which ruled out any jaw or dental issues.

So Everett made another trip back to Madison, where a swallow study was conducted, along with more bloodwork and chest X-rays. The good news is Everett’s X-rays were clear, so no more pneumonia! He has gained some weight and is up to 47 lbs, though still emaciated. During the study, abnormalities with the way Everett is swallowing his food were observed. At this time, Dr. Roche suspects Everett may have a disease called myasthenia gravis. We sent out bloodwork yesterday, and hope to have an answer in the next 5-7 days.

As everyone can imagine, all of these diagnostics, medications, and special diet is extremely expensive. We appreciate any donation to help cover the continued costs for Everett. Once we have the bloodwork and other testing back, we will update everyone!

Little Everett and GSR thanks you all 🩵

Meet Tia! This adorable girl was found as a stray in the south suburbs. Tia is about a year old and weighs approximately 50 lbs. She is very sweet and loves her people! When she first arrived to her foster home, it didn’t seem like she had much exposure to inside life. Tia now can use stairs, goes outside for potty breaks, and understands what a dog bed is! She does have prey drive and will pull on leash for squirrels and other small animals. Tia was definitely an outside dog and loves her backyard. She is able to hold her bladder for about 6 hours right now and is doing well alerting her foster mom when it is time to go out. Though she is smaller, she is a fiesty girl that will push her way to get attention. She is dog friendly, just know she wants to be the boss! Tia seems to really like kids when she sees them on walks, but hasn’t been formerly introduced. She is an intelligent pup and would do great in training classes. If interested in this sweet girl, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if your application is on file.

Chelsea is a sweet young sable female that is looking for her forever family! She is estimated to be between 7-9 months old and is shy at first but is quickly won over with treats and a soft voice. Chelsea can be a bit timid about her head, but doesn't say no to scratches and pets.

Chelsea's perfect home has a confident sibling willing to show her the ropes of being a dog and will be patient with her slow to warm up process. Chelsea has three foster brothers she likes to chase around the yard and entertain with her puppy antics. Chelsea's perfect family understands that she's still a baby learning the world and will need time to decompress in her new home and the world can be a little scary sometimes. Chelsea would benefit from positive training because she can be a pushy puppy once settled in. Chelsea is working on her potty and crate training with her foster family and is learning that outside isn't so scary. Chelsea is extremely food motivated and is very eager to please.

If interested in fostering or adopting Chelsea, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if you have an application on file

First, thank you everyone for all of your support for Everett and we appreciate your patience awaiting an update! We were lucky enough to get Everett in on a cancellation appointment at UW Madison to see internal medicine. Every clinic in the Chicagoland area was booked up for weeks, so we are very thankful his foster mom made the trip! Some positive news is Everett remains stable enough that he has not needed to be hospitalized again. Unfortunately, we don’t have answers as to why Everett is so thin, regurgitating, and hyper salivating. We repeated bloodwork, did another ultrasound, tested for EPI which was negative, and completed an ACTH stim test to rule out Addisons disease. Here is what we do know this far — Everett’s bloodwork indicates he’s anemic and has a potential GI bleed, so he’s being treated for that along with suspected esophagitis. Upon exam, his salivary gland was enlarged and he avoided eating on the one side of his mouth and dropping food. Next steps would be a CT scan which is scheduled for Wednesday. The scan will help us determine if there’s something causing his jaw pain/reluctance to eat on his one side. It’s possible there’s a root issue with a tooth, a foreign body, or TMJ. As anyone can imagine, his medical bills are mounting, but we’re committed to getting this little guy better. We appreciate the continued support and any donations towards his medical expenses! We will update this week following his CT scan.

Another week, another batch of GSDs in need. Please considering fostering! We provide food and medical (with use of our vets), you provide a temporary home! Most dogs are strays, so we have limited information (not typically known if ok with cats or kids). We require foster homes to be within two hours of Chicago. If you want to help us by fostering, please fill out the application on our website at www.gsrescue1.org

Our Story

GSR (based in Chicago with a focus on Chicago and the immediate surrounding suburbs) is always willing to provide medical care due to donations from special people who sponsor special needs dogs and donate to assist our general rescue efforts of our favorite breed. German Shepherd Rescue rescues dogs from high kill shelters mainly in Illinois. We do help dogs in NW Indiana, Southern WI and even MI when we have transportation to aid in their rescue and transport to us. Meet & Greet Events: A Meet & Greet event is where you can meet GSR and find out more about dogs that are available for foster/adoption. We set up private meetings at this time to meet our dogs in foster care. GSR will be at Petsmart in Northbrook, IL on the 1st Saturday of the month. The 3rd or 4th Sunday of each month is scheduled at Petsmart in Schaumburg, IL.
