Meet Lyra, the German Shepherd puppy with a heart of gold! At just 9 weeks old, this little dynamo is already showing off her smarts and eagerness to learn. Lyra isn't just a quick learner; she's also wonderfully affectionate and social. Whether it's with people or other animals, Lyra is a social butterfly who gets along splendidly with her foster siblings.

Housebreaking? No problem—Lyra is catching on very quickly! When she's out and about, she loves meeting new people and often tries to follow them as they walk away. Her playful spirit shines through her love for kids, playing tug, chasing a ball, and chewing on bones. And did we mention her beautiful, long coat? Lyra truly has it all—beauty, brains, and personality.

If you're looking for a loyal companion who will bring joy and love into your home, Lyra is the one for you. She’s ready to meet her forever family and shower them with affection and endless fun!

FOSTER NEEDED

Milo was rescued from CACC and and now he’s in boarding since his foster backed out. He is neutered, 2 years old approximately and has some skin issues going on which means boarding is no place to heal. Milo is large dog friendly, has not been cat tested.

With his skin issues he’s a bit sensitive understandably so no young kids. He appears housebroken and does fine in the car and in a crate.

Milo was microchipped but sadly his family never reclaimed him. We hope someone can step up and help this boy recover.

Apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email applications .org if you have an application on file

Puppy Aidan was found as a stray with no microchip or tags. He’s approximately 5 months old (still losing some baby teeth) and ready for his forever home! Aidan is currently fostered with other dogs, but hasn’t been around cats. He is a smart boy and catches onto training quickly. Aidan likes his dog bed/cot and loves to cuddle, like any puppy he will require training.

If interested in adopting Aidan, apply at www.gsrescue1.org

If you are looking for a young, beautiful, sweet and energetic companion, Beatrice is your girl! Approximately 1 year old, spayed and up to date on vaccines, she was found as a stray and was at Will County Animal control before being rescued by GSR. She was originally quite shy and nervous but is now coming out of her shell in a loving foster home. She adores her big dog foster brother, a 5 year old Kuvasz, but can be a little much for him at times although she is respectful of his cues. She is good around kids so far but would probably be better with teens as she is still a little mouthy and rough while playing. She is crated and calms down immediately when the cover is put over it and seems to feel safe there. She sleeps in the crate all night and goes potty outside if taken right out first thing in the morning. She is learning a few things like sit and off — is smart and will learn quickly with proper training. She loves to have her ears rubbed! Beatrice is very treat motivated (but needs to learn to take them a little more gently). With some confidence and training, this girl will blossom into a lovely companion!

Floyd was rescued from Will County AC after being found stray. He’s an energetic, playful boy in need of a foster or adoptive home. Floyd is about 2 years old, He is a busy bee and would benefit from an active shepherd experienced household. Floyd would do best as an only dog so he can get the attention and training he needs to thrive! He is housebroken and crate trained. His ideal home will have a fenced yard and children should be 15+

If interested in fostering or adopting Floyd, please apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if you have an app on file

Meet Tiny! She was surrendered to CACC with another GSD when the owners could no longer care for them. Tiny was so scared that she escaped from her owners and trapped 3 days later by animal control. Thankfully our foster Eileen stepped up to take her in and she’s thriving now!

Tiny is a young girl about a year old and 50 lbs. she loves to go for walks and dances when it’s time! She walks well on leash and is excited when she sees dogs and kids. It appears Tiny may have had a litter before coming to GSR, but no more puppies for her! She loves to hangout on the sofa with her foster mom. Tiny is a picky eater and tends to like to graze. We think she could be ok with a dog savvy cat. She will require a home with a completely fenced in yard.

Due to no fault of her own, Elsa needs a new foster home. Elsa came to us from Will county animal control as a stray. We think she was used as a breeding mom and dumped when she was no longer needed. Elsa is a very sweet and friendly girl. She is a big girl weighing in at almost 85 pounds. Elsa sadly tested positive for heart worms and will need a foster home that can continue her treatment. All costs will be covered by GSR with the use of one of our vet partners.

Elsa is estimated to be 3-4 years old, spayed, and updated on vaccines. She is not a fan of being crated so this is something her foster will need to work on. Elsa would need to meet any other dogs in a foster home as she can be selective. Her dog test video is in comments.

If you can help this sweet beautiful girl, please apply at www.gsrescue1.org

Happy new year everyone! For those of you who don’t know me my name is Brandy, one of GSRs directors. We’ve been a bit behind on social media postings as we have a new addition to the pack! My daughter Clara was born 12/18 and is a little sister to alumni Mason and Fiona.

Looking back on 2024, I’m so happy to share we ended the year with 120 adoptions! GSR continues to grow and we’re all so proud of what we accomplished. This was a record year of adoptions for us! 2025 has already started off with a new rescue Deliliah from CACC.

We want to thank all of our fosters, donors, volunteers, and adopters. Without them, we are not able to help as many GSDs as we do. We’re looking forward to another great year!

GSR would love to see your GSDs enjoying the holidays! Bring on the photos!!!

Meet Rambo – Your Future Best Friend!

Rambo is a young, energetic pup with a heart of gold! At just one year old, he's still very much a playful puppy. Rambo is incredibly smart and already knows some basic commands, like "sit," "paw," and "wait." He does well waiting patiently for treats, meals, and outdoor adventures, showing that he’s eager to please and loves to learn.

He’s a big fan of toys—especially balls! But be warned, he needs tough, durable toys because he’s a powerhouse when it comes to playtime and can easily destroy softer ones.

Rambo is a loving, affectionate dog who has no idea how big he is! He will thrive in a home where someone has the time and energy to match his enthusiasm for life.

Rambo is dog friendly and fostered with 2 other GSDs. He has not been around cats or small dogs.

If you’re looking for an intelligent, active companion who will keep you on your toes and shower you with love, Rambo could be the perfect fit for your family. We can’t wait to see him find the loving home he deserves!

If interested in adopting Rambo, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected]

*****ADOPTED****

Smart and super-snuggly. That's Frankie. He's young, energetic, and wants to please. Frankie loves toys, especially balls. He'll bring them right back!

Frankie is social with other dogs and loves meeting new people (maybe a little too much-- we're working on calmer introductions).
He is enthusiastic, but settles down while his foster dad does desk work. He's currently living with a senior dog, who tolerates him, but he would likely enjoy a younger canine playmate.
Like any other young German Shepherd, Frankie needs an experienced person to teach him good manners. He doesn't know much about leash walking, but is treat-motivated and likely to learn fast. He dislikes being crated, but is learning it's not the end of the world to spend a bit of time there. Frankie is an athletic dog. He might be a good fit for agility work. Mostly, though, Frankie longs for a person or family where he will get all the hugs and pets he wants, and the training he needs to become a perfect citizen. We do not know how he is with cats. His energy might be too much for very young children, but teenagers could make great workout partners. If interested in Frankie, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if your application is on file

Meet Lola! This 7 month old puppy was surrendered to chicago animal control. She’s still very much a silly puppy. Lola is working on potty training - luckily she loves crate time and does well. It takes her a minute to warm up to men compared to women. Lola is fostered with other dogs and lived previously with 2 dogs. She really enjoys playing and would love a canine sibling! She is food motivated and enjoys training.

If interested in Lola, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if your application is on file

Our Story

GSR (based in Chicago with a focus on Chicago and the immediate surrounding suburbs) is always willing to provide medical care due to donations from special people who sponsor special needs dogs and donate to assist our general rescue efforts of our favorite breed. German Shepherd Rescue rescues dogs from high kill shelters mainly in Illinois. We do help dogs in NW Indiana, Southern WI and even MI when we have transportation to aid in their rescue and transport to us. Meet & Greet Events: A Meet & Greet event is where you can meet GSR and find out more about dogs that are available for foster/adoption. We set up private meetings at this time to meet our dogs in foster care. GSR will be at Petsmart in Northbrook, IL on the 1st Saturday of the month. The 3rd or 4th Sunday of each month is scheduled at Petsmart in Schaumburg, IL.
