Meet Betty! This 6 month old puppy came to us from CACC when her owners could no longer care for her. She’s been in foster a couple weeks and ready for forever home! Betty came to us a bit shy, but she’s coming out of her shell each day! She is housebroken and crate trained. Betty is dog friendly and learning the ropes from her foster sister. She is a typical energetic puppy that would benefit from continued obedience training. Betty loves toys! She has not been cat tested or around small children while in our care. If interested in adopting this black beauty, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if you have an application on file

Westley, Buttercup, Apollo, Sable, Tessa, and Barney have all been adopted! Special thanks to their foster families Heather, Sean and Lara, Aurelio and Annabel, Jaci and Tom, and Kathleen and David for fostering these wonderful dogs until they found their forever homes. They truly are the reason why we are able to do the work we do. Congratulations all!

Our sweet Sara, named after her transporter, is ready to find her forever home. This sweet puppy is about 5 - 6 months old and had a very rough start to life. She was confiscated as a cruelty case due to filthy living conditions and no access to food or water. Sara was emaciated with a skin infection and had whipworms - she weighed just 18 lbs.

With 3 meals per day and medical care, she is now thriving! Her foster mom says she’s pretty calm for a puppy. She loves her foster brother and is good with children. Sara is still figuring out the difference between dog and baby toys 😉. She is doing well with housebreaking and in her crate. Sara is affectionate and solicits pets all the time from her people. She loves to cuddle! Like any puppy, she’d benefit from obedience training. If interested in adopting Sara, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if you have an application on file!

Meet Hogan! This handsome young boy was picked up as a stray but sadly he was never reclaimed. He is about a year old and weighs about 60 pounds. Hogan is housebroken and crate trained. He would benefit from obedience training like any young GSD and would love a fenced back yard! He was exuberant meeting another dog at the shelter, so he’d need some work on socializing and meeting other dogs. Hogan has not been cat tested. He has done well at the vet and groomers office! Hogan has been friendly with new people and has done well meeting kids 15+. If interested in adopting Hogan, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if you have an application on file

It is with very heavy hearts that we share our sweet senior boy Regis unexpectedly crossed the rainbow bridge. He was thriving in his foster home, with his wonderful personality shining through each day. Early Saturday morning he began to vomit, and we suspected he had a seizure. He continued to decline and his foster brought him into the ER. The vet suspected he had pneumonia, which could’ve been caused by aspirating when he vomited. Regis was stable and began antibiotics, and his foster parents decided to bring him home. Regis passed peacefully overnight at home, which we think is the way he wanted it to be. We cannot think Kaylee and Tyler for giving him the most wonderful months of his life. While he was never officially adopted, we know Regis was home ♥️

Minnie aka Missy is a far cry from the emaciated girl we rescued back in May! She came to us from CACC after being found as a stray. Missy is a young girl about 2-3 years old and has a zest for life! She weighed just 30 lbs and is now at 48 lbs! Missy does have EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency), a digestive disorder as a result of the pancreas not producing enough enzymes. She will require enzymes daily with her food for the rest of her life. The good news is she’s stable and this is a fairly common condition seen with GSDs.

Missy has so many wonderful qualities! She is currently fostered with a male GSD, two small dogs, and cats! Yes you read that right — we have a cat friendly GSD! Minnie is housebroken and loves her crate! She is an energetic girl and would love a backyard she can play in. Minnie can be a tad shy when you first meet her but she warms up very nicely. She loves toys and is a bit of a toy hog 😂. Missy hasn’t been around children, but we think she’d do well. Her foster mom says she’d be a great agility dog — she loves to jump and is a bouncy girl! Missy will make a wonderful addition to a lucky family! If interested in adopting, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if you have an application on file

How special that two of our dogs in the same
Foster home that waited since February for their forever homes were adopted the same weekend?! Eileen our wonderful foster took Shadow in from CACC after being surrendered due to no fault of her own. Shortly after, we received an urgent plea to take in Skylite, an emaciated GSD found in an alley. She was loaded with parasites and only 47 lbs. Shadow ended up being a great big sister to Skylite and helping her gain confidence.

One of our volunteers daughters lost her beloved GSD at 14, and really wanted to adopt from GSR! It was an instant match and while Shadow was a great big sister, we think she’s happy she can be the queen in her new home. Her mom reports that she loves to give hugs and that they love her so much already 🥰

Skylite caught the eye of the Passafiume family (she’s such a gorgeous girl!). Of course the meet and greet sealed the deal and Skylite is settling in well with her new family. She has a canine brother and loves the children in her hole too!

We cannot thank Eileen enough for fostering both of these wonderful girls until their perfect matches came along. Congratulations to both families!!!

Marlin the branch manager checking in! I’ve been in my foster home just over 2 months and I love these people, but I’m ready for my forever home! I’m a happy guy, I seem to like children when I see them. I haven’t met any cats, so that’s a question mark for me. I lived previously with a female GSD and currently am fostered with one. I might be more of a ladies man when it comes to my canine friends, but I’d require a meet and greet with any resident dog. Honestly though, I love my people and am good at self entertaining, so I’d be just fine as a spoiled only dog! Heck, after what I’ve been through, I deserve it! Can you believe I used to weigh 32 lbs?! Man I’m so happy I don’t have to worry about where my next meal is from. Based on my teeth, the vets say I’m around 5, but I seem to have puppy energy! I really love my walks and my toys, so if you can give me those things, I’ll be your new best friend! Alright — time to go play! Xoxoxo Marlin

****ADOPTED****

This 17 week old puppy came to us from central Illinois after being found as a stray and has been in foster with us for a little over a week. Apollo is currently being fostered with two GSR alums that are showing him the ropes. He's people friendly and dog friendly, and has even met kids 8+! He's well on his way to being housebroken and learns quickly (has already gotten the hang of sit and down). He's crate trained and seems to like his crate, though he does have a little bit of FOMO and will whine and bark for a few minutes after being locked in. Apollo does have some prey drive and is still working on his leash manners (especially when bunnies are around). This pup has a big fan club among his foster's friends and has already spent time in social settings and done great! He also has the best side eye we’ve seen in quite awhile! If interested in meeting Apollo, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or [email protected] if you have an application on file

Our little Jack Jack is home! We’re so grateful to the amazing staff at Naperville Animal Hospital for taking such wonderful care of him. He immediately received antibody treatment, a newly FDA approved treatment for dogs with parvovirus. This, along with his foster mom’s quick action resulted in only 3 nights in the hospital and will help with a faster recovery. Thank you to everyone who donated to his medical bills! Treating a dog for parvo is not cheap, and your donations help tremendously. Jack Jack is happy to be home 🥰

Jack Jack our recent rescue from Joliet Animal control is currently hospitalized with parvo. He came to us with a coccidia infection and then started to become lethargic then vomiting and severe diarrhea. Luckily his foster mom was quick to realize something was off and brought him in. Poor Jack Jack was admitted yesterday morning. He is running a fever, still vomiting and not able to eat. We have had so many medical cases lately and were not expecting this little guy to break with parvo which is extremely expensive to treat, but we will do everything we can for him. Please consider a donation to Jack Jack — we will keep everyone updated on his progress.

Congratulations to our sweet Honey girl on finding her forever home! She came to us with lymes disease, whip worms and hook worms after being found as a stray. Once Honey was healthy she became available and Anthony and Donna reached out. Initially they were only looking to foster but this little girl stole their hearts! She starts training next month and has settled in wonderfully. Happy tails Honey!!!

We are so incredibly sad to learn about the tragic death of long time rescuer Sara Rhodes. She was well known in the rescue community for her selfless work. Sara kindly offered to transport two cruelty cases to us, and upon her ride home was in a fatal car accident. Our hearts are so heavy — this should not of been the way Sara left this world. Our deepest condolences to her family and friends. She was a very well loved member of the community. Thank you Sara for all of your selfless work. Rest peacefully 😭

30/07/2024

After his early dismal beginnings, Marlin is a miracle. He was rescued by sheriffs who found him in an eviction situation, caged, weighing only 30 pounds, and covered with filth. He could barely stand—but this sweet boy had a tremendous will to live. He walked a little farther every day, and now he treks for miles. He’s just an amazingly cheerful little guy—with a big “alarm bark.”

Marlin never lost his desire for human contact. He seeks it out every chance he gets. Marlin is a smaller sized German Shepherd. He should end up at about 60 pounds (he’s up to about 54 pounds now). The vet thinks he’s about 5 - 6 years old, but his energy and style of play make us think he’s much younger.

Marlin is a very sweet-tempered dog, who responds well to praise, and to verbal correction. He’s treat-motivated. We are working with him on his “mouthiness”, and it's improving. He does not resource-guard his food or water. Marlin is energetic, housebroken, and respectful with resident senior GSD. He would be happy as an only dog, or with a playful canine sister or brother. We do not know how he is with cats.

With proper introduction, Marlin has welcomed visitors to our home. He has met several neighborhood children, and seems happy to interact with them. He can be a little skittish on walks—especially when other dogs rush at him—but with training, this should resolve.

Marlin will bring you his toys, and really appreciates it if you throw them or are willing to have a little tug of war. He is happy to demonstrate his skill at shaking, tossing into the sky, or chewing-to-a-shred any plush or rope toy you care to give him.

Marlin’s crate is his safe place. He understands the words “crate time”, and goes in for rest, treats, and food. He spends overnights in his crate without accident. He is housebroken, but you need to pay attention to his cues, which can resemble "play with me" behavior.

Marlin would be ideal for someone who wants a snuggly dog. His long coat makes him extra soft, and being with his person is his biggest joy in life. Marlin would be honored to be your new best friend. If interested in adopting, apply at www.gsrescue1.org

29/07/2024

Doreen aka Daisy came to us from CACC back in April. She was found as a stray with another dog but did not have a microchip or tags. Daisy is estimated to be about 3 years old and weighs 71 lbs. When she first came to us she had perianal fistulas, ear infections, eye infections, and underweight. She is doing much better but needs a new foster or foster to adopt home as her foster mom cannot care for her any longer due to health issues.

Daisy is an active, playful girl. She loves soccer balls! She does great on car rides. Daisy is good with older children (little ones make her a bit nervous). She is strong on leash and would benefit from training. Daisy has been good with some dogs — she probably would do best with a male dog or fine as an only dog. She is crate trained and housebroken. Daisy is currently in boarding and her fistulas are nearly healed - we don’t want them to return so we’re hoping a foster can take her in ASAP! If interested apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if you have an application on file

****ADOPTED****

Tessa is a bite sized female that is estimated to be between 2-4 years old. She came to us at only 34 lbs but is filling out nicely. Tessa was confiscated during an eviction and was clearly neglected. This did not stop her from being as sweet as can be and a huge cuddle bug once she gets to know you. Tessa is a lovely little female that loves pets and wants to snuggle all day long. Due to her previous life, Tessa is very undersocialized with people, but she has never met a dog she doesn't like. She romps around the backyard with her three foster brothers like a puppy! When Tessa meets new people she has a big bark and may back away, but she is easily won over with treats and pets. Tessa does well in her crate, but is learning the ins and outs of potty training, accidents are limited to her crate, and are now a rare occurance! Tessa is new to the backyard life and prefers to be walked to go potty, but is figuring out how to be a dog and use the backyard facilities from her foster brothers. Tessa has had no formal training and can be jumpy when seeing people she likes and would love to meet a family that would take her to positive training classes to work on her obedience and confidence.

Tessa's ideal forever home has a social dog that loves to play as much as she does, no small children, and a family committed to her training and learning how good life can be as a loved member of the family. If interested in adopting Tessa, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if you have an application on file

After 5 months in rescue, Clara, has found her forever home!!!! This sweet, shy girl came to us from CACC terrified and under socialized weighing just 35 lbs. She had a severe case of Giardia and it was clear she never lived in a home. Everything terrified her and we knew it would take time for her to adjust. Our wonderful Fosters Alyssa and Andrew agreed to take her in. They worked on getting her used to a leash, housebreaking, crate training, and just how to be a dog in general. Finally she was ready to list for adoption. She had a lot of interest being a young dog, but nothing felt like the right fit for this special girl….that is until the Kadlec family reached out! They adopted lucky from us and were ready to find him a companion. We set up a meet and greet and even though with Clara’s shy nature, they fell in love. Clara, now Fiona, has been in her new home for 5 weeks and has adjusted better than we could’ve expected!!! She loves her new brother Lucky and even snuggles with her new kitty sibling. We can’t thank Alyssa and Andrew enough for making this rescue story possible. Without our amazing, dedicated foster families, we couldn’t save dogs like Fiona (Clara) who would likely never make it out of animal control alive. Thank you to the Kadlec family for adopting again from GSR!!!! Happy tails baby girl!!!!

Meet our sweet senior Regis! Regis was found as a stray - although he was neutered sadly he did not have a microchip or tags. It’s clear to us that Regis was well loved previously - he is a social, sweet boy! He is a nice size boy nearly 90 lbs. While he is a senior, he doesn’t let his age slow him down! He gets along well with his foster sister and his foster grandma’s two male shepherds. Regis loves his chuck-it balls and always has one by his side. He loves to play fetch and chase after his foster sister. Regis is curious with cats and does well when his foster rabbit is running around supervised. He is excited to meet new people and always offers his butt for a rub. Regis does well with car rides and likes to stick his head out the window. He does well with loud noises, such as at tractor shows that his foster mom and dad go to! He has met children and was gentle with them. He is housebroken and crate trained. With age comes some medical concerns. He does have a heart murmur but it does not require any medical treatment at this time. The senior boy deserves a special home that will spoil him during his golden years!

If interested in adopting Regis, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if you have an app you file

One thing we hear a lot in rescue is “you should see dogs in the south”, but let us tell you, Chicago is failing their dogs. The number of GSDs we’ve taken in lately weighing 30-35 lbs is staggering. Dogs being abandoned, left in crates and garages to starve. Not only is it incredibly difficult to find fosters for these neglected dogs, it’s expensive to save them! bloodwork, dentals, food, medications, we have spent thousands to make up for the lack of care they’ve received. We really need help with donations to stay a float and continue to help GSDs that need us the most in our own backyard. Please consider a donation to help one of our recent medical cases so we can pay down their bills and of continue to give rhem the care they need. We also encourage people to speak up if they seen signs of neglect and please, if you can’t care for your dog, don’t abandon them. There are resources available and your dog deserves better.

IN FOSTER

KJ is urgent and needs out of the shelter ASAP. She has severe allergies and a severe UTI. Here is what we know about her: Her owner states she’s 2 (born 12/24/21), but we think with her condition currently she appears older. She is described as friendly and affectionate. KJ has completed some obedience training. She enjoyed playing with the neighbors dogs. KJ is housebroken. She lived with children as young as 4 and loved them!

If you can foster KJ and are in Chicagoland, apply at www.gsrescue1.org

****ADOPTED!!!****

Daisy is sad because her brother was adopted and she thought it was her turn, but her adopter backed out. She is a 10 week old Malinois mix with the most beautiful eyes! She is catching on well to housebreaking and crate training. If interested in this beautiful sable girl, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if you have an application on file

Our Story

GSR (based in Chicago with a focus on Chicago and the immediate surrounding suburbs) is always willing to provide medical care due to donations from special people who sponsor special needs dogs and donate to assist our general rescue efforts of our favorite breed. German Shepherd Rescue rescues dogs from high kill shelters mainly in Illinois. We do help dogs in NW Indiana, Southern WI and even MI when we have transportation to aid in their rescue and transport to us. Meet & Greet Events: A Meet & Greet event is where you can meet GSR and find out more about dogs that are available for foster/adoption. We set up private meetings at this time to meet our dogs in foster care. GSR will be at Petsmart in Northbrook, IL on the 1st Saturday of the month. The 3rd or 4th Sunday of each month is scheduled at Petsmart in Schaumburg, IL.
