Meet Rambo – Your Future Best Friend!

Rambo is a young, energetic pup with a heart of gold! At just one year old, he's still very much a playful puppy. Rambo is incredibly smart and already knows some basic commands, like "sit," "paw," and "wait." He does well waiting patiently for treats, meals, and outdoor adventures, showing that he’s eager to please and loves to learn.

He’s a big fan of toys—especially balls! But be warned, he needs tough, durable toys because he’s a powerhouse when it comes to playtime and can easily destroy softer ones.

Rambo is a loving, affectionate dog who has no idea how big he is! He will thrive in a home where someone has the time and energy to match his enthusiasm for life.

Rambo is dog friendly and fostered with 2 other GSDs. He has not been around cats or small dogs.

If you’re looking for an intelligent, active companion who will keep you on your toes and shower you with love, Rambo could be the perfect fit for your family. We can’t wait to see him find the loving home he deserves!

If interested in adopting Rambo, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected]

Smart and super-snuggly. That's Frankie. He's young, energetic, and wants to please. Frankie loves toys, especially balls. He'll bring them right back!

Frankie is social with other dogs and loves meeting new people (maybe a little too much-- we're working on calmer introductions).
He is enthusiastic, but settles down while his foster dad does desk work. He's currently living with a senior dog, who tolerates him, but he would likely enjoy a younger canine playmate.
Like any other young German Shepherd, Frankie needs an experienced person to teach him good manners. He doesn't know much about leash walking, but is treat-motivated and likely to learn fast. He dislikes being crated, but is learning it's not the end of the world to spend a bit of time there. Frankie is an athletic dog. He might be a good fit for agility work. Mostly, though, Frankie longs for a person or family where he will get all the hugs and pets he wants, and the training he needs to become a perfect citizen. We do not know how he is with cats. His energy might be too much for very young children, but teenagers could make great workout partners. If interested in Frankie, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if your application is on file

Meet Lola! This 7 month old puppy was surrendered to chicago animal control. She’s still very much a silly puppy. Lola is working on potty training - luckily she loves crate time and does well. It takes her a minute to warm up to men compared to women. Lola is fostered with other dogs and lived previously with 2 dogs. She really enjoys playing and would love a canine sibling! She is food motivated and enjoys training.

If interested in Lola, apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if your application is on file

As we enter our last hours of we want to highlight our current and toughest medical case Everett. This little guy came to us in August at just 32 lbs, completely emaciated, covered in burrs, and with a broken spirit. Everett has suffered from severe GI issues since being rescued, and is currently under the care of intend medicine at University of Madison.

To date, Everett has had an endoscopy, barium study, swallow study, CT scan, blood tests, X-rays, and several special tests. We are working diligently to find answers for Everett, while proving him the best care. To date, Everett’s medical bills have been over $8,000 which doesn’t include special food and medications.

When you’re a small rescue you have to make decisions when you’ve exhausted all your resources, but we just can’t do that to Everett. Despite all the setbacks, he remains a happy puppy that keeps showing he wants to live.

Your support will help us with the ongoing care of Everett.

Marlin and Dory were cruelty cases that came to us in June. They were completely emaciated, covered in f***s, with no food or water. It was obvious they spent a majority of their lives in crates. After becoming healthy enough, they were spayed/neutered, received dental cleanings, and were both adopted to wonderful homes. allows us to say yes to medical cases like Marlin and Dory.

Our next major medical case this year was Audrey.

Audrey was caught and brought to CACC. Sia the rescue coordinator messaged us her photos and we knew we had to help. Once we secured a foster, we arranged transport and named her Audrey. Our volunteer Bethany picked her up and brought her to our friends at Naperville Animal Hospital. Audrey was dehydrated and got some fluids to help her perk up. We ran some bloodwork and did a skin scrape. Her ears are both badly infected so staff cleaned them out as much as possible and were treated with meds. She is being treated for mange and on meds to help with the itching that comes with it. Audrey’s bloodwork had elevated white blood cell count and protein levels, She was underweight, had mammory tumors, and was in need of a dental cleaning as she has significant tartar and gum recession.

Her ears are were so severely infected it took months for head tilt to improve. After many vet appointments and a lot of TLC, Audrey was recently adopted!!!!

We started 2024 with Venus, our first medical case week 1.

This sweet girl, named Venus by her finders, came into Chicago Animal Control after being found as a stray. She was found completely emaciated covered in fleas and recently had a litter. Our friends at CACC called us as she was vomiting and blood in her urine. Our volunteer Bethany rushed her to Naperville Animal Hospital where she began receiving treatment. X-rays were sent out to a radiologist for review along with bloodwork. Venus’s white blood cell count is more than double normal, and there is concern she has fluid in her abdomen. She needs emergency surgery to remove foreign materials she ate while on the streets.

Venus ended up making it through surgery. Her stomach was full of garbage and tampons — she was so starving this is what she had to resort to.

We are happy to share Venus was adopted and is THRIVING! Your donations make a difference for dogs like her.

Our Story

GSR (based in Chicago with a focus on Chicago and the immediate surrounding suburbs) is always willing to provide medical care due to donations from special people who sponsor special needs dogs and donate to assist our general rescue efforts of our favorite breed. German Shepherd Rescue rescues dogs from high kill shelters mainly in Illinois. We do help dogs in NW Indiana, Southern WI and even MI when we have transportation to aid in their rescue and transport to us. Meet & Greet Events: A Meet & Greet event is where you can meet GSR and find out more about dogs that are available for foster/adoption. We set up private meetings at this time to meet our dogs in foster care. GSR will be at Petsmart in Northbrook, IL on the 1st Saturday of the month. The 3rd or 4th Sunday of each month is scheduled at Petsmart in Schaumburg, IL.
