Rainbow Spike Moss (Peacock Fern), Selaginella uncinata, Three 5” cuttings

Rainbow Spike Moss , Selaginella uncinata , Three 5" cuttings. Coloration: The peacock blue-green hue of this plant is actually more of an effect than a pigment: it’s produced when wavelengths of light are slowed down as they pass through the leaves, making the plant appear to glow in a very deep, dark way- absolutely mesmerizing! In addition to the otherworldly color, this particular variety of uncinata is capable of growing long, sinuous branches that gracefully curve about the vivarium or terrarium evoking such a sense of wonder. The leaves of Selaginella uncinata have epidermal cells that are lens shaped, and this increases refraction. These lens shaped epidermal cells also have large chloroplasts set near the cell walls that increase light-absorption. These lens shaped epidermal cells suggests the iridescence is an adaptation (to extreme shade) since it contributes to the plant's ability to absorb light. The green leaves that develop in response to more direct sunlight do not become blue when subjected to shade Preferred Habitat: These exotic stunners are surprisingly easy to grow as long as they are kept humid and moist- they don't like to dry out. Many people grow this plant in a semi-aquatic environment, so water propagation may be a great option. Selaginella uncinata thrive in warmer environments as they are not tolerant to frost. Where to Plant: Rainbow Spike moss does best when its placed in a spot with partial to full shade. It's important that direct sunlight be avoided, as this can cause irreparable damage to the leaf structures. The soil which the moss is planted in should be kept moist but, ensure that it is able to drain well. This versatile species makes a great fit in many different environments because of its bright coloration, able to make the landscape colors really pop in gardens, terrariums, and vivarium's alike. Growing Habits: Selaginella uncinata typically grows as a low-lying, creeping plant that acts as ground covering in various environments or as a decorative addition to terrariums & vivarium's. Rainbow Spike Moss Frequently Asked Questions How large can Rainbow Spike Moss grow to be? Rainbow Spike is well known for its low-growing expansion rather than its height, but it can grow to up to 1-2 inches tall and several feet across given time under the right growth conditions. Why is Rainbow Spike Moss so highly sought after? Other than its strikingly colorful appearance, Selaginella uncinata is often appreciated for its consistently dense, carpet-like covering over environments. Rainbow Spike is praised for its shimmering, iridescent foliage rather than its vertical growth. What benefits does Rainbow Spike Moss bring to its local ecosystem? While Rainbow Spike Moss is mostly used for its aesthetic appeal, it also brings with it a great deal of other environmental benefits. It can: -Provide a suitable habitat for smaller creatures that are present in the habitat; -Help to suppress w**d growth by covering the soil top; -Aids in maintaining humidity levels in the environment; -Promote soil health by protecting the soil surface, reduction compaction, and contributing to the organic matter as its leaves decay.
