This mare deserves some kind of medal of honor. At 27 years old she’s taken on her 4th orphan foal to raise like her own. Without a shred of doubt she immediately nickered to him upon hearing his screams and allowed him to start nursing without the slightest opposition. She does not have milk as we have just pulled her out of her much deserved retirement so she has begun to hormone treatment to produce milk again and we are supplementing him with milk replacer from a pan. Little milk face boy is doing just about as well as he could be considering the devastating week he’s had. He has really bonded with his nanny mom and was super happy to get outside after a week in a stall at the hospital.
Tjara herself has a long story which some of you know! She was a irreplaceable part of my lesson program for many many years, raised five foals of her own including Talía my best younger lesson horse and Tindur my up and coming competition horse who won the Green Horse National Ranking awards in 2024. After raising her own offspring she went on to graciously raise three more orphan foals like they were her own. In recent years Tjara went to live at our neighbors to enjoy pasture and trail rides with a young light rider. Despite her age, Tjara has once again stepped right in to take Maeja’s foal once proving she’s worth her weight in gold!! 💛🌟🐝
